Lesson Plan
Unit 12 – Identifying, Marking, Cutting, and Bending Metal
Performance Objective
After the learner completes Unit 12 and participates in the suggested activities, the learner should
be able to identify, mark, cut, and bend cold metal.

Competencies
Identify metals.
Mark metal.
Cut and file metal.
Bend square, round, and flat steel.
Form sheet metal.

Terms to Know
The following terms are used in this unit and defined in the text glossary. Spanish translations of
the terms also appear in the glossary.
Ferrous — metal that comes from iron ore.
Nonferrous — metal that does not come from iron ore.
Alloy — mixture of two or more elemental metals.
Malleable — workable.
Casting — a mold that holds molten metal.
Ductile — able to be bent slightly without breaking.
Malleable cast iron — combination of a cast iron core and a ductile metal outer layer.
Anneal — to cool steel slowly so as to make it soft and malleable.
Tempering — heating a piece of tool steel followed by controlled cooling so as to control
the degree of hardness.
Galvanized steel — steel coated with zinc for rust resistance.
Corrosion — reaction of metal to liquids and gases that causes them to deteriorate or
break down.
Solder — mixture of tin and lead.

Scratch awl — a sharply pointed tool with a wooden or plastic handle used to mark
metal.
Scriber — a very small, metal, sharp-tipped marker.
Soapstone — a soft, gray rock that shows up well when marked on most metals.
Dividers — two sharp steel legs connected on one end that are used to make arcs and
circles.
Center punch — steel punch with a sharp point.
Hacksaw — a device that holds a blade designed for cutting metal.
Single-cut file — a file with teeth going only in one direction.
Double-cut file — file that has teeth laid out in two directions.
Draw filing — a filing procedure done by placing the file at a 90 degree angle to the
metal.
Stock — a piece of material such as wood or metal.
Snips (shears) — a large scissorlike tool for cutting sheet metal and fabrics.
Shears — See snips.

Cold chisel — a piece of tool steel shaped, tempered, and sharpened to cut mild steel
when driven with a hammer.
Eye — a piece of metal bent into a small circle.
Anvil — heavy steel object used to help bend, cut, and shape metal.

Instructor Notes:
Call on various students to orally define the Terms to Know. List those with which the
students have difficulty and spend extra time discussing the meanings.
Prepare a display of various types of metals and have students identify them. (Identifying
Metals)
Review metal shop safety.
Demonstrate marking, cutting, and bending metal. (Marking Metal; Cutting Metal;
Bending Metal)
Allow time to review Unit 12 and complete the self-evaluation.

Class Activities and Projects

1. Using the CourseMate resources, have students match the shapes with their names in
Worksheet 12-01 and define and give examples of the metal types in Worksheet 12-02.
2. Suggest an FFA SAE (supervised agricultural experiences) project idea:
Manage the steel inventory in the agriculture shop. (FFA SAE Ideas, Power and
Structural Systems 20)

Suggested Assessment/Homework Activities

You may choose to assign any or all of these items or provide some as additional review options
or for extra credit. Depending on the length of your course, you may break the unit reading into
segments or assign different items for homework each night. Note that the lab manual exercises
are designed to be conducted in a group lab setting and require additional materials and
preparation, and may be spread across units.
