02. MAIN SOURCE of ELECTRICAL POWER

a. Every WSB unit shall provide with a main source of Electrical Power at least Two Generating Sets (Normally
Diesel Generator Set) (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. The expected lifetime of the generating unit shall be at least 20 years (GS ELE 031-4.1)
c. The capacity of these generating sets is to be such that in the event of any generating set being stopped it will be
possible to supply those service necessary to provide normal operational conditions of propulsion of safety (Bureau
Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
d. Generator shall have degree of protection IP22 and rating plate marked with the appropriate generator specifications
(IEC 92-201) and (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
e. Protection against: Overload, Short Circuit & Under Voltage shall be provided (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)

f. (if the Genset can be synchronized) Each Genset shall be equipped with Voltage and Speed Regulations, Reverse
Power Protection, Instrumentation to monitor circulating current – voltage and load sharing for Parallel Operations
(IEC 92-302)
g. The Generator shall be 380/400 V, 3Ph, 50 Hz with its neutral ungrounded and not distributed (GS ELE 001)
h. Insulation and protection on generator wiring connections if generator not equipped with terminal blocks
i. If the Genset can not be synchronized, change over switch with mechanical interlocks shall be installed
j. Each generator set should have independent battery for starting(Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
k. The number and name plate of generating unit shall be installed (GS ELE 113)
03. EMERGENCY SOURCE of ELECTRICAL POWER
a. WSB unit should be provided with a self-contained emergency source of electrical power (MODU 1990) and
(Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. Genset = 1 x 100% Emergency Load for AC supply (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
c. Uninterruptible Power Supply for AC supply (MODU 1990)
d. Battery Bank with charger for DC supply (MODU 1990)
e. The source of the power may be either a generator set for AC supply or an UPS and/or Battery Bank with Charger
for DC supply (MODU 1990)
f. If the emergency power source is from a generator, the primover (Diesel) shall have an independent supply of fuel,
it shall be started automatically upon failure of the supply from the main source of power and shall be automatically
connected to the emergency switchboard within maximum 45 seconds (MODU 1990)
g. If the emergency power source is from a Battery Bank, it shall be capable to carry the emergency load without
recharging while maintaining the voltage of the battery through out the discharge period within 12% above or below
its nominal voltage and automatically connecting to the emergency switchboard in the event of failure of the main
power source (MODU 1990)
h. Under normal operating conditions, the emergency generator shall be stand-by mode (ready to start upon loss of
voltage at emergency bus bar) (GS ELE 021 – 10.4.2)
04. MAIN SWITCHBOARD
a. Busbars arrangement should be used and to be made of Copper, Three Phase Three Wires or Single Phase Two
Wires (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. The protection index of switchboards shall be (minimum) IP22 (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
c. It does not give rise to flammable gas or vapour accumulation. And no pipe carrying liquids above, behind or near
the Switchboards (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
d. To be placed to give easy access (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
e. As near as possible to its Genset
It shall be at the same main fire zone or in the same machinery compartment with its generating sets (Bureau
Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
f. Generator feeder and busbars, air gap maintained for all non insulated terminals and busbars(Bureau Veritas 2003
Chapters 2-3)
g. Non-conducting mats at front and rear (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
h. Emergency lamp in front of the panel
i. Temperature rise of the busbar and their connection should not exceed 45 0C when running continuously at normal
rating (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)

j. Cubicles, compartments, withdraw able starter, circuit breaker, and component shall be identified by labels with
circuit number (at front and rear of panel). Name plate shall be laminated engraved plastic with black letters on a
white background. Stuck labels are prohibited. (GS ELE 135 – 5.4.1)
k. Interlock, covers, or insulating screen,… shall be provided to prevent incorrect or unsafe operation and to prevent
access to live parts (GS ELE 131-5.5.2)
l. A main distribution switchboard for hull & accommodation shall be installed in a dedicated switch room located
within hull. (GS ELE 021- 9.1)
m. Space for future extension of at least one panel shall be allowed at each end of switchboard (GS ELE 021-13.5)
05. EMERGENCY SWITCHBOARD (Essential Switchboard)
a. To be placed as near as possible to emergency source (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. To be connected to main switchboard by an interconnector feeder (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
c. The interconnector shall be disconnected automatically/instantaneously in case the absence power occurs on the
main switchboard (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)

06. MAIN TRANSFORMER


a. It shall be dry type, Dyn. (GS ELE 141)
b. It shall be separate windings between primary and secondary, where the star point of secondary is strongly
grounded. (GS ELE 141)
c. The protection index of transformer shall be (minimum) IP22 (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
d. Each transformer shall be identified with a stainless steel name plate. (GS ELE 141-6.17)
07. INSTALLATION of 380V POWER NETWORK
a. Neutral not Distributed (GS ELE 001)
b. Earthing System: Ungrounded (IT) (GS ELE 001)
c. Insulation Monitoring shall be installed to Give alarm on the 1st fault and alarm or indication lamp shall be send to
control room (GS ELE 001)
d. In addition to over load & short circuit protections, each out going to a hazardous area shall be protected by earth
leakage current relay with fixed value or adjustable value 30/300mA ≤ 0.05 second (except for motor driving fire
pump & anchor). The setting of 300 mA is as electrical spark prevention for electrical equipments (motor,
transformer, etc). The setting of 30 mA is for Protection of all socket outlets, electrical appliances … etc (GS ELE
001)
08. INSTALLATION of 220V 3 PHASE POWER NETWORK
a. Supplied through a 3 phase step down transformer (380/220V), dry type, Dyn (GS ELE 141)
b. Neutral not distributed, but it shall be strongly grounded (GS ELE 141)
c. In addition to overload & short circuit protections each out going shall be protected by an ELCB 300 mA (except
Socket Outlet and lamp in the toilet, it shall be protected by 30 mA ELCB) (GS ELE 001)
09. INSTALLATION of 24V DC NETWORK
a. It shall be floating system if the power supplies to control equipment in hazardous area, and permanent insulation
monitoring should be installed with alarm sent to control room
b. The negative polarity of the control transformer should be grounded if the power does not supply to control
equipment in hazardous area

c. If the network source is from a battery bank, the battery power shall be able to be cut off in case of shutdown zero
condition. Breaker with trip coil should be installed
d. The neutral arrangement shall be IT system, with installation of a permanent insulation monitoring. (GS ELE 151)

10. CABLES
a. Minimum cross section of the cable conductor is 2.5 mm2 (G.S. ELE 161)
b. Cable exposed to the risk of mechanical damage or supplying an out door equipment shall be an armored cable.
Marine cable only should be used for all purposes on the barge, internal and external areas (Bureau Veritas 2003
Chapters 2-3)
c. Cable gland used in classified area (zone 1 & 2) shall be an Ex type with double compression or an Ex type which is
suitable for marine cables (G.S. ELE 079)
d. Cable used for safety system(fire & gas protection), emergency shutdown, process safety device, fire pump, public
address and general alarm system, essential telecommunications equipment, navigation aids field cabling, battery
backed power supply feeders to all systems associated with the above shall have fire resistant characteristic (IEC
60331)(GS ELE 021-13.14.1)
e. All cable shall be flame retardant type to IEC 60332-3, category A (GS ELE 001- 9.7.1)
f. All metal coverings of the cable should be electrically connected to the metal hull of the ship at both ends (Bureau
Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
g. All cables shall contain a grounding conductor (Yellow or Green) (G.S. ELE 161)
- It means 3 phase circuit shall use 4 cores cable
- 2 phase or 1 phase circuit shall use 3 cores cable
h. Cables of different types shall be laid in dedicate cable tray ( GS ELE 364)
i. Mixing of two different voltage in the same cable is forbidden (GS ELE 001-9.7.1)
j. Cable entries which are not used shall be fitted with blind plug approved for use with the equipment (GS ELE 011-
6.7.1)
k. Barrier plates shall be provided on the terminal block to maintain segregation of different voltage (power, control
and instrumentation terminal) (GS ELE 011-6.7.1)
l. Enclosures of apparatus with a degree of protection of IPX2 shall not have cable entries on the top, unless the cable
entry plate or cable attachment is made so as to exclude water entry. (IEC 60092-101, 2.15)
11. MOTOR
a. The minimum motor protection is type 2 coordination shall be used. Each motor protection shall consist of:
- Switch Disconnector Fuse c/w aM fuse
- Contactor
- Thermal Overload Relay
b. The protection index of motor shall be (minimum) IP22 in engine room and IP 55 in out door and IP 56 in open
decks (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
c. Motor used in classified area (zone 1 & 2) shall be protected by ELCB 300mA (GS ELE 001)
d. Motors and accessories shall bear their own marking, according to the mode of protection used (GS ELE 111)
e. Painting system shall be suitable for the side environmental condition, for protection against external corrosion. (GS
ELE 111-6)

12. TRANSFORMER of MOTOR CONTROL
a. It shall be dry type
b. It shall be separate windings between primary & secondary. At its secondary, one of polarity should be connected to
ground.
c. aM fuse type protection at primary side and gG fuse type protection at secondary side shall be provided
d. The transformer feeder shall be supplied from the 380V/400V network
e. Secondary negative pole should be grounded
13. LIGHTING FITTINGS
a. Lamp holder for incandescent lamps, up to and including 200 watts, shall be Bayonet type (B-22) or Screw type (E-
27) (Bureau Veritas Section 18-095).
b. Lamp holder above 200 watts shall be Screw type (E-40) (Bureau Veritas Section 18-095).
c. Lamp holder supports of live part shall be made of non-ignitable material preferably of ceramic material (Bureau
Veritas Section 18-095).
d. A low pressure sodium lamp is forbidden to be used (GS ELE 081)
e. Luminaries in safe area shall be heavy duty type, industrial, IP 55 Minimum (GS ELE 011)
f. Outdoor luminaries protection index shall be IP55 or IP56 for exposed decks.(GS ELE 081)
g. If use fluorescent lamp with plastic box, cable ground (yellow/green) shall be connected to the metallic ballast of the
lamp
h. Lighting fixtures in hazardous area shall be an EEx “de” type (GS ELE 079)
i. No Lamp is Allowed to be install above the Engine (especially non metallic fixtures)
j. Emergency lights shall be marked for easy identification (IEC 60092-306)
k. The emergency lighting circuit shall be separated from the normal lighting (GS ELE 021-13.8.1)
l. The emergency lighting system shall be: (GS ELE 081)
- Considered as a vital electrical system
- Suitable for use in zone 1 hazardous area
- Supplied by dedicated batteries with autonomy of 90 minutes providing no delay to illuminate
upon loss of normal or essential lighting.

m. The emergency lighting luminaries shall be: (GS ELE 081)


- In accordance with the IEC 60598-2-22
- With fluorescent lamps
- With integrated Ni-Cd Battery
- ATEX certified category 2
14. BATTERIES & BATTERY CHARGER
a. The starting batteries and their connection cable shall be correctly dimensioned.
They shall be covered by a strong insulating material, proper storage compartment with ventilation to outside
atmosphere (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. The cell construction shall consider any discharge of electrolyte due to an inclination of 40 degree from the vertical.
Suggest only maintenance free batteries should be used (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
c. Installation in cubicles or outdoor battery box might also be required in project particular specification. (GS ELE
001-9.3.2.2)

d. Batteries and charger may be located in the same cubicle only if this cubicle is provided with dilution ventilation
(GS ELE 001-9.3.2.)
e. Battery room/location should be adequately ventilated (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
f. No storage battery is to be placed in accommodation space (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
g. Lead batteries and alkaline batteries are not to be used in the same space (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
h. All battery shall be secured to prevent movement and to be arranged to permit ready access for maintenance
operations (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
i. A DANGER notice shall be permanently secured to doors or covers of battery compartments, lockers and boxes,
indicating that a naked light or smoking in these rooms or in their vicinity is prohibited (IEC 92-401)
j. Electrical equipment for use in battery room is to have minimum explosion group IIC and temperature class T3 (GS
ELE 001-9.3.2.3)
k. The battery charger shall be equipped with fully controlled charging with SCR (Silicon Control Rectifier) in floating
charge mode with minimum IP22
15. GROUNDINGS
a. All electric equipment using conductive frame shall be connected to the barge frame by an earthing conductor.
Suggest copper wire with proper crimped or soldered terminals and stainless or non ferrous studs for connection to
eliminate poor bounding due to corrosion with ferrous studs (Bureau Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3)
b. Each wiring circuit shall be identified by green/ yellow strips. (GS ELE 135 – 4.7)
c. Metal ducting (cable tray, conduit, etc.) shall be connected to the equipotential bonding system at both ends and
every 25 m. full continuity shall be ensured. In case of short length elements (less than 3 m) one end only may be
connected to the equipotential bonding system. (GS ELE 031 – 4.5)
d. Use of metal ducting as earthing conductor is strictly prohibited. (GS ELE 031 – 4.5)
e. Any electrical equipment that is not class II rated or is connected to a system operating at a voltage other than the
safety extra low voltage shall be connected to the equipotential bonding system by its own earthing conductor. (GS
ELE 031 – 4.5)
f. Protection concerns earthing of pipes, flares, tanks, columns and exchangers liable to generate static electricity. This
equipment shall be provided with welded lugs, connected to the nearest earth bar. (GS ELE 031 – 9)
g. The equipotential bonding system by a copper conductor with a minimum cross-sectional area of 35mm2. (GS ELE
031 –11)
16. ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT in HAZARDOUS AREA
a. All devices or equipment installed in zone 1 or zone 2 shall be classified as Ex type (GS ELE 079)
b. All glass cover of high intensity discharge lamp shall be protected by a metallic guard (GS ELE 081)
c. They shall be protected against earth leakage relay 300mA (GS ELE 001)
d. Consideration for also locating an emergency light at control panel for well control units
e. Electrical equipment is to be installed in paint store room shall be classified as Ex…IIB T3 (minimum) Bureau
Veritas 2003 Chapters 2-3
f. The marking shall be legible, visible and durable taking into account possible chemical corrosion (GS ELE 079)
g. All electrical apparatus installed in a potentially explosion gas atmosphere (zone 0, 1, 2) shall be certified by a
Notified Body. (GS ELE 079)
h. LV socket outlet prohibited to install in zone 1 of hazardous area (GS ELE 079)

17. ESD SYSTEM
a. In addition to fire and gas detection system, the ESD Push Button to stop all generator primover shall be possible to
operate from at least two strategic locations, one of which should be outside hazardous area
b. In case of ESD 1, once one of the ESD “1” PB operates, all genset primover should be stop and inhibit the starting
of emergency generator
c. In case of ESD 0, once one of the ESD “0” PB operates, ESD 1 condition and all battery supply cut off shall happen

18. OTHERS
a. No switch and socket are allowed to be installed in the toilet and bathroom
b. All lamps installed in bathroom should be protected by an ELCB 30mA and not closed with shower or can touch by
hand
c. All switch and socket installed in engine & workshop rooms shall be an industrial type
d. All switch and socket installed in the out door shall be IP 55 and open deck IP56
e. All emergency lamps/lighting with self contained battery installed shall be suitable for zone1
f. Terminal boxes of machines in all rooms must have IP44 degree of protection as a minimum requirement.
g. No electrical equipment installation under raised floor is allowed, except junction box (GS ELE 364 – 3.4)
h. Safety kit shall be provided in each battery room (Glasses, gloves, eye-wash…) (GS ELE 021-13.13.5)
