Introduction
One of the most often performed tests in environmental
engineering labs is the measurement of pH. Since the pH
level affects every part of water treatment, it is one of
the most crucial tests for both water and wastewater.
The significance of pH for the environment is that very
low or high pH levels can lead to corrosion of plumbing
materials and water and wastewater networks. A pH
range that encourages microbial activity is necessary for
biological wastewater treatment. Hydrogen sulfide,
which has a bad odor, can also be produced at low pH
levels.

objective
The purpose of this experiment was to calibrate a pH
meter and demonstrate how to utilize it to calculate the
potentiometric pH of provided water samples.

Procedure

- Between each measurement, the pH electrode was

washed with DI water.
- The electrode was dipped into each sample or
standard, and the reading was recorded when stable.
-After calibrating the instrument with standards for pH
4, 7, and 10, the pH of the provided water samples was
determined.

Result
The pH values of the samples were:
1) Sample A (drinking water) – 7.35
2) Sample B (tap water) – 7.01

Conclusion
The pH of two supplied samples was determined
using the potentiometric method. They were
discovered to be within the neutral range, making
them suitable for household use.
