Year Level: 6 Students have previously learnt about the Last
Supper and the Eucharist in 5.

 Explain the nature and importance of the sacrament of the Eucharist through class discussions.

 Describe what happened at the Last Supper through drawing images, retelling to a partner, and
creating a book summarising the Last Supper.

 Define transubstantiation through discussions.

Introduce the Eucharist and the Last Supper…
The sacrament of the Eucharist is inspired by the Last Supper.
This was Jesus’ last meal before his crucifixion. It is a key event in
the Bible.

10mins Students form a circle on the mat


Read Matthew 26:17-30 about the Last Supper.

Once read ask students to sit and reflect the gospel reading.
What do you think Jesus was feeling at this time?
Why do you think this?

Introduce transubstantiation
Ask students if they know the meaning of this word

Transubstantiation: The eucharistic elements (bread and wine)


become the body and blood of Jesus Christ during consecration,
while keeping the appearances of bread and wine.

Discuss with students:


What is the sacrament of the Eucharist based on?
The Last Supper - can students remember any quotes?

What happens during the Eucharistic ceremony?


We eat the bread and drink the wine (Jesus' body and blood).

What is First Holy Communion?
Ceremony in the Catholic Church where students in year 4 take
part in receiving the Eucharist for the first time.

Why is the Eucharist important to Christians?


It remembers Jesus and his sacrifice. It is also a sacrament
through which receive God's grace.

What do Catholics believe about the Eucharist?


They believe in transubstantiation. The bread and wine become
Jesus' body and blood during the consecration.

Students complete a small task summarising the events of the


Last Supper.
10mins Students are to fold an A4 piece of paper into 6 parts and number
them 1 to 6.
Their task is to draw an image reflecting the six parts of the Last
Supper. (Displayed on the board)

Students then share their summary with a partner (2 minutes


each)
Explain the main activity
15mins Students are to use their iPads to create a book about the Last
Supper. They must include how we as Christians remember Jesus
today at mass.

Students move back to their desks and work independently

Lesson Closure (Review lesson objectives with students)

Students are to upload their book to Seesaw then complete an exit


5mins ticket writing one event from the Last Supper and the meaning of
transubstantiation.
