Subject : Effects of political demonstration to economy of Malawi

As you all aware, demonstration is one way of expressing democratic right of citizens in Malawi.
Demonstration gives citizen to voice out their concerns to government. In Malawi took place
several times and are organized by civil society, NGOs and individuals many times in order to
address their issues at hand to government. political demonstration in Malawi have bring a
negative affects to the economy of Malawi. These Political demonstration in Malawi have affect
economy of Malawi in difference ways. Below are the effects of political demonstrations to the
economy of Malawi

 Damage of infrastructure and theftly of goods. During demonstration a lot of buildings,

roads are damaged and others are destroyed by setting them on fire which will require a
lot of money for renovations as this happens the government is forced to renovate the
destructed roads and buildings, so political demonstrations are negatively affect the
country economy
 Political demonstration affects economy of Malawi through disruption of business
activities. During demonstration, most shop owners do not open their shops fear for loss
of life and goods once demonstrators break shops and stolen properties in the shop as a
results business is affected
 Loss of foreign investors, during 2011 and 2019 political demonstration in Malawi some
investors migrate to other countries where there was peace for protection of their life,
business and for smooth run of their business activities and other investor that were
willing to invest in Malawi do not come fear for loss of their loss of their
 life ,investiments (business ) because of political demonstrations due to engage that
country in investments for security purposes as a results forex becomes a problem and
these may lead to high unemployment rate
 Tourism is affected, Malawi have a lot of beautiful natural resources like lake Malawi,
Mulanje mauntain Zomba plateau and other resources. These resources attract
tourism from other neighbouring country and other country . so when country is holding
unpeace political demonstration, tourist cannot visit Malawi when this happens they
can't visit those places and generation for forex is a problem
 Government expenditure increase due to political demonstration through giving
governments security officers allowances, governments buy fuel for security cars that
security officers are using during demonstrations.
 Public health works protestors are subjected to infections disease which increase public
health cost causing a challenge to health sectors (economic challenge)

As such, we wishes demonstrations organizer, NGO, governments and well wishers to provide
civic education to citizens of Malawi about important of holding peacefully demonstration to
avoid negative effects of political demonstrations to economy of Malawi
