This document describes the practices for the control and administration on NDT personnel
training, qualifications, and certification in accordance with ASME Code Section VIII, Div.
1, Appendix 8.

Non-Destructive Methods

Liquid penetrant examination (Ref. SE 165 Type II Method C)

Training & Experience

Personnel being considered for certification shall complete sufficient organized training and
experience to become familiar with the principles and practices of the specific test method
related to their certification.

Examinations:

Physical: An examinations shall be given to all levels to assure natural or corrected near
distance acuity in at last one eye such that the applicant is capable of reading a minimum of
Jaeger Number 2 letters at a distance of not less than 12 inches (30.5 cm) on a standard
Jaeger test chart. The ability to perceive an Ortho Rater minimum of 8 or similar test
pattern shall also be acceptable. Qualified personnel on an annual basis shall administer the
examination. Examination results shall be kept on file for the period of certification.

Individuals shall be capable of distinguishing and differentiating contrast between colors


used in the method for which qualified as demonstrated by practical examinations or test
performance.

Specific (Written)

A specific written examinations shall be given covering the equipment, operating


procedures, and test principles relative to the applicable company certified written
procedures. Fifteen (15) questions are to be answered.
Practical

Personnel shall demonstrate to the certification examiner that they are competent in the
techniques of the applicable non-destructive examination method, including making the
examination and interpreting and evaluating the results.
This examination shall be performed in accordance with Company ‘s written procedure(s)
which are certified to be in accordance with ASME Code Section V, T-150).

Grading Examinations:

A grade of 80% or greater is required for qualification.

Re-examination

Those failing to attain the required grades must wait at least thirty (30) calendars days or
show evidence of having received suitable additional training as determined by the
company before re-examination.
