Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman. He was born on February 11,
1847. His mother taught him at home. Much of his education came from reading R.G. Parker's
School of Natural Philosophy. Edison developed many skills when he was young. Edison developed
hearing problems at an early age. He sold candy and newspapers on trains running from Port Huron
to Detroit and sold vegetables to supplement his income. He developed many devices that greatly
influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the
long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. Edison died of complications of diabetes on October 18,
1931, in his home.

Once upon a time, there lived a man named Maloo. He was very poor. He lived near a thick forest.
He had a large family to support. One day he went into the woods to gather firewood. At midday,
he took out his lunch and sat down to eat. Just when he was about to eat a bite, a dwarf appeared
before him and asked for something to eat. Maloo shared half of his lunch and wine with him. After
eating, the dwarf disappeared without even thanking him.
Maloo continued gathering firewood. In the evening, when he was returning home, Maloo saw a
giantess sitting on a tree. She was enormously huge and was shaking the trees around her and
consequently even the ground was shaking. She asked him what he was doing in her forest. When
he told her that he was collecting firewood, she was very angry. She wanted to eat him up. Maloo
was frightened. However, he gathered all his courage and requested her to spare his life. He said, I
have seven children and a wife. She refused his request. Finally the dwarf came and helped Maloo

to get out of the forest.

Although most of us feel like we couldn't live without our mobile phones, they've not really been in
existence for very long. In fact, mobile phones as we know them today have only been around in the
last 20 years. However, the history of mobile phones goes back to 1908 when a US Patent was issued
in Kentucky for a wireless telephone.

Mobile phones were invented as early as the 1940s when engineers working at AT&T
developed cells for mobile phone base stations. The very first mobile phones were not really mobile
phones at all. They were two-way radios that allowed people like taxi drivers and the emergency
services to communicate. Instead of relying on base stations with separate cells (and the signal being
passed from one cell to another), the first mobile phone networks involved one very powerful base
station covering a much wider area. Motorola, on 3 April 1973, was the first company to mass
produce the first handheld mobile phone. It was invented by Martin Cooper. These early mobile
phones are often referred to as 0G mobile phones, or Zero Generation mobile phones. Most phones
today rely on 3G or 4G mobile technology.

4. Read the following text and answer the questions.

Living things adapt to their environment so they can survive. An organism adapts when it
develops a behaviour that makes it more likely to survive. It can also adapt by forming a
physical characteristic or body part that helps it survive. In a forest biome, some trees grow
taller than the other plants around them. This lets them reach the sunlight. Growing taller is an
adaptation that helps trees survive. Shorter plants have adapted with their behaviour. They have
learned to live in the shade with less sunlight.
Animals in the forest have a wide variety of adaptations. Monkeys have long tails. They can
use them almost like another hand. This helps them swing quickly through the tops of trees.
They can even do this while holding their babies or gathering food. Giraffes need to reach
leaves at the tops of tall trees. Having a long neck is an adaptation that allows them to do this.
Some animals’ adaptations prevent other animals from wanting to eat them. A skunk's horrible
smell makes larger anımals choose something else to eat. Even plants sometimes protect
themselves in this way. Roses and acacia trees both have dangerous thorns. The thorns prevent
animals from eating their leaves.

1) What are the two ways that an organism adapts?

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..
2) Why do giraffes have long neck?

3) What adaptation does a Skunk have?
