Essay Writing

Introduction:

 Two sentences max. Introduces argument only. No language analysis.

Structure: Always aim for three arguments. Try and teach the third to be a however/alternate
paragraph:

E.G. In ‘Rooms’, how does Browning explore his speaker’s feelings?

 Browning explores his speaker’s desperation to find a lost loved one…


 Browning explores the loneliness of his speaker…
 However, Browning could also be suggesting that a sense of madness from his speaker…

In every paragraph:

 Quick-Fire Analysis Formula: all students should be able to do this. KS3 can focus on
selecting the correct techniques, embedding quotations and matching technique to
effect/meaning.
o The [technique], “…” implies/suggests… (x at least 5 times in each paragraph (but
really this is as many times as necessary to cover all relevant quotations).

 Deeper Analysis: students should be beginning to develop the skill of selecting quotations
that just need “quick-fire” analysis and those that are worthy of in-depth analysis, where the
above needs to be furthered with ‘perhaps this could show/mean…” and linking to other
evidence/momentary reference to context (always half a sentence).
