Introduction to Bus Topology
❏ Bus topology is a multipoint connection where one
long cable (backbone) links all the devices in a
network.
❏ Nodes are connected to bus cable by drop lines &
taps.
❏ Drop line is a connection running between the
device & the main cable.
❏ A tap is a connector that either splies into the main Fig 1: Bus Topology

cable or punctures the sheathing of a cable to

create a contact with metallic core.
❏ There is a limit on the number of taps a bus can
support and on the distance between those taps
Introduction to Star Topology
❏ In star topology each device has a dedicated
point to point link only to a central
controller,called as hub.
❏ The devices are not directly connected to one
another.
❏ Star topology doesn’t allow direct traffic
between devices, the controller acts as an
exchange. Fig2: Star Topology
❏ Each device needs only one link & one I/O
port to connect it to any number of others.
Differences between Bus & Star Topology
1. In BUS topology All devices are 1. In STAR topology Each device is
connected to a central hub. connected to a single cable(backbone)
2. Less expensive than Star 2. High implementation cost
3. Expansion & reconfiguration is difficult 3. Easy to expand & reconfigure
4. Fault identification & isolation are not 4. Fault identification & isolation are
easier. relatively easier.
5. the data from a sender device to a 5. Data from sender reaches to central
receiver device is sent directly. hub, then transmits to the receiver.
6. Data collision occurs frequently. 6. Chances of data collision are less
7. The signal transmission in BUS is 7. The signal transmission is not
unidirectional. unidirectional.
8. Bus topology has terminators at both 8. Star topology doesn’t have any
ends of the network terminator.
Similarities between Bus & Star Topology
❏ Devices are not directly linked with each other. In STAR devices are connected
through a central hub & in BUS they are connected through central cable or
backbone.
❏ Data transmission is dependent on the healthiness of the central hub/cable.

Applications of Bus & Star Topology

❏ BUS topology is one of the first topology used in design of early Local area network.
Ethernet LAN uses BUS topology but they are less popular now.
❏ BUS topology can be used for further incorporate I/O devices like printers, scanners or
others in a network at home/workplace.
❏ Star topology is frequently used in high-speed LANs.
