1.0 Introduction

Many polymer materials are often damaged by natural environmental factors which from Earth's
surface and atmosphere when it used outdoor. Thus affect their useful life. In order to properly assess
their useful life in the outdoors, using the environmental testing equipment to simulate of each kind of
natural climatic conditions , study weather resistance of each kind of products in the laboratory has
become a wide and effective method.
BGD 865/A Bench Xenon Test Chamber(hereinafter referred to as B-SUN)can reappear the
damage from full spectrum and rain. This cabinet can reappear the damage which is arisen from outdoor
environment several months or years. It’s the simplest, most reliable and easiest use weathering
cabinet.

1.1 Professional Terms

1.1.1 Ageing behavior
Change in the properties of a coating during weathering or exposure to radiation.
NOTE: One measure of ageing is the radiant exposure H in the wavelength the range below
400nm or at a specified wavelength, e.g.340nm. The ageing behavior of coating exposed to artificial
weathering, or to artificial radiation, depends on the type of coating, the conditions of exposure of the
coating. The property selected for monitoring the progress of the ageing process and the degree of
change of this property.

1.1.2 Radiant Exposure H

Amount of radiant energy to which a test panel has been exposed, given by the equation:

H=∫ Edt
where:
E is the irradiance, in watts per square meter(W/m2 ).
T is the exposure time, in seconds(s).
NOTE 1: H is therefore expressed in joules per square meter ( J/m2 ).
NOTE 2: If the irradiance E is constant throughout the whole exposure time, the radiant exposure H is given
simple by the product of E and t.
1.1.3 Ageing criterion
Given degree of change in a selected property of the coating under test.
NOTE:The ageing criterion is specified or agreed upon.
1.1.4 Black Panel Temperature/Blackboard Temperature(BPT)
Temperature measured by a thermometer fixed on a black panel which exposed to Xenon lamps.

1.2 Test Principle

Artificial weathering of coatings or exposure of coatings to filtered xenon-arc radiation is carried
out in order to obtain the degree of change in a selected property after a certain radiant exposure H,
and/or the radiant exposure which is required to produce a certain degree of ageing. The properties
selected for monitoring should preferably be those which are important for the practical use of the
coatings. The properties of the coatings exposed are compared which those of unexposed coating
prepared from the same coating materials at the same time and in the same way (control
specimens ) or with those of coatings exposed at the same time whose behavior during testing in
exposure apparatus is already known (reference specimens).

1
B-SUN use Xenon lamps as artificial light source, and can modify the full spectrum sun light.
controlling the temperature .Its inner temperature can be properly controlled to obtain the periodic
precipitation on the sample for fully evaluating the damaged factor caused by sunlight and temperature
(materials aging phenomenon includes fading, disluster, intensity reduction, cracking, flaking, chalking,
and oxidation).

1.2.1 Simulated sunlight

During natural weathering, solar radiation is considered to be the essential cause for the ageing of
coatings. The same is valid for exposure to radiation under glass. The xenon lamp which is used by
B-SUN can reappear the full spectrum sunlight realistically, including ultraviolet rays, visible light and
infrared rays. For many materials, in order to achieve the precise simulation, especial do the color
change and color fastness to light test, it should be exposed by full spectrum.
There are three optical different filters used to get different spectra for various applications with
B-SUN:
① Daylight Filters : used to simulate noon summer direct sunlight, they can offer the best
correlation to the natural exposures for most fact applications. Materials which are typically used
outdoors like exterior coatings or outdoor rubbers should be tested using Daylight Filters. This test is
called as “Artificial Weathering Test”
② Window Glass Filter : Using 3mm thickness window glass to produce spectra equivalent to
sunlight coming through normal window glass. This spectrum can also simulate some indoor lighting
such as the harsh lighting found in a typical commercial or office environment. They are used for indoor
materials such as printing materials or textiles. This test is called as“ Exposure to artificial radiation Test”
③Extended UV filters:These filters allow excess UV, below the normal cut-on of natural sunlight,
used to simulate sunlight which doesn’t come through atmosphere .They are used to produce faster or
more severe test results.
The superiority of B-SUN is that it can be controlled and adjusted automatically during testing
process. As it is well known, the energy in testing process is the main factor in polymer materials aging.
In order to ensure reproducibility and comparability of testing results, the light energy is a very important
technical indicator. We adopt the principles which similar with Sun-eye automatically monitor the testing
process throughout the energy value, when the lamp energy is less than the expected value, the system
can automatically monitor the difference and automatically replenish energy immediately.

Picture 1:B-SUN Irradiance control principle

1.2.2 Control Temperature

In the whole test, controlling temperature is very important, because it effects aging speed. B-SUN
uses black panel temperature sensor to monitor samples fact temperature exposed at working room.
Moreover, controlling temperature is also important for getting a repeatable test results.

2.1 Main Features

◆ The Xenon light source correspond with international standards; ensure reproducibility and
comparability of testing results.
◆ Special catoptric system ensure the homogeneous distribution of irradiance.
◆ Irradiance energy can be accurately controlled. The "Sun-eye" control system can automatically
compensate the change of light intensity caused by ageing or other factors. The controllable range is
very wide.
◆ With Q-Lab’s xenon lamps, has a high irradiance, the lifetime can reach 2,000 hours.
◆ Optional light-filters can meet the requirements of many international standards.
◆ Real-time data can be collected and recorded. The incidental USB connector allow users to copy the
test data into a USB drive, achieving unattended operation.
◆ Touch screen and user-friendly operation interface allow handlers set the test parameters and

4.2 B-SUN Installation

4. 2.1 Installation site

Install BUV in the clean environment with relative humidity range is between 0 and 85%.
According
6
to the requirements of ASTM (G53) , B-SUN should be placed in the environment whose temperature is
between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. In order to reduce the air pollution and dirt, the site should be
ventilated. Don't install B-SUN in the easy-to-corrode or poisonous environment or near the corrosion
resistance tester.
There are a suction outlet and cooling fans under the B-SUN back, much hot air is exhausted from
the air outlet on the B-SUN top , and much fresh air is sucked from suction outlet. In order to cool B-SUN
fast and effectively, suction outlet and air outlet should be unimpeded, otherwise, B-SUN will be
damaged because of high temperature.
If B-SUN was installed near the wall or other sundries, it can affect B-SUN to control the
temperature. It would be much better if B-SUN can be installed in an air-conditioned room, so the room's
temperature can be kept between 21 ℃ ~ 27 ℃。Beyond this temperature, it will effect the B-SUN to
control the temperature.
4.2.2 Power supply
Ensure the voltage supplied to B-SUN is within the range ±10% of rated voltage. B-SUN's
Instantaneous power is 2,500 W. B-SUN with 220 V voltage uses 32 A circuit breaker (circuit breaker is
the part of main power supply switch). If a few units B-SUN are connected with the same circuit, then
every B-SUN should have enough over-current protection ability.
B-SUN voltage and frequency is marked on the nameplate of the machine, B-SUN should connect
with 16 A current, don’t need any extended wire, and have three feet grounding plug, terminal as below:
Live wire-red
Null wire-blue
Ground wire-green/yellow (double colors)

6.0 Installation and replacement for the common accessories of B-SUN

6.1 Xenon lamp

B-SUN has been installed a xenon lamp according to the customer’s requirement before leaving
factory.
The actual working life of the lamp vary from the working irradiance. The high irradiance will reduce
the expected life of lamp significantly. If the actual irradiance can reach set value, and still can’t
overcome it even after calibration, then the lamps should be replaced.
NOTE:
1 The power must be cut off before replacing the lamp.
2 The B-SUN irradiance must be calibrated again after replacing the lamps.

Please follow up these steps when replacing lamps:

13
1. Lift up the top cover:

Irradiance sensor

Dust-proof cotton

2. Loosen and pull out the left fast joint and irradiance sensor connector:

3. Loosen both ends screws of lamp cover and put them down to outside:

4. Take out the lamp holder and place it on the stable table, then loosen both ends screws which
used to fix the lamp wire :

14
5. Turn over the lamp cover, press down the back end of high voltage electrode which near the
lamp, hold the rubber on the right side of lamp and push towards the left so as to take out the
lamp:

Press down the back end (white base) of high

voltage electrode

6. Take out the lamp:

Picture 11:Replace the B-SUN xenon lamp

15
Note:
1. When dismantle or install xenon lamp, please handle it with care.
2. After take out the lamp, please inspect whether the reflector’s surface is clean or not, if not, please clean it with
soft cloth which with little alcohol.
3. Do not touch the lamp by hand directly because the oil of the skin will inhibit the transmission of the lamp.
Please wear the cotton or rubber gloves when you have to touch the lamps. In case you touched the lamps by
hand, please clean it with fiber glass cleaner or clean soft cotton cloth.
4. When install the lamp, please put the left spring into the original position, then install according to the steps
which described in 6.1, the main step of installation is pressing down the high voltage electrode to avoid any
damage to the lamp. Please make sure that the high voltage metal electrode has good contact with the lamp wall,
if not, the lamp will flash or can’t be lighten.

6.2 Filter

Most filters are made of special glass, long time exposure to strong lights or using unclean spraying
water (begrime on the lamp surface) will effect spectrum and energy coming from xenon lamp. So, it’s
necessary to replace filter periodically. We recommend to do replacement every 5,000 hours .
Please follow up these steps when replacing the filter:
Please follow up all steps from 6.1, after remove lamp cover, loosen 4 pcs screws which fix the filter.
Put one hand into the working room, push up the filter gently, then take it out carefully.
When install the new filter, please make sure that it is put in the groove, in case any damage to it
when install the lamp cover.

Picture 12:Replace the B-SUN filter

16
6.3 Dust-proof cotton

1. Open the top cover, loosen 4 pcs screws which fix metal mesh.

2. Take out the metal mesh and dust-proof cotton.

3. After cleaning or replacing the dust-proof cotton, install it with metal mesh in the original
position and fix the screws.
Picture 13:Replace the dust-proof cotton

6.4 Irradiance sensors

There is an irradiance sensor which monitors the working room irradiance emitted from xenon lamp.
Due to a long exposure to strong light, this sensor also will be aged, therefore can’t give a correct
irradiance reading. When the calibration coefficient is more than “10”, it means the irradiance sensor
should be replaced.

Please follow up these steps when replacing the irradiance sensor:

Refer to the steps which described as 6.1 “Take out the lamp cover”

17

Picture 14:Replace the sensor

6.5 Black Panel

The black panel is a resist-corrosion metal panel whose size is 150mm×75mm×1mm. Its surface is
coated black paint which has a perfect resist-aging performance. During the test, the black paint would
be aged and fade because the black panel has been exposed under ultraviolet. This black panel should
be replaced when its color difference with the back unexposed paint (△E)is more than 3.0.
Please follow up these steps when replacing the black panel.
1 Put the power switch to “OFF”position, and take out the plug from power socket.
2 Open the working room door, take out the holder of black panel.
3 Screw off the briquetting fixing thermometer and replace a new black panel.
4 Install the thermometer with briquetting.

18
Picture 15:Replace the black panel

7.0 Calibration

B-SUN calibration includes irradiance calibration and black panel temperature calibration
Xenon lamps can be used for a long time till its irradiance energy can’t reach the set value.
Because the control system lengthen the life of lamps with maximum degree during the whole test,
B-SUN should be calibrated termly(Recommended calibration period is 500 hours, otherwise irradiance
difference will occur because of irradiance sensor self aging)
As any other lamps, xenon lamps energy of B-SUN also decrease as time increase. The control
system would compensate it automatically through strengthening the voltage of lamps. But as the using
time become longer and longer, the energy of lamps decrease continuously. For some high set point of
irradiance, B-SUN couldn’t keep this irradiance any longer, and now the system of B-SUN would
reminder failure “the error of irradiance is too large” and shut off the machine. Now, the operator should
calibrate the B-SUN by standard calibration radiometer. If machine still can’t get the set point after
calibrating, the user should replace xenon lamp and calibrate irradiance again.
On the other side, after a long use , the temperature value read by B-SUN will drift a little because
of the temperature sensor self performance. So it’s necessary to calibrate temperature periodically
(Recommended calibration period is half a year.)

7.1 Calibrate irradiance

To calibrate irradiance, a radiometer which has been calibrated is necessary. Now, we recommend
these radiometers produced by Biuged.
BGD 8140----- Xenon Calibration Radiometer(340nm)
Calibration radiometer is consist of a senor and a meter which can show irradiance value(See
its operation manual for more detailed information)

Picture 16:BGD 8140 Radiometer

Radiometer is a high precise meter, the operator should keep the sensor glass be clean when using
it. And it should be kept in a dry and ventilated environment and far away high temperature, cool and
moisture.

Please follow up these steps to calibrate irradiance.

① Check the filter surface, ensure there is no any water drop or dirt at the glass surface.
② Put the sensor of calibration radiometer in the middle of test panel tray, its wire comes out from the
top left corner of door.
③ Close the working room door, turn on the B-SUN, set a suitable irradiance value as below table, set
the BPT as 63℃.

Table 1:Recommended set irradiance value when calibrating

Radiometer Controlling Recommended Irradiance
Irradiance Point Value for calibration
BGD 8140 340nm 0.5~0.8 W/m2

4 Connect B-SUN to radiometer with the USB line come with radiometer.
5 Click the “Mask door switch” (see Picture 5)in the B-SUN main window, make it become red,
means now B-SUN can work normally even the door isn’t closed well.
6 After the black panel temperature become stable(need 10 minutes), read the value shown on the

20
radiometer.
7 Enter B-SUN calibration windows (see Picture 17) and login.

8 Choose the correct controlling irradiance point (340nm)which is same as radiometer used, click its
back blue frame, then a keyboard will appear, input the reading value from radiometer and click the
back “Confirm”button, now, the showing value will be same as Calibrate value, then the showing
value will be same as the radiometer’s value and keep the same change, till reach the set irradiance
and become stable.

7.2 Calibrate black panel temperature

Please follow up these steps to calibrate temperature.
① Turn on the B-SUN and enter the main windows, now the B-SUN is on standby.
② Take out the black panel temperature holder, loosen the back screws and take out the thermometer.
③ Prepare a precise mercury thermometer(0.1℃ accuracy)which has been calibrated. Put them
together into a insulated cup with hot water(recommended water temperature is 60±10℃ ). Compare
the mercury thermometer value with B-SUN shown value. If the difference is more than 0.5 ℃ , then
calibrate B-SUN temperature.

22
④ See Picture 18, input the reading value from mercury thermometer into the blue“Calibrate Value”
and press“Confirm”.

8.0 Maintenance of B-SUN

The maintenance of B-SUN should be undertaken by the special technician who has received the
professional training. Daily maintenance can ensure a correct test results and extend B-SUN lifetime.

8.1 The recommended maintenance schedule

We recommend the operator to clean, check and replace parts B-SUN periodically according to
Table.2. This time is B-SUN work time, not lamps work time.

Table.2:Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Operation Time
Change BPT 1 year or faded
Calibrate BPT 6 months
Calibrate irradiance Per 5,00hours
Change air filter & water filter 6 months or as actual needs
Lamp has been used for 1500h or
Change lamps irradiance/temperature cannot
reach setting value
Clean reflector, light filter & every time of changing lamps or as
chamber walls actual needs

8.1.1 Clean filter

The impurities from spray water and air dust can make filter become dirty, thereby effect the lamps
working. So it’s necessary to clean filter located at the top of working room after every test.

8.1.2 Clean the working room

Even the working room is made up of stainless steel, it’s still also become corrosion because of
pollution come from test specimen or bad water. Operator should clean its surface periodically with
detergent specially used for stainless steel, keep it surface be clean and smooth.
Please follow up these steps to clean B-SUN working room:
1 Turn off all power supply of B-SUN
2 Open the B-SUN door and pull out test panel holders tray and take out all panel holders.
3 Clean the working room, then install these parts according to the above steps reversely.
Note :
1. Don’t use steel wire to clean the working room, otherwise will damage its surface and lead to rust. Cotton yarn
is a suitable too. Also don’t use any solvent disinfected by chlorine. Special cleaning agent for stainless steel or
any other similar agent is suitable.
2. After cleaning the working room and sample trays, use a wet cotton to clean its surface residue. And use
deionized water to clean working room.
