The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has issued a warning about the future of the world's natural
World Heritage sites. It says half of the sites are at risk from different industries. The WWF warned
that harmful industrial activities such as mining or drilling for oil are endangering the future of 114 of
229 sites. Other factors adding to the risk include illegal logging and unsustainable water use. All of
these are in addition to the damage being done by climate change. The WWF says the sites affected
include Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon National Park in the USA, and China's

The director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre said it was up to everyone to protect these

conservation is shared by everyone." She welcomed government efforts at reducing what they take
from the Earth. However, the WWF said that more than 11 million people worldwide rely on World
Heritage sites for food, water, shelter jobs and medicine, and that non-stop development could harm

A theme park in France has started a new and environmentally-friendly way of dealing with
litter. It has trained six "intelligent" rooks to pick up rubbish. Rooks are members of the crow family.
The birds will work at the Puy du Fou theme park in west France. They have been trained to pick up

The first vehicle that resembled the bicycle was put together in 1645 in France by Jean Theson. It

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an
ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them.
However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed.
Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years
ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds
and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all

Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not
limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that
required climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex. Unfortunately,
the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which
easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also
damaged the images inside. Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have

Opononi, New Zealand, was a quiet little town by the sea. Most of the men worked as fishermen.
In the summer of 1955, they noticed that a strange sea animal was following their boats. At first the
men thought it must be a shark. But the animal came closer and closer to the boats. Before long
everyone could see it was a dolphin. One of the fishermen named her Opo - after the town.
At first, Opo was shy, as many wild dolphins are. But she was curious, too. Every day she swam
closer to the boats. Finally one of the fishermen reached out as far as he could with his oar. He
scratched Opo with it.
She reared back in the water. But the oar must have felt good, for soon Opo came closer than ever
before. Then she rolled over. The men had to laugh. Opo was plainly saying, "Scratch my belly this
time."
A scientist came to look at Opo. He said Opo was a young dolphin who had probably lost her
mother. That was why she was swimming alone. Opo might have been an orphan, but she soon found a
new family. The whole town of Opononi adopted the friendly dolphin.
