that harmful industrial activities such as mining or drilling for oil are endangering the future of 114 of
229 sites. Other factors adding to the risk include illegal logging and unsustainable water use. All of

include Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon National Park in the USA, and China's
Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, which are home to more than 30 per cent of the world's endangered

sites. She said: "World Heritage is humankind's common heritage, and the responsibility for its
conservation is shared by everyone." She welcomed government efforts at reducing what they take

A theme park in France has started a new and environmentally-friendly way of dealing with
litter. It has trained six "intelligent" rooks to pick up rubbish. Rooks are members of the crow family.
The birds will work at the Puy du Fou theme park in west France. They have been trained to pick up
cigarette ends, paper and other things thrown on the ground. The birds pick up the litter and put it into a
special trash can. This delivers bird food as a reward. The more litter the birds put in the trash can, the
more food they get.
The head of the theme park explained why it is using the crows. He said there were several
reasons. He said: "The goal is not just to clean up ... but also to demonstrate that nature itself can teach
US to take care of the environment." Crows are very sociable and intelligent birds. They may be as
smart as a seven-year-old child. The theme park head said: "In an affectionate, supportive atmosphere,
they like to communicate with humans and establish a relationship through play." The crows are quick
workers. They can fill a bucket with rubbish in nearly 45 minutes.

The teddy bear is a child's toy, a nice soft stuffed animal suitable for cuddling. It is, however, a
toy with an interesting history behind it.
Theodore Roosevelt, or Teddy as he was commonly called, was the president of the United
States from 1901 to 1909. He was an unusually active man with varied pastimes, one of which was
hunting. One day the president was invited to take part in a bear hunt; and as Teddy was President, his
hosts wanted to ensure that he caught a bear. A bear was captured, and tied to a tree; however, Teddy,
who really wanted to hunt a bear, refused to shoot the bear and, in fact, demanded that the bear be
extricated from the ropes; that is, he demanded that the bear be set free.
The incident attracted a lot of attention among journalists. First a cartoon drawn by Clifford K.
Berryman to make fun of this situation appeared in the Washington Post, and the cartoon was widely
distributed and reprinted throughout the country. Then toy manufacturers began producing a toy bear
which they called "teddy bear". The teddy bear became the most widely recognised symbol of
Roosevelt's presidency.

At the University of Kansas art museum, scientists tested the effect of different colored walls on
two groups of visitors to an exhibit of paintings. For the first group the room was painted white; for the
second group, dark brown. Movement of each group was followed by electrical equipment under the
carpet. The experiment showed that those who entered the dark brown room walked more quickly,
covered more area, and spent less time in the room than people in the white one. Dark brown made
people more active, but the activity ended sooner. Not only the choice of colors but also the general
appearance of a room affects those inside. Another experiment presented people with photographs of
faces whose energy was to be commented. Three groups of people were used; each was shown the
same photos, but each group was in a different room. The first group was in an ordinary room and the
second group was in a nice office. The third was in a tastefully designed living room with carpeting.
Results showed that the people in the beautiful room tend to give higher marks to the facts than those in
the ugly room did. Other studies suggest that the students do better on tests taken in comfortable room
than in ordinary-looking or ugly rooms.

The water we drink and use is running short in the world. We all have to learn how to stop
wasting our limited water. One of the steps we should take is to find ways of reusing it. Experiments
have already been done in this field.
Today in most large cities, fresh water is used only once, then it runs into waste system. But it is
possible to pipe the used water to a purifying factory. There it can be filtered and treated with
chemicals so that it can be used again, just as it were fresh from a spring.
But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. Then
we could turn to the oceans. All we would have to do to make use of the seawater on earth is to get rid

Although Asia has a rich cultural heritage, with written records extending back some 4,000
years, libraries were slow to emerge in the region. Temples and centers of religious learning
established most of the earliest Asian libraries that had sizeable collections. These institutions
developed in the period that roughly corresponds to the European Middle Ages, from about the 5th
century to the 15th century. At the same time, court libraries grew to coexist with religious libraries in
most Asian countries. Use of these libraries was restricted to court officials or to religious leaders. It
was not until the early 20th century that Asian libraries became accessible to a wide public, and for the
most part, public library systems did not emerge until after World War II ended in 1945.
In general, Asian libraries have been slow to automate their operations, although many libraries
in China, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan do have computerized systems. In the late
1990s most computer use in Asia was limited to microcomputer management of circulation. However,
the public has access to online catalogs in increasing numbers of Asian libraries, particularly in
documentation centers and national libraries. The high cost of international telephone lines and the
slow delivery of documents from overseas have inhibited more rapid growth of online searching.

Scandinavia has ranked as the best place in the world to raise children. The Nordic region holds
the top three places on the US News & World Report's list of "The Best Countries for Raising Kids" in
2020. The list has been compiled annually since 2016 in collaboration with the University of
Pennsylvania. Denmark topped the list, with Sweden a close runner-up, and neighbour Norway edging
out Canada for third place. The 2020 listings will come as little surprise as the three nations also ranked
highest on the list for 2019. A spokeswoman explained: "These countries tend to have generous
paternal leave and maternal leave, offer free preschool and have good overall public education
systems."
The listing was released as part of the annual "Best Countries" list. This survey adopted "a global
perceptions-based" approach in examining data and attitudes. It used research from the World Bank, as
well as the opinions of 20,000 people in the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Researchers tested countries against 65 different metrics, or what the researchers called "country
attributes". These included income equality, well-developed public education and healthcare systems,
human rights, gender equality, safety, family friendliness and levels of perceived happiness.
Switzerland once again topped the "Best Countries" list, followed by Canada and Japan.

While few people claim to be addicted to it, ice cream is certainly a great favourite among people
of all ages in many parts of the world. Although it is commonly believed to have originated in China,
and has long been associated with Italian manufacturers, it doesn't actually come from either of those
countries. Ice cream originated when chemists in the Middle East worked out that adding salt to water
reduces its freezing point, making it possible to cool it below its normal freezing point without turning
it to ice.
Folklore also holds that Nero, the Roman Emperor, invented water ice during the first century AD
when he sent slaves up in the mountains and made them pass buckets of snow, hand over hand, to his
banquet hall, where it was mixed with honey and wine. However, there is nothing to prove that tale.
Well, one way or another, the method for making this delicacy found its way into Europe. The
first book to mention it was published in Italy in 1530. At that time, water ices were typically served by
monarchs and other important people as a special treat on great occasions. The British are supposed to
have been responsible for coming up with the idea of using cream in their ices instead of plain water,
and thus ice cream as we know it today was born.

The first vehicle that resembled the bicycle was put together in 1645 in France by Jean Theson. It
was, however, a four-wheeled machine. A two-wheeled contraption was invented in Germany in about
1816. To ride it, the passenger sat on a seat and propelled himself by running on the ground.
The two-wheeled bicycle as we know it today was invented in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1839
by a blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan. It had a steerable 30-inch front wheel and a 40-inch
rear wheel. This bicycle had no pedals or chain-activated gears. There were, instead, two foot pedals
attached to rods that connected to the back wheel. The alternate movement of rods on either side
propelled the bicycle.
Unfortunately for Macmillan, his invention never became popular. It was left to a French father-
and-son team, Pierre and Ernest Michaux, to build the bicycle from which the present popularity of the
vehicle is derived. By 1865 the Michaux family was producing 400 bicycles a year.

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an
ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them.
However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed.
Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years
ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds
and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all
other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not
limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that
required climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex. Unfortunately,
the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which
easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also
damaged the images inside. Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have
destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely recognizable. To prevent
further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered.

Opononi, New Zealand, was a quiet little town by the sea. Most of the men worked as fishermen.
In the summer of 1955, they noticed that a strange sea animal was following their boats. At first the
men thought it must be a shark. But the animal came closer and closer to the boats. Before long
everyone could see it was a dolphin. One of the fishermen named her Opo - after the town.
At first, Opo was shy, as many wild dolphins are. But she was curious, too. Every day she swam
closer to the boats. Finally one of the fishermen reached out as far as he could with his oar. He
scratched Opo with it.
She reared back in the water. But the oar must have felt good, for soon Opo came closer than ever
before. Then she rolled over. The men had to laugh. Opo was plainly saying, "Scratch my belly this
time."
A scientist came to look at Opo. He said Opo was a young dolphin who had probably lost her
mother. That was why she was swimming alone. Opo might have been an orphan, but she soon found a
new family. The whole town of Opononi adopted the friendly dolphin.
