We’ve relied on the incandescent lamp to grow our food and heal our bodies for
over 100 years. It is the closest mimicker of incandescent sunlight, of ALL man-
made light technologies. Below is the ACTUAL emission spectrum of 250W our
Incandescent Heat Lamp, referenced from Philips Brand. [1]
INCANDESCENT

OUT THE TOXINS
SUPERIOR QUALITY &
EFFECTIVENESS OF
INCANDESCENT HEAT THERAPY
It’s All About the Water Absorption.
SaunaSpace incandescent heat lamps don’t produce as much ambient heat as
a far-infrared emitter. The Pocket Sauna (inside air temperature ~110-125°F)
doesn’t get as hot as a far-infrared (inside air temperature ~150°F) or traditional
steam sauna (inside air temperature ~110-125°F). This is because it doesn’t
have to. The benefits of sauna therapy don’t come from raising the temperature
of the air.
They come from raising the core temperature of the body. Granted, one
way to accomplish raising body temperature is by remaining in a hot enough
environment for an extended period of time.
How our incandescent sauna works instead is by heating the body radiantly,
from within.
This graph above was built using data points from the above referenced
Wikipedia article.
INCANDESCENT
LIGHT
HOW OUR ANCESTORS
PHOTOBIOMODULATED THEIR
MITOCHONDRIA
WHAT IS PHOTOBIOMODULATION
(PBM)?
Our Cells Eat Light!
Photobiomodulation (PBM), is a term from the field of photobiology, which
studies the biological effects – both beneficial and harmful – of light
wavelengths on living organisms. You may have heard of PBM referred to
alternatively as: low-level light therapy, red light therapy, mitochondrial
stimulation, mito-stim, or simply light therapy. Different names for the same
thing.
PBM occurs when light photons are absorbed by living tissue, but not just any
light will do. PBM is only possible within a certain wavelength range on the
electromagnetic light spectrum: specifically from 600-1000 nanometers. This
range is known as the ‘mitochondrial stimulation band’ (or ‘healing band’)
because only these wavelengths of light stimulate the cellular mitochondrial light
receptor enzyme, cytochrome-c oxidase. It thus encompasses both red light
(600-700nm) and a portion of near infrared light (700-1500nm). When light from
within this band of wavelengths is absorbed by the cells of the human body, the
cell responds by increasing ATP production, releasing Nitric Oxide, and forming
Reactive Oxygen Species – all of which work to produce large-scale systemic
benefits to the health of the body. Some, but not all, of the studied benefits of
PBM are: promotion of anti-aging, enhancement of athletic performance,
improvements in memory and cognition, accelerated muscle healing, and
boosted cellular regeneration.
The utility of PBM as a non-invasive therapy with such a wide range of benefits
is truly amazing. It’s no surprise, then, that there is a new and increasingly
crowded market for personal photobiomodulation devices, all making unique
claims to superiority. The question at the heart of this article and Joovv’s is this:
which of these various light technologies are actually effective at providing PBM
to consumers?
“Most of the early work in this field was carried out with various
kinds of lasers, and it was thought that laser light had some
special characteristics not possessed by light from other light
sources such as sunlight, fluorescent or incandescent lamps and
now LEDs. However all the studies that have been done
comparing lasers to equivalent light sources with similar
wavelength and power density of their emission, have found
essentially no difference between them [emphasis mine].” [3]
To summarize, Dr. Hamblin is saying here that there is no difference between
different sources of light (LED and incandescent, for instance) in terms of ability
to provide PBM. Only two characteristics of light
matter: wavelength and power density. As long as the light produced is within
the recommended therapeutic ranges of both these variables, the source does
not matter.
What is Incandescence?
Incandescence describes the phenomenon wherein an object, when heated to
high enough temperatures, produces light — think of red-hot metal, coal, or the
sun. Incandescence is decidedly not monochromatic in terms of the
wavelengths of light that it produces. Our incandescent bulbs produce what we
call full-spectrum light, in a wavelength emission curve that spans, with our
bulb’s red filter from ~600 to over 4000 nanometers. To visualize, think about
the example of the sun: the sun’s light gives us every shade of every color of
the rainbow. The question becomes, which breadth of wavelengths is preferable
to get the full benefits of PBM?
Dr. Michael Hamblin’s research, and that of countless others, concludes that
PBM is achievable across the broad 600-1000nm range. Hamblin writes:
Dr. Hamblin’s research shows that, in fact, PBM is achievable across the full
600-1200nm range. Mitochondrial stimulation PBM has been shown to occur
strongly across the 600-1000 range.[5]
The following Figure from Mechanisms clearly shows the ‘optical window’ from
600 to 1400 nm.
For those who are intimidated by physics and calculus, not to worry, there are
many easy online calculators that do the tricky math for us!
RESULT
Therefore the radiance, or total energy emitted, = 650336 W/m2/sr across all
wavelengths (0-10000nm)
RESULT
Band Radiance = 90763 W/m2/sr
In context, irradiance takes into account the amount of light energy that a
person will receive from a light therapy device at a given distance from the light
source. Proper irradiance is key to proper PBM, once we’ve established that the
light source is producing the right wavelengths of light, which we have at this
point. Using the analogy of light as medicine, now that we know that we have
the right type of pill (wavelength), it’s important that we’re taking the right dose
(irradiance) for the medicine to be effective. In this case, the known dose for
proper PBM with red wavelengths is between 10 mW/cm 2 and 100 mW/cm2.
So, in essence they are implying that only a small fraction of their already
undervalued irradiance measurement actually applies to PBM, where in reality,
virtually 100% of the wavelengths measured by the meter are PBM active and
the 3% calculation is totally irrelevant.
This is just one more in the list of misleading claims by Joovv. But wait, there’s
more…
PROTECTION FROM
EMF STRESS
OUR ANCESTRAL LIFE WAS FREE
FROM ALL MAN-MADE EMF
Real Luxury is Being EMF Free.
SaunaSpace understands the serious problem of EMF stress: man-made
magnetic and electric fields have been shown in many studies to be nervous
system stressors. You definitely don’t want EMF stress coming from your
therapy device!
SaunaSpace design solutions ensure our products exert ZERO EMF influence
on the body when used as directed. That means ZERO electric field stress and
ZERO magnetic field stress.
At the SaunaSpace recommended use distance of 12-24 inches from the Single
Light Panel, you don’t get any EMF from our product.
Same goes for our 4 Light Panel, no EMF from it on the body at 12 inches,
much less at the 4 Light Panel’s recommended 18-24 inch use distance.
“Mitochondria are thought to be a likely site for the initial effects of light, leading
to increased ATP production, modulation of reactive oxygen species and
induction of transcription factors. These effects, in turn, lead to increased cell
proliferation and migration (particularly by fibroblasts), modulation in levels of
cytokines, growth factors and inflammatory mediators, and increased tissue
oxygenation.”
What is Anti-Aging?
When we repair both the DNA architecture and the gene transcription systems,
we are restoring the optimal epigenetic state of the cell. Gene transcription
refers to how the cells rebuild themselves. Gene transcription is a tremendously
complex system that involves many steps of quality control. As our cells and
bodies age through exposure to environmental stressors like chemical toxins,
our epigenetic state degrades and our cells rebuilt themselves less optimally.
More errors occur over time, and the entire cell becomes less efficient and less
optimal: in short, we age.
That’s why heat therapy detoxification is not enough for us to fully heal and re-
optimize our bodies. We need to use Near Infrared Light to restore our
Epigenetics to the optimal biochemical and bioluminescent state.
On the other side of the optical window, water absorbs all light of wavelengths
greater than 1150nm. [8]
Since we have water molecules everywhere in our bodies, it’s obvious that far-
infrared light won’t ever penetrate deeply; it is blocked by water in all tissues.
Far infrared sauna manufacturers are forced to use expensive metal shielding
to lower these high EMF levels, which increases costs & results in decreased
far-infrared light emission into the sauna. In other words, low-EMF far infrared
saunas primarily rely on heating up the air around the sauna user to heat the
user’s body, and are therefore little different than traditional saunas.
Traditional Wet/Finnish Saunas only Provide Heat Therapy, not Light Therapy
Traditional saunas produce heat generated by electricity or less commonly
wood burning. They may be dry or wet.
Dry saunas use electric heaters that typically emit harmful levels of
electromagnetic energy (EMF). A typical dry Finnish-type sauna operates at
180°F or greater and heats the body from the outside in.
Heat Therapy
Sweat Therapy
Hyperthermic Therapy
Sauna Therapy
Sweat Lodge Therapy
When doing this in the tissues of the body’s core, we activate the whole body’s
detoxification response. This is called whole-body or systemic heat therapy. It’s
the full-body heat therapy that results in dramatic healing effects for the entire
organism:
Sweating during vigorous exercise also raises the body temperature, but
actually decreases deep organ blood flow, which means very little detoxification
takes place.
In today’s toxic world no one can avoid exposure to harmful substances. Sauna
therapy is a cornerstone of defense in the fight against toxin related illness and
dysfunction.
Longevity
A recent landmark scientific study published in a major medical journal
demonstrated a significant decrease in mortality (increase in longevity) with
sauna use. [9] Benefits observed included significant decreases in fatal heart
attacks and deaths from other cardiovascular diseases.
Saunas also provide many of the same benefits as aerobic exercise. Both result
in sweating which provides detoxification but of course, the sauna detoxification
is much more extensive and powerful. Sauna use also increases metabolism,
heart rate, and improves circulation like exercise but does so in a stress-free,
relaxing environment.
Skin Rejuvenation
Care for your body’s largest organ! Your skin is a major organ for eliminating
body wastes through sweating. Most people don’t sweat enough.
Near infrared saunas encourage sweating and unlock toxins stored beneath the
skin bringing deeper toxins to the skin for elimination. NIR light easily
penetrates the skin, boosts circulation and brings more blood and nutrients not
only to the skin itself but to deeper tissues as well.
NIR light is being used currently to treat specific skin problems such as acne
scars, eczema, rosacea and more.
Treating psoriasis with light therapy is probably the oldest known therapy for
this skin disease. Bathing in sunlight to relieve the symptoms of psoriasis is
an age old remedy.
NIR light provides new hope for those that suffer from psoriasis. NIR light
therapy has been shown to help heal psoriasis non-invasively without side
effects.

The 1150 nm and greater wavelengths emitted comprise the “thermal infrared”
that heats our tissues, because water absorbs most light wavelengths above
1150nm. We get plenty of thermal infrared wavelengths from our incandescent
heat lamp for effective, gentle, feel-good sweat therapy.
We use red glassed bulbs in Near Infrared Sauna Therapy, because the red
glass minimizes glare by filtering out the blue, green and yellow visible light
(400-600 nm) emitted, so we only enjoy the healing full-spectrum thermal light
emission of red, near infrared and thermal infrared.

INCREASED ENERGY AND IMPROVED MOOD
I purchased my SaunaSpace this past February after having used a Far-infared sauna for
the past 8 years. I loved the detoxification effects of using the sauna, but it often left me
feeling depleted and tired. I noticed two very big differences when I started using the Near-
infared SaunaSpace. The first is that I had increased energy and mental cla
rity after the sauna. No more feeling tired! I also noticed improved mood and sense of well-
being.
The tungsten red heat lamps give the effect of being in the sun without the radiation. My
old sauna felt a little claustrophobic but I love the feeling of being in the tent. As you rotate
around the stool every 5 minutes, time flies. You leave the sauna with more energy and
better mood. Having used a hot rock sauna, steam shower, and Far-infared sauna, I can say
that the SaunaSpace is by far the best. It’s easy to put together and conveniently fits into
the corner of a room. I highly recommend it!

Wow! That was a hard winter with the cold and flu virus. I saw so many patients coming
thru my pharmacy with symptoms of the virus. Cold, wet winter, no sunlight, low vitamin D
may be a huge factors this year. Luckily for me, I have the Sauna Space. I used it twice a
week and I did not get sick at all.

I LOVE MY SAUNA SPACE 4 LIGHT PANEL!
I have been using infrared sauna's for almost 20 years, but recently purchased the Near
Infrared 4 Light Panel and retrofitted it to the ceiling of my existing sauna. I find it is MUCH
better than my old far infrared sauna, as I sweat much more. I love the quality and
craftsmanship of the sauna space products and the customer service is excellent!

A few years ago I purchased a FIR Sauna after weeks of research on everything pertinent to
consider. This 3-person sauna is 100 percent cedar and I have used it often in the past
three years.
Disadvantage #1 - Time
Preheating the sauna to 130F expended 30 minutes, this is when I would enter the sauna. It
took another 20-plus min
utes to reach 147-150F which is the minimum I need to feel the first drip of sweat. After the
sauna reaches 155F is when I really start sweating and I start counting those minutes, so
add on another 20-30 minutes. This is getting close to 2 hours including preheating and
sitting in there for approximately 50 minutes.
I wasn't as concerned about electricity costs at first, until I got a few increases on my bill.
My goal was to use the sauna 3 times a week, but considering it was taking a big chunk of
time, I started to scale way back, plus I was thinking about EMF exposure, even though my
sauna is rated as low EMF. I was now using the sauna a few times a month in the winter,
and never in the warmer months.
Solution - Adding a NIR Panel
I began reading about the benefits of NIR therapy (including cancer therapy) and how one
could easily *make* their own light panel. I was intrigued and wanted to add these bulbs to
my sauna to speed up the sweating process. However, I have zero tools and I also know
that its not that easy considering supplies have to be thoughtfully researched regarding
EMF, off-gassing and wiring. Aesthetics are very important to me, I love the look of my
cedar sauna and what I was finding on line was plain ugly and HUGE. I spent another few
weeks researching, looking at DIY plans, blog sites offering chicken wire boxes with
exposed light switches, chandelier type units that I didn't want to risk drilling a hole into my
cedar wall for, etc. I was going to give up and then did a search on Amazon and found the
most sublime light panel, but horrors it was "currently unavailable" ! Thankfully, the
manufacturer was listed which turned out to be SaunaSpace.
Conversion to NIR
I found their website immediately and after contemplating my existing space and lots of
measuring, I purchased the table, stool and the 4-unit light panel. I have never tracked
anything so closely and when the Fed-X man delivered the boxes, I immediately knew I was
going to save them, they are that pretty and well-designed, so don't worry about shipping.
When I opened the box with the table and stool, I was blown away by the wood. It is like
Amish furniture, you would know the comparison because the wood is silky smooth and
very solid. Both pieces went together in 5 minutes without tools. When I opened the box
with the NIR 4-panel unit, I silently mouthed *no way* I was that impressed, same beautiful
wood, seamless construction! This is worth it, the workmanship is clearly evident in every
detail, the stainless steel cages are beautiful and easy to open, the light switch toggles are
solid, the rounded corners, totally furniture grade.
The interior dimensions of my sauna are 58 wide, 44 deep, 74 high. The bench in the sauna
is 18 inches high and deep. The table fits perfectly against the opposite wall from the sauna
control panel. It lines up with the height of the bench. There was NO need to drill anything
into the wall to hang the panel, since it is perfectly stable on the table alone, plus the height
was right where I wanted it. All I had to do was lift the sauna bench and drape the electrical
cord inside to the existing sauna's electrical connection at the other end, plenty of cord
length, fished it out the exit hole and plugged it into the wall with the sauna. No tools, no
revisions. I placed the stool at the far end and I have over 4 feet between myself and the
panel, plus there is room to turn, but I also use the existing bench. This took me about 10
minutes! See photos.
First use: I preheated the sauna using its existing FIR heaters to 125F degrees (in the past it
was 130). I stepped in and turned on all 4 lights of the SaunaSpace, whoooaaa! Instant
warmth, exactly what I was hoping for. I was watching the sauna control panel very
carefully as to temperature and time, checking it every minute. I couldn't believe it when I
felt the first trickle of sweat at exactly 7 minutes of elapsed time, and the temperature in
the sauna was.....136 degrees!!!
My sauna is so much more comfortable at these lower temperatures. I don't want to get
out, its like I'm in a gentle rain and even my shins sweat. Before, I felt I was suffocating at
155 degrees plus the time sitting and waiting to sweat was annoying. This is how I use both
technologies: I set the original FIR heaters to 125 degrees on the panel. When I get into the
sauna, I turn on the SaunaSpace NIR Panel, it shoots the temperature up to 135 very
quickly, which then turns off the FIR heaters. The SaunaSpace keeps the cabin heated to
about 131 degrees without the other heaters turning back on (no EMF). Concurrently, the
temperature, time and timers, plus music and above cabin lights are on until my timed
session comes to an end. It truly is the best of both worlds. I also leaned a Himalayan salt
slab against the floor heater for negative ions when the cabin preheats (see photo).
I have been using my *new* sauna for one month. Because it is so pleasant and time
efficient, I use it four times a week instead of sporadically as mentioned above.
Subsequently some nagging injuries from mountain biking have resolved themselves. I
thought I'd never get full function back in my hand, now I can get a glove on and shift gears
(plus I'm typing this at warp speed) without pain. I forgot about my hip when I realized that
twinge is gone and lastly, a nagging shoulder injury from going over the bars a few years
ago is also gone. I am not exaggerating, I wouldn't take the time to write this long review.
Lastly, for the women, my skin is looking different, firmer, and more even-toned. I have had
red patches on my jaw area for years which have largely abated and a strange red circle on
one cheek, that I could never understand. My dermatologist mentioned rosacea, but I
didn't want to use a prescription cream. Right now my skin looks really good!
Brian is the inventor and when I first called to inquire about his product, he answered the
phone. I subsequently e-mailed a few times about measurements and revisions, and I
know I was a PITA. He always answered quickly, and he was extremely helpful. I felt
completely reassured with the 100 day trial period, and the lifetime warranty. I like his
ideals and these are the businesses I want to spend money on. My own philosophy on how
to determine if the cost is worth it...is to divide the cost into how many times I was going to
use this (a lifetime) and that extra couple of hundred dollars was nothing in comparison to
its aesthetic appeal and function. Right now, I'm pretty popular with my other biking
buddies. Thanks for taking the time to read this very long review.
