GENDER INEQUALITY
Gender inequality is a concept used to describe unequal behaviors, attitudes and perceptions that
individuals are exposed to according to their gender. This concept reflects the inequalities between the
two sexes that can be encountered in many areas of daily life. While current policies around the world
cause inequality among individuals, it is women who are most affected. Gender inequality undermines
women in many areas, especially in education and business life.
First of all, girls and women are unable to exercise their fundamental human right to education because of
gender disparity in education. This phenomena is a significant issue on a local, national, and global scale.
Furthermore, it has been a significant difficulty in the past, and the battle related to it still exists now. For
many African females, for instance, five years of schooling is the most they can hope for, and they are the
fortunate ones. Approximately 33 million girls between the ages of 6 and 15 who live in sub-Saharan
Africa do not attend school. Compared to 41% of unenrolled boys, 56% of them will never even set foot
in a classroom(UNESCO Institute for Statistics)¹. Moreover, Both girls and boys are constantly watched
over by their teachers and other school personnel while attending school, but girls are subjected to more
scrutiny and have their behavior and appearance frequently judged. For example, girls should not be loud,
should have good manners, should have their fingernails clipped, and so on. As a result, girls tend to
participate less in conversations and ask fewer questions to reduce the chance of drawing attention.
Additionally, this has a negative impact on their desire to learn. Girls tend to behave and act more in
accordance with the existing gender norms and roles as a result of this approach toward them in schools,
internalizing them as they get older.
On the other hand, women who experience discrimination in several areas of society also experience it in
the workplace. Unfortunately, women who show their presence in the business world still have to struggle
with gender equality and discrimination. There is a widespread belief that women are especially well
suited to 'feminine' sorts of work, with caring for others and performing other unselfish deeds for the
benefit of others being significant characteristics. Education, healthcare, and elderly/home/child care are
all considered feminine sectors. 'Masculine' industries, however, exhibit more autonomy, reason, and self-
focus. Engineering, mining, and utilities are examples of masculine industries. Due to the perception that
feminine work is humanitarian in nature (even within a masculine profession), it frequently receives
lower pay than masculine work, which is seen as results-driven and vital to maintaining the economy.
There are even many metaphors put forward to better understand these inequalities experienced by
women in business life, for example, Glass Ceiling² concept is used to describe all the invisible and
unexpressed barriers that prevent women from rising regardless of their success due to discrimination.
The 'Invisibility Paradox'³ explains the double invisibility situation experienced by women in occupations
or sectors with a male population. When women are visible in terms of their gender, they become
professionally invisible, and when they are professionally visible, they become invisible as gender.
In conclusion, It can be inferred that gender inequality is a concept that when one gender experiences
regular favoritism or priority over the other due to discrimination based on gender. Therefore, women are
disadvantaged by gender inequality in many sectors, particularly in education and workplace by being
stereotyped and underestimated.
