3. Which one of the following would not be a good strategy for avoiding procrastination?
To avoid procrastination, you need to stay with tasks. Taking long breaks increases the
likelihood that you will not return to the task at hand.
A priority is something (or someone) that matters. It takes precedence over other items or
activities.
5. According to the textbook, the best time to create a daily to-do list is:
It's helpful to make daily a to-do list when unfinished tasks and activities are still fresh in your
mind—usually the night before.

6. If you are creating a daily to-do list, be sure to:
Since you may not get to everything on your list in a single day, it is critical that you complete
the most important items. These should be your priorities. Your to-do list should reflect your
priorities.
7. When you have a mental conversation with yourself, you are engaging in a process called
__________.
A. internal communication
B. thinking out loud
C. self-talk
D. talking points
8. According to the text, there are __________ inner dialogue voices that speak to us and

9. "This assignment is very hard. Maybe I wasn't meant to graduate from college" is an example
of a comment voiced by the internal __________ within us.
A. child
B. adolescent
C. critic
D. adult
The internal critic in us predicts failure. It casts doubts on our abilities and causes us to worry.
People become perfectionists in response to the demands of their internal critic, who says that
since they are never quite good enough, everything they attempt must be perfect.
Because they tend to be older, nontraditional students can be very conscious of time. They
want to make up for lost time in the workplace (and in their lives) and as a result sometimes
take on more courses than they can successfully handle.

15. According to the textbook, the biggest "time" problem facing commuter students is:
Commuter students have busy lives and often do not make time to meet other students and be
involved in the life of their college.
16. The primary reason people procrastinate is because they are lazy.
FALSE
People procrastinate for a variety of reasons (lack of closure, unfinished business, burnout,
etc.), but not simply because they are lazy.
17. Feeling a sense of closure about your assignments can help you to avoid procrastination.
TRUE
Closure is the positive feeling you get upon completion of a task. It gives one a sense of
accomplishment, which translates into feelings of success. Closure helps you avoid
procrastination.

18. Burnout is a contributor to procrastination.
TRUE
Burnout brings a sense of fatigue, boredom, and stress. When people feel burned out, they
feel a lack of energy and tend to put off tasks that they might ordinarily complete.
19. Balancing breaks and work can help you avoid burnout.
TRUE
When you take a break from work, you switch tasks. Whatever form this break takes
(recreational or other), it affords you a change, which will help to avoid burnout.
20. Because Global thinkers tend to multitask, they are less likely to procrastinate than Logical
thinkers.
FALSE
Just the opposite is true. Global thinkers tend to be spontaneous. They look at life's big picture
(rather than its details) and they see choices. Unfortunately, they can sometimes get
overwhelmed by the many choices before them and delay completing important tasks. Without
realizing it, Global thinkers can fall victim to procrastination.
21. It will be harder for you to procrastinate if you establish a routine with set study times.
TRUE
Establishing set study times imposes an order on your routine and reduces the possibility that
you will postpone important tasks.

22. When you have a large assignment (e.g. a term paper or project) to complete, you should
divide your work into small, manageable tasks.
TRUE
Breaking large assignments into small pieces makes the task seem more manageable.
Students who can divide assignments in this way will be less likely to procrastinate.
23. The best way to manage your time is to look no further ahead than one week.
FALSE
To manage time effectively, you need to have a clear sense of the entire semester's
requirements. This means looking beyond one week and seeing what lies ahead. A term
calendar will allow you to see the whole semester's requirements at one time and to plan
accordingly.
24. It would be a mistake to try to anticipate the amount of time you will need to complete specific
assignments.
FALSE
Anticipating the amount of time assignments will take is a useful practice. It can help you plan
your week.

25. If you schedule your week without leaving time for recreation, you will increase the chance of
experiencing burnout.
TRUE
Make sure you include recreational activities when you're planning out your week.
26. Most people who create daily to-do lists use them effectively.
FALSE
In fact, most people do not make good use of to-do lists. They don't prioritize their activities
effectively, choosing to do easier and more enjoyable tasks first. As a result, they sometimes
fail to attend to difficult or unpleasant items that nevertheless require their attention.
27. When creating a daily to-do list, it's essential that you prioritize the tasks and activities you
include on your list.
TRUE
Unless they set priorities, people will tend to do activities that they regard as fun or easy and
postpone more challenging, less pleasurable tasks.

28. If you are prioritizing activities on your to-do list, plan to accomplish the easiest and most
enjoyable tasks first and leave the rest until later.
FALSE
It's essential that you plan to complete items that you consider most important, regardless of
whether they are easy, interesting, or pleasurable. Otherwise you run the risk of postponing
tasks that are very important, but perhaps not exciting or enjoyable.
29. It is easier to solve challenging problems or memorize a speech in the afternoon than in the
morning.
FALSE
In general, the morning hours are more conducive to mental processing and memory learning.
30. Some people resist making to-do lists because they don't know what to put on such a list.
TRUE
Start with information on your weekly calendar. Add other priorities. As you develop your list-
making skills, you'll get a better idea of what you need to include.
31. Self-talk can influence, either positively or negatively, your ability to manage time and achieve
your goals.
TRUE
Self-talk, defined as the internal communication people have with themselves, can be positive
or negative. It can affect people's ability to manage time and accomplish goals.

32. Listening to the voice of the child inside you can have a positive effect on your ability to be
productive.
FALSE
The child is the voice of fun and immediacy. It invites you to enjoy yourself and to avoid tasks
that you regard as dull or difficult. It does not encourage you to work hard or to engage in any
activity that is demanding. Listening to the child's voice would most likely discourage you from
being productive.
33. If your self-talk takes the form of statements such as "This is too hard for me," "I'm hopelessly
confused," or "Maybe I'm not cut out for college," you are listening to the voice of the critic
inside you.
TRUE
The critic is the voice of negativity. It causes you to question your abilities, talents, and goals.
It often causes worry and self-doubts.
34. Limiting your work on a task to short (ten-minute) intervals can be an effective way to maintain
your concentration.
TRUE
Even when faced with a difficult or unpleasant task, most people can remain focused for short
periods. They may even be able to attend to the activity for a second or third ten-minute
interval. By approaching difficult tasks in this way, many people can maintain their focus and
concentration.

35. Becoming a perfectionist is an effective response to the voice of the critic in you.
FALSE
36. Once you have realized how destructive the critic in you can be, it is easy to silence and
disregard that voice.
FALSE
The critic is a difficult voice to silence because it strongly influences your thoughts and
behavior. Its messages often get internalized in your belief system. The solution is to replace
worries with other thoughts.
37. In contrast to the child, the internal adult is the voice of logic and reason.
TRUE
Your adult voice is one of three inner dialogue voices. It's the part of you that thinks
analytically and solves problems rationally.

38. Nothing good ever results from procrastination.
FALSE
Life sometimes requires people to make difficult choices. On occasion people have to change
plans, postpone actions, or make other decisions that keep them from pursuing a goal or
going forward. While people in such situations may seem to be procrastinating at these
moments, they are really making the best decision for themselves in light of their
circumstances. The key lies in why people are choosing to postpone actions or leaving things
undone.
FALSE
While it is important to have goals and priorities as you begin college, you should nevertheless
be open to reassessing those goals and even developing new priorities. You may discover a
new academic or career interest while you are in college, or you may realize that something
that was once a priority is no longer one. Reassessing your priorities is hardly a sign of a lack
of commitment. Rather, it's evidence of maturity.

42. The term suitcase students refers to students who transfer from one college to another, never
staying at any one school for very long.
FALSE
The term suitcase students refers to commuter students, people who carry their school "lives"
in backpacks and briefcases.
43. Though they don't live on campus, most commuter students are heavily involved in campus
life.
FALSE
For many commuter students, getting involved in campus life is a difficult task. Many
commuter students juggle jobs, family responsibilities, and school. They must also contend
with the challenge of commuting, which limits students' contact with their campus.
FALSE
Just the opposite is true. Since life is unpredictable, it makes sense to leave time in your daily
schedule for unplanned events-traffic jams, difficult weather conditions, and so on.

45. Whether you travel to college by car or public transportation, your daily commute can be a
highly productive time.
TRUE
Provided you aren't behind the wheel, your commute to school can provide opportunities to
read, review notes, and catch up on missed text messages and phone calls. Even if you are
driving, you also converse with classmates about the material you are studying.
A common myth is that people procrastinate because they are lazy or don't care enough about
a task to follow through and complete it. In fact, people procrastinate for other reasons: lack of
closure, unfinished business, and burnout.

49. How has technology changed students' work and school lives?
Technology has extended most people's workdays. It has fostered an environment in which
people are constantly "on." They can now receive correspondence (via texts and email) at any
time, watch news at any hour of the day, and work on research papers around the clock.
What's more, whereas students once received course work only while physically in the
classroom, they must now check their email regularly for assignments, course updates,
messages from professors, and so on. This almost nonstop barrage of media, while engaging
in some respects, is distracting in others. It can give people a false sense of being productive,
while in fact contributing to their procrastination.

51. Discuss five tips for avoiding procrastination.
To avoid procrastination, students should divide work into small manageable chunks; set
deadlines and share them with others; reward themselves for completing tasks (especially
difficult or unpleasant ones); keep going forward, especially when faced with difficult
circumstances; ask others for help; establish a routine; create a study environment; and use
technology to their advantage.

Because you may not be able to complete every item on your to-do list, it's critical that you

delay completing important but difficult tasks in favor of ones that are less important but more
enjoyable and interesting. If your to-do list is to be effective, it must prioritize the items in order
