Hardware Recommendation Guidelines

There are many possible combinations of network design requirements and

possible Vyatta configurations. This document is to be used as a general
guideline for recommended system hardware requirements.
The three examples given in the table do not necessarily represent a real
installation, but are indicative of system requirements based on load.
Please Note: Although a system may boot-up and may even run in any given
configuration of HW and SW, it may not function at optimal levels if
consideration is not given to demands that a particular configuration may
make on the system resources.

OTHER DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

These are to be used as a guide to indicate situations where the
requirements for Memory, CPU or Disk space should be increased.

Memory intensive

Number of routes
Number of routing protocols

CPU intensive
VPN
Multiple Routing protocols

OSPF (during network changes)

Number of routes
Firewall/NAT
SNMP

Hard Disk

Logging capacity
(the more things that the system is running the more logging messages and
higher potential need for use of logging)

VYATTA APPLIANCES
Vyatta has designed several pre-configured appliances that are built using
x86 standards-based systems that demonstrated optimal performance for a
specific application. For more information on Vyatta appliances visit
