The period of time between 1600 and 1800 when the shoguns had more power and control than the
emperor.
Emperor - the emperor of Japan ruling by divine right believed to be a god top of the social
hierarchy
Shoguns – military generals of Japan’s military samurai and daimyo pledged allegiance to shoguns in
shogun Japan
Daimyo – Rich nobles of Japan controlled shoen and all taxes of the shoen went to the daimyo
Samurai- warriors of Japan followed bushido the way of the warrior pledged allegiance to the
daimyo or the shogun
Artisian – skilled craftsmen making clothing art and furniture too provide for their family
Merchants – selling people who sell objects low in the social ladder
Peasants- farmers made money by farming rice and paid taxes to the daimyo
Tokugawa ieyasu one of the great unifiers of Japan later became shogun

The role of the Peasant was to work for their feudal lord the daimyo. As seen in source 1 “ Edict on
the Change of Status” – 1591 the upper class and the shogun manipulated peasants with new Laws
and manipulate their protection with samurai . The peasants Job was that the men would Farm, and
the woman would make silk at a loom (source B) “ her husband must work in the fields and the wife
at the loom”. Peasants were controlled by Taxes and the samurai ( source 4 ) . The lifestyle was not a
lavish one Their tax was anything they did not need to survive it would be taken and have to save
food for winter (Source B)” therefore they must not give rice to their wives and children at harvest
time but must save food for the future.”
