CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

This study aims to determine whether collaborative learning at Holy Infant

Academy of Anda Inc. benefits students’ academic performance. The survey also

looked into whether Grade 10 students in the St. Lucy and St. Peter sections were

fully participated in group projects and studies.

1.1 Rationale

In Sanskrit Shlokas, a man without education is referred to as an animal.

Despite the fact that hundreds and thousands of men and women in developing

and underdeveloped countries remain illiterate. They go about their daily lives,

eating and sleeping regularly. Education plays an important role in our lives

because, as they say, “Education is the key to success”. That is one of the reasons

we have achieved success in our lives. It has become one of the bases of work

descriptions, providing us with countless opportunities and new learning. According

to Socrates, “Education means bringing out of the idea of universal validity which is

latent in mind of every man.” It defines that education is the fundamental key to

express their ideas/judgements that exist in their rationality.

Teachers on the other hand, are the foundation of education because

education would not exist without them. Teachers are the backbone of our

democracy because they provide us with prior knowledge that allows us to

distinguish between accurate and false beliefs. They give today’s youth the power

of education,

offering them the opportunity for a better future. We all know that teachers are our

second parent, and they practically teach everything from academic teachings to

real-life lessons, which is why they play such an important role in society in the field

of education.

Teachers have their strategies that they utilize to help students begin to

understand the learning process. Strategies encourage flexible thinking and teach

students the value of adapting their methods to various challenges. Teachers used

different teaching styles in their classes, but the most prevalent are the coach style,

activity style, and group style or collaborative learning.

Collaborative learning is a teaching and learning strategy in which group of

students work together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. It

has a variety of advantages depending on how the students use it. A particular

benefit of collaborative learning is that it allows groups to work together for a long

time over a course. Team members will get to know one another and expand their

activities outside of class. Students will contact one

another for assistance with queries or problems, and they will frequently continue to

communicate in subsequent terms (Bean, 1996). Collaborative learning promotes

the promotion of learning communities inside classrooms and institutions (Tinto,

1997).
Collaborative learning develops higher-level logic, oral communication, self-

management, and leadership abilities. Encouragement of student-faculty

interaction. Student retention, self-esteem and responsibility have all improved.

When it comes to collaborative learning, the task will be distributed evenly among

the members,

decreasing the burden on the leader. It is one of the many benefits of collaborative

learning. However, contrary to Filipino culture, the leader frequently performs all

tasks rather than assisting others through teamwork and cooperation.

The only problem with collaborative learning is the peer pressure exerted by

the group leader, who controls the co-members. Members frequently rely on the

group leader because they feel he or she is capable of doing everything, which is

not the case. It became a problem since no one was carrying out their

responsibilities as a team member. They are expected to participate and not rely on

the leader. The responsibility that the group leader will carry, even if it should not be

a burden, is there because that is why they are gathering to share ideas and

opinions on the task that has been assigned. We wanted to recognize the students’

perspectives on whether collaborative is an effective teaching strategy.

The researcher aims to achieve the following study objectives:

1.) To determine the effectiveness of collaborative learning on every selected

Grade 10 student in Holy Infant Academy of Anda, Inc.

2.) To determine the impacts of collaborative learning to the following:

2.1 Academic Performance

2.2 Learning Capability

2.3 Leadership Skills

1.2 Outline of the study

The thorough summary or review of the literature relevant to this research

study will be presented in Chapter Two. The literature study looked at the

effectiveness of collaborative learning on Grade 10 students of Holy Infant

Academy of Anda, Inc.

The type of methodological approach used in this research study, the

introduction that also introduces the outline of this chapter, discussed what this

research aims for, for the research method used in this study, which is the

qualitative approach, how the interview was conducted, the process on how and

why the sample was collected, the method used in collecting data, and the process

of data analyzation are all included in Chapter Three. It also includes ethical

considerations that researchers should follow, as well as the studies limitations and,

finally, the chapters end or conclusions, which provides a judgement reached by

reasoning.

In Chapter 4, it will show the results of the research study or findings, as well

as the profiles of the students who willingly participated and were also interviewed.
In Chapter 5, the findings are discussed in relation to the study questions

that were supplied to the students who volunteered to participate.

In Chapter 6, it consists of recommendations for students who may have

benefited on collaborative learning, as well as recommendations to group leaders

who are obliged to guide members, and for teachers to assist the group leaders so

they would be aware what are their lacking as group leader.
