Module #1

SCIENCE - Grade 8

2nd Quarter
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

OVERVIEW

This module will help you understand the relationship of kinetic energy and potential energy to
work and cite applications of it in different conditions. Law of Conservation of Mechanical energy will
be discussed here as well. For Day 1, you will work on GEAR UP to DIP INTO activities only.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: In this lesson, you will explore and find answer to:
1. why are work and energy important to life on Earth?
2. how can energy possess by an object change its position, motions or its environment?

Objectives: By the conclusion of this module, you will be able to:

1. describe how energy is related to work.
2. differentiate potential and kinetic energy.
3. relate speed and position of objects to the amount of energy possessed by a body.

Good day! How’s your morning? Do you have a good night sleep? ______ . Have you eaten
your breakfast? ______. What food do you have this morning?
____________________________________. Are they energy boosting? _______. Why did you say so?
____________________________________.

Well, I hope your answers are all positive and have something to do with energy enrichment for
you will have lots of amazing activities today. Remember that Nutritionists said that the most important
meal of the day is breakfast. It is where you get most of your energy for a day.
We Filipinos value eating breakfast so much as this serves as an avenue for family members to
talk about things that might lift our motivation to finish our work for the day. So have a dose of healthy
breakfast with them daily.
Speaking of values, other countries from around the world once again admired Filipinos for
showcasing our “Bayanihan” culture in this time of pandemic. This remarkable culture of ours refers
to the spirit of communal unity and cooperation. One Bayanihan act that has been observed and
appreciated this pandemic is the sharing of free meals not just for our frontliners but for the homeless
as well. Let’s take time to read one of the articles about Bayanihan and get inspirations from the
people who devote their time to serve others.

FILIPINO COMMUNITY GIVES BACK TO

FRONTLINERS THROUGH DONATIONS, FREE MEALS

NEW YORK — You may not see it – but behind those

N95 masks are big smiles, as these healthcare workers take a
much-needed break from saving the lives of COVID-19 patients.

2 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

These New Yorkers opened their hearts and their wallets to give thanks and celebrate the heroes of the
medical battle against coronavirus.
This is what Kabisera, a Filipino-owned café in New York City, calls its coffee runs, where customers
donate funds via Venmo so Kabisera can warm the hearts of frontliners with their drinks and snacks.
This is what bayanihan in America looks like, according to Kabisera’s Augee Francisco.
“We want to do our part, and we fill the needs of our frontline workers, we know the risk that they are
taking,” said Francisco. “We need to do our part, and our part is to bring happiness to people.”
Some call it a circle of giving — exhausted frontliners get to catch their breath with free food and drinks,
while businesses struggling in an economy on pause gets a lifeline, from New Yorkers stuck at home wanting to
give back to those who save the lives of many.
“It gives business to small businesses like us Kabisera, it gives jobs to workers, it gives benefits to our
frontline workers – this is a cycle of goodness.”
This cycle of goodness continues in the neighboring state of New Jersey, where some Filipinos are
serving free meals to frontliners.
“The giving out of the food and helping the delivery is really a small act, but it could be expressed in a
bigger way if the community do their part and give back.”
“These are stressful times,” said nurse Roselle Militante. “So all these donations, the prayers, the
messages of hope that we’ve been receiving really help to relieve the stress.”
With the spirit of bayanihan, these Filipinos in the East Coast believe, it’s easier to survive the crisis —
that even in the most challenging times, human kindness will always shine through.

Guide Questions:

1. How did Filipino business owners in America serve the frontliners?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

2. How does this simple act of kindness help frontliners do their duty?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

3. If you will be given a chance to show a simple act of kindness to our medical warriors, what
would it be and how will you do it?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________

Medical experts all agree that aside from preventing yourself to be exposed to the Covid-19
virus, the best defense that we can have is a healthy body. This will give our immune system enough
energy to fight the health complication when you get infected by the virus.
How do you think serving nutritious meal to the frontliners help them achieve healthy body and
do their job?

3 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

The glucose (chemical energy) produced from the food that they eat can be converted into a form
of energy (mechanical energy) that can either used by their body in improving their immune system or
in performing their job.

So, with this we can say that energy is very essential in performing our day-to-day work. Let’s
learn more about this kind of energy that helps us execute our physical duty by performing the simple
activity below. You may ask someone to help you and again always follow precautionary measures in
doing it.

Home- based SCILab

Let’s have a quick check of your understanding in this activity

If you did simple research on energy, you might say that Mechanical energy is the type of energy
present in this activity. Potential (stored energy) and Kinetic (energy in motion) are the 2 types of it.

1. We can say that just before the marble hit the cup; it has a lot of kinetic energy from rolling down
the ruler. The marble slowed down after it hit the cup, meaning that it had less kinetic energy.

2. The cup moved when the marble hit the cup. Therefore, the marble exerted a force on the cup
when they collided. This movement means the marble did work on the cup. Some of the kinetic
energy of the marble was transferred to the cup.

Where you able to enjoy the activity that you did? What about your family members? You may do
more exciting observations on the effect of the marble’s kinetic energy by using a bigger one, check
how far will the cup reach as you increase the size of the marble. Record your observations and be
ready to use it as we go on a deeper discussion on Mechanical energy.

So, before we end this session, I would like you to write down all the realizations that you’ve
learned today from the exercises given. Reflect your thoughts here.

Then go to the checklist at the last page of the module and write “done” under remarks. This is all for
today.

Good day! Hope all is well with you and your family. Today is your 2nd day of working on this
module and you will concentrate on FOCUS ON only.
Before you proceed, I want you to look at the important terms that you need to know so you can
fully understand our lesson. Take note of the definition of terms below and remember it as we go along
with our discussion.

Points to remember

5 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

Energy - Property of an object to do work or “Capacity to do work.”

Mechanical energy (ME) - energy possessed by an object due to its position and motion.
Quantitatively ME can be computed by getting the sum of KE and PE.

2 types
a. Kinetic energy (KE) - is energy due to motion
b. Potential energy (PE) - stored energy due to the interaction between objects or particles

Have you ever been to a bowling alley? Perhaps you will notice that when you rolled the ball and
hit the pins a change happened as the pin fell over. This change occurred because of the energy present
in the ball which is Kinetic Energy (KE) and it is present in all moving objects. There are 2 factors that
affect the KE of a body, namely the speed and the mass of the object. Let’s discuss the relationship of
each factor to KE one by one.

1. Kinetic Energy (KE) and speed of an object

Let’s take a look at figure A, which do you think between the two cars has more KE? ________.
Why? _____________________________________________________________________________.

s= 15 m/s s= 25 m/s

Figure A - Two
identical cars moving
on a straight path

The faster the motion of the object the greater it’s KE. So, if you answer Car 1 you are correct since it
moves faster than Car 2.

2. Kinetic Energy (KE) and mass of an object

What about the cars in figure B? Which do you think has greater KE? __________.
Why? _____________________________________________________________________________.

Figure B – A truck and

a car moving at the
same speed

6 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

The greater the mass of the object the greater it’s KE. So if you answer the truck you are correct since
it is bigger than the car.

In summary we can say that the greater the speed and mass of an object, the greater it’s Kinetic
Energy. Quantitatively KE can be computed using the equation below.

KE = ½ mv2 or mv2
2

Now let’s use the equation given to solve for the KE of

this F1 car with the given data. mass = 624 Kg
speed = 150 m/s.

Solution: KE = mv2
2
= 624Kg (150m/s)2
2
= 624 Kg (22500 m2/s2)
2
= 93600 Kg m2/s2
2
KE = 46800 Kg m2/s2 or Joule

At this point, let’s check your understanding on Kinetic Energy by answering the questions below.

1. Explain how a fast-moving bowling ball can cause more change than a slow-moving bowling ball.

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________.

2. How does kinetic energy change as you quickly walk to your dining area and sit on your chair?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________.

Let’s take a quick check of your answers.

1. The fast moving bowling ball has more kinetic energy than a slow moving one and can cause
more change because it is moving faster.

7 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

2. As you quickly walk, motion and kinetic energy increase; both decrease when you sit down.

Were you able to get all the correct answers? If yes, you may proceed but if not, then you should go
back to the discussion on Kinetic Energy and correct your misconceptions.

The next part of the discussion will focus on the different kinds of Potential Energy, the factors that
affects it and the example for each type. So if you’re ready then let’s start.

Always think that energy is not just observed in moving objects but also on objects at rest. For
example, if you hold a ball in your hand and then let it go, the gravitational interaction between the ball
and Earth causes a change to occur. But before you drop the ball, it already has a stored energy which is
called the Potential Energy (PE). The gravitational, elastic and chemical PE are the forms of this energy.

Let’s differentiate the three forms of Potential Energy.

1. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) – It is a kind of stored energy due to its vertical position or
height. Take note that even if you’re just holding a book, GPE is stored between the book and
Earth. However, you increase its value by lifting it higher from the ground. In addition, GPE also
increased as the weight of an object increased.

Now take a look at the figures on the left and

answer the question.
Who do you think stores more GPE on the
books, is it Justin or Joey? _______Why?

Figure D - Joey is
Figure C - Justin reading
carrying books for
her favorite book.
donation.
________________________________________

Let’s take a quick check of your answers.

If you answer Joey then you are correct. First is that Joey is carrying books while Justin is with
one book only. Second is that Joey lifts the books higher from the ground than Justin. So with the
increased weight (no. of books) and height on the books, we therefore can say that Joey stored more
GPE on the books.

Let’s check your understanding on Gravitational Potential Energy by answering the questions
below.

8 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

1. What factors determine the GPE stored between an object and Earth?

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________.

2. Which has greater GPE, dropping a bowling ball from a height of 1m or dropping a tennis ball from
the same height? Why?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________.

Let’s take a quick check of your answers again.

1. An object’s weight and its height above Earth determine GPE.

2. Dropping a bowling ball since it has greater mass than the tennis ball

Were you able to get all the correct answers? Good job! If yes but if not, try to go back to our
discussion on GPE and correct your mistakes. You will just be allowed to go to the next part if you able
to answer all the questions correctly.

Now let’s move on to the next form of Potential energy which is the Elastic Potential energy.
2. Elastic potential energy (EPE) – It is a kind of stored energy as a result of applying force to
deform elastic objects such as springs and rubber bands. A good example is when you stretch a
rubber band. When you release the end of it, the stored EPE will be converted to kinetic energy. This
transformation is very much obvious when the rubber band flies across the room. Other example
objects with EPE are illustrated below.

Figure E – Tommy Figure G - Sky riding a pogo stick.

Figure F - Steve playing a
stretching a rubber
sling shot.
band.
Let’s check your understanding on Elastic Potential Energy by answering the questions below.

1. What changes when an elastic band is stretched?

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________.

9 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

2. What characteristics make an object effective at storing EPE?

_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________.

Let’s take a quick check of your answers.

1. Its EPE increases when the elastic band is elongated or deformed. This change in shape is where
the EPE is stored; the elastic band will cause change in order to return to its original shape.
2. An object must be able to withstand a change in shape – flexibility – and also quickly return to its
original shape.

Are your answers correct? If yes you may proceed to our last form of Potential energy which is
the Chemical potential energy but if not, go back to our discussion on EPE and make some corrections
on your answers.

3. Chemical Potential Energy (CPE) – It is an energy stored in chemical bonds of a substance. A

good example is the food that we eat. Our body uses the chemical potential energy in our food for all
our activities. Another is the use of gasoline to power cars and buses.

Figure I - Gasoline
on vehicles

Figure H - Eating healthy

food

Now let’s check your understanding on Chemical Potential Energy by answering this question.

1. How are the calorie contents of various foods related to their potential energy? Give an example to
explain it well.

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________.

10 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

Take note that our example might not be the same but if we have the same idea then consider
your answer correct. Now let’s check your answer.

Calories are one way of measuring the amount of energy that food contains. As a calorie count
increases, the amount of chemical potential energy increases. For example, ice cream has more CPE per
gram than celery because each unit of ice cream has more chemical bonds or higher chemical bonds.

If you able to answer the question correctly then you are now ready for more challenging task.
Again, you will just be allowed to advance to the next task if everything is clear to you about Kinetic and
Potential energy. To test your readiness, I want you to differentiate Kinetic and Potential energy using
your own words. Write your answer below.

At this point, I want you to look at one of the famous activities that we do this pandemic to burn
our calories and bond with our family and that is biking. Let’s try to apply our knowledge about KE and
PE in explaining how it helps us burn calories as we pass on a certain track.

Point B

Point A Point C

Let’s try to describe the amount of our body’s KE and PE then look at how it affects our exerted ME as
we pass the track. Analyze the picture and the graph

below.

1. In which point/s is KE greater than PE? What factor do you think affects its value?
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________.

11 Science 8
Module name: Newton’s Laws of Motion

2. In which point/s is PE greater than KE? What factor do you think affects its value?
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________.

3. What can you say about the amount of ME in each point? Explain your answer in 2-3 sentences
only.
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________.

4. How do you think biking helps us burn calories?

________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________.

Let’s check your work, remember that are answers might not be exactly the same but as long as
our points or ideas are the same consider your answers correct.

1. Point A and C is where KE is higher in value than PE. This is the part of the track where a biker
tends to move fast so he can go up and down the hill and based on the discussion, speed influence
the amount of KE. The faster the speed, the greater is the KE of an object and vice versa.
2. Point B is where PE is higher than KE. The height of the track and the sudden stop of the biker
influence the value of PE.
3. The amount of Mechanical Energy is the same in all points of the track since it is measured by
getting the sum of KE and PE.
4. When you go biking, the calories from the food that you ate which is in CPE form will be
converted to KE.

Flight attendant creates and sells baked products amid pandemic

Each #asensocabincrew story is unique. We
have featured a lot of stories of flight attendants who
did not allow the pandemic to hamper them from
pushing forward in order to reach their goals. Despite
all the challenges faced, these flight attendants placed
up not just any kind of business, but they poured their
hearts and passion into their products and services.
Cebu Pacific flight attendant Michelle Garcia
was also greatly affected by the pandemic. Due to
flight suspensions, her income was depleted. Being a
mother to a 5-year old girl, Michelle had to act quick
yet, she really had to discern well too.
Michelle thought of putting up a business but she did
not know what kind until she remembered
something. "Cooking is my passion. I’m a proud
kapampangan, so it's natural na mahilig ako magluto. This lockdown gave me the opportunity to do what
I have always loved. We were given a choice of whether to fly or not. For the safety of my five year old
little girl, I chose to stay at home," Michelle said.
Michelle then opened her Baked Goods business where, as the name says, every dish and product
are baked. "I sell ube cheese pandesal, sushi bake, burnt basque cheesecake, banana loaf and cookies.
Customers have to order in advance," she shared.
According to Michelle, her best sellers are ube cheese pandesal and sushi bake. Ube cheese
pandesals are priced at 180 (regular size) & 280 (large size). Sushi bakes, which are made from fresh
ingredients like crab, shrimp and salmon, are 550/ tray.
For her, this pandemic turned out to be the greatest equalizer. "Once you’ve been inflicted
with the disease, money and power don't help much. I’m thankful that I still have a job but there is
so much uncertainty around it, and bills are piling up. Instead of dwelling on it I chose to make my
everyday life more fruitful and productive. At the same time, I'm doing what I love to do: cooking,"
she shared.
A crisis like this will bring out either the worst or best in you. It is up to you which you shall
unleash. For our flight attendant entrepreneurs like Michelle, they chose to bring out the best in them.
They chose not to allow anything to stop them from winning. Just like becoming a flight attendant, there
is no choice but to "pass the grueling training" in order to earn their wings.
“Instead of focusing on the difficulties caused by this pandemic, continue to work hard and
whatever it is that you choose to do, strive for excellence. There are a lot of opportunities to earn if
you look in the right places. Have a thing you've always wanted to do but never had the chance or
time to do it? With this pandemic, you can avoid regrets and 'what ifs.' Just do it." -Michelle Garcia
'Diskarte, hindi arte' is what they say. Regardless what kind of business they opened or whatever
means (for as long as it is legal) these flight attendants have resorted to in order to make ends meet, they
are winners in our hearts.

You’ve read another inspiring story of a person who never let this pandemic put her down. Her
“Diskarte hindi arte” mentality is truly inspiring and that her creativity leads her energy to the right
direction. Do you know somebody with “Diskarte hindi arte story”? Write their story below and tell us
how we can get inspiration from it.
