It takes an artist to make art. One may perceive beauty on a daily basis.
However, not every beautiful thing that can be seen or experienced may truly be
called a work or art. Art is a product of man’s creativity, imagination, and expression.
No matter how perfectly blended the colors of a sunset are and no matter how
extraordinarily formed mountains are, nature is not considered art simply because it
is not made by man.

Let’s Get Started

In one of your encounters with art through museum visits, musicals, and
plays, among others, have you ever felt disconnected from an artwork? Was there a
point in time when you did not understand what message the art was trying to
convey? If yes, write the name of the artwork in the box and attach an image of the
artwork, if possible. Explain why you think you did or did not understand the art using
the space provided on the next page.

Hills of Nikko,” 1964

Artist: Jose T. Joya
I did not understand this painting when I first saw it. I was confused about the artist
of the painting wants to portray. Its abstract and seeing it will give us question, what
is the idea behind the painting. The image it produce was not complete, theres a lot
of things going on when we see the painting. I really thought that the emotion of the
artist of the time he made the painting wasn’t good and there are random things on
the painting. Its like the artist was just playing with the painting brush which turns out
a beautiful art. According to what I researched that this painting was considered as
finest of the nine paintings that the National Artist exhibited at the Venice Biennale of
1964.

Let’s Work on This

Answer the following questions as precisely yet as thoroughly as possible.
1. What art field will you explore? Why
Answer: The art field I want to explore is photography because I want to have
advance knowledge and skills in capturing images. Especially I am not good
in taking pictures. I want to learn more about photography, I want to capture
and preserve all the experience and memories I, my friends, family and
relatives have. Those photographs can transport me back to specific
moments in my life. Also photography serve as a communication tool that can

convey message or story. I want to capture pictures that can provoke the
emotions of other people. Not only happy face, but also all the emotions in the
face of the people. They say pictures don’t lie. So I think photography is the
best way to know what other people’s emotion so that I know how to comfort
them.
2. How can you utilize the arts to express yourself, your community, and
your relation to others?
Answer: I can utilize the arts to express myself, my community and my
relation to others by making a drawing or painting about how I feel about my
life, towards my community and towards other people. With the use of art, I
can use it to show my creativity and communicate my thoughts, feelings and
emotions. Like in helping in my community, for example in suggesting solution
to a problem that our community is facing, I can think of creative ways and
communicate with the leaders to what ideas I can suggest which can be
helpful in our community. Also in showing my relation to other people by using
art like the use of rainbow colors can show that I support the members of
LGBTQ community.
