You should never repeat any- thing you don*t understand. This does not mean that you must be able to translate everything word for word; it simply means that you should be able to-attach a meaning to what you hear and repeat. A good technique is to try to form pictures of what you are repeating. In certain kinds of eae xpress” exercises you will find yoursel= becoming very adept at making the correct responses without being aware of what you're saying. Guard against this! Always think about what you're saying. When you begin to think in Ttalian, you'll find it much easiar to monitor what you're saying. STUDENT GUIDE DESCRIPTION OF COURSE The Italian Headstart for Ttaly program consiats of a unit on Italian pronunciation and five modules with accompanying tapes. ‘The pronunciation unit gives you some hints on Ztalian sounds and the Italian writing aystem. The emphasis has, of course, been put on differences between English and Italian and not on similar- ities. You'll find examples of how these sounds are cormonly written, Each of the five modules is divided into units (thzee to five wnits per module). ‘The units of Modules Iv and V are further divided into parts; each part or unit of Modules IV and V is a complete lesson. the learning activities for each part or unit 1. Conversation 2. Notes on the Convereation 3. Exercises 4. Self-evaluation Quiz Unit~by-unit objectives for each module are stated at the beginning of the module. Additionally, some units in Modules IV and V contain Supplementary Vocabulary lists that appear just before the Self-evaluation quizzes (smQs). The last section of each module is an Italian-English Glossary. A soparate booklet contains the Cumulative Glosaary (Italian-English ana English- Ttalian). Modules I through III, excluding the expansion units, are mandatory and should be studied in sequence, Average completion time for students who have never studied Italian is 30 to 40 hours. The expansion units and Modules IV and V are optional; material from these units is not included in the und-of-Course Test. When you have completed the first three modules, you can study any Parts of Modules Iv and y that are of particular interest to you. Its purpose is to give you practice in listening and in intelligent guessing. It is very important that you try to understand as much as possible without looking at your text.
