1. Safety
1.1 Key to symbols  operations to be performed
additional important information and hints
text sections particularly worthy of note to ensure the safe
operation of load cell PD 2.

1.2 Description Please keep the above in a safe place and make accessible to
personnel at all times.
The description is part of the package supplied and should be read
carefully prior to assembly, operation and maintenance.
All jobs listed in this description should be performed by qualified or
suitably instructed personnel only.

1.3 Safety hints Never insert your hand or tools in moving rollers.

Never touch the edges of running webs.

2. Function
2.1 Intended usage Load cell PD 2. may only be used to measure web tension.
Load cell PD 2. measures the tension exercised by the web on the
measuring roller. The web should run round the measuring roller at
between 60° and 180°. The load cells at both sides of the measuring
roller are connected to an electronic amplifier which evaluates the
signals.

2.2 Design Load cell PD 2. consists of an outer and inner ring and two flanges.
The centring rings on both flanges enable the load cells to be mount-
Outer ring Measuring roller ed exactly.
The measuring roller ball bearing fits into the inner ring. The inner
ring is also the measuring element, a bi-directional flexing yoke on
which strain gauges, in the form of a full electrical bridge are
mounted.
With exception of PD 25 fixed mechanical stops protect the load cells
from overloading up to ten times the nominal measuring range.

Types PD 21, PD 22, PD 23 and PD 25 are identical apart from their
mechanical design and material.
The load cell
- PD 21 is open at one side. The measuring roller axle extends to
the inner ring and features just one flange with a boring.
- PD 22 is open at two sides. The measuring roller axis extends
through both flanges.
- PD 23 is open at one side and is made of stainless steel (Niro).
- PD 25 is open at one side and is made of aluminium.
The third and fourth digit of your load cell indicates the axle diameter
for which it is intended. Thus, for instance, load cell PD 2120 is suit-
able for an axle with a 20 mm diameter.

B page 3
Load cell PD 21, PD 22, PD 23, PD 25

2.3 Operation mode A stabilized DC voltage from the electronic amplifier feeds the fully
balanced strain gauge bridge. The web tension generates a resultant
“web tension” in the measuring direction. This resultant web tension
causes an imbalance in the strain gauge bridge and alters its output
voltage. This output voltage is a signal which reacts in relation to the
web tension.

2.4 Measuring principle The measuring principle is based on the determining of the radially
aligned bearing forces of a measuring roller around which a web is
wound.
Load cell PD 2. measures all tension factors in the measuring direc-
tion. The measuring direction always corresponds to the direction of
the plug. Tension factors at right angles to the measuring direction
are not registered, although they do stress the load cell. Should the
load cell mounting position no longer be on the horizontal plane, the
dead weight of the measuring roller must be taken into consideration.

2.5 Calculation of resulting  Proceed as indicated in the following diagram when calculating
web tension the resulting web tension.
 Determine the web wrapping angle around the roller. A wrapping
angle of 90° should always be aimed at.
 Now specify the measuring direction and calculate the resulting
web tension (see examples, page 5).

B page 4
Load cell PD 21, PD 22, PD 23, PD 25

Always try to achieve a measuring direction on the horizontal

plane as this ensures that the roller weight is neutralized and thus
has no effect on the load cell.

3. Mounting Please observe the relevant local and customary safety

and accident prevention regulations during mounting and
installation work.

3.1 Accessory kits for

mounting work E+L supply all necessary parts for the mounting of the load cell PD 2.
in the form of accessory kits. Please note that an accessory kit only
contains the parts for one load cell. The accessory kits consist of:

Accessory kits

1 self-aligning ball bearing x x x x x x x
1 locking ring / shaft x x x x x
2 locking rings / boring x x x x x x x
1 distance sleeve x x x
2 distance sleeves x
1 set collar x x
2 set collars x
1 rotary locking ring x x

The accessory kits differ according to:

- roller journal type (continuous or offset)
- roller bearings (inner or outer mounting)
- roller side (movable or fixed bearing side)
- axle or shaft diameter
Please refer to the two tables on the next page for the accessory kits
suitable for your system. The corresponding material references can
be found in the section on spare parts and accessories.

Locking ring for *The accessory kits for movable bearing sides contain lock-
boring to DIN 471
ing rings for the boring and shaft. The locking rings for the
Locking ring for boring must not mounted on the movable bearing side. It
shaft to DIN 472 must be possible to move the outer ring of the self-aligning
ball bearing on the movable bearing side.

3.2 Transport screws The load cell is secured by two long transport screws whenever it is
transported. These two screws secure the measuring ring on the load
cell interior and thus protect it against knocks during transportation.
The transport protection screws must be replaced by the
shorter cover screws prior to commissioning otherwise web
tension monitoring will not be possible. Please ensure that
the cover screws are tightened securely.
As an additional precaution we have listed the dimensions of the
transport screws (PD 21, 22, 25 = DIN 84, PD 23 = DIN 912) and the
Transport screws cover screws in the table below:

3.3 Load cell mounting Please ensure that no mechanical distortions arise between
the load cells and measuring roller. Mechanical distortions in-
fluence the operation of the load cells and, in extreme cases,
may cause damage!
During the installation bear in mind the measuring direction
of the load cells. Refer to the projects planning documents or
to the computation as described in chapter 2.5.

B page 7

If the mounting position is horizontal, the transport protection

Transport protection screws screws should point upwards (see figure at the top, left).
In case of load cell PD 23 make sure that the venting screws are
FR/K always at the lowest point. In other words, if the installation is hori-
zontal the socket must point sideways, see figure to the left. If the
installation is vertical the socket must point upwards.
 Clean the journals of the shaft of the measuring roller and check
the screw-on dimensions.
FR/K  Take just ONE of the load cells and change the position of the
flange covers so that when both load cells are installed the sock-
PD 2. mounting position ets and the transport protection screws of both load cells point into
the same direction (see top figure to the left).
For load cells PD 23 replace the seal very carefully.
Socket  Mount the load cells on the measuring roller using the set of ac-
cessories.
 Install the measuring roller with its load cells in the machine.
 For load cells PD 23 remove the plug of the lower vent screw.
In case you want to attach a plastic hose to the vent screw (4 x
1), use the hose nozzle which is in the plastic bag together with
the screw caps.

4. Installation When running electric cables make sure that their insulation
is not damaged and the cables correctly secured and protect-
ed. Protect signal and run apart from power lines.
In case it becomes necessary for space reasons to turn the right
angle plug of the connecting cable by 90° or 180° before inserting
it into the socket, the plug insert of the right angle plug may be
turned carefully. Make sure that the insulation is not damaged.
Under no circumstances should the socket on the load cell
be turned.

5. Maintenance Protect the load cells from coarse dirt and moisture.
The self-aligning ball bearings of the load cells do not need any lu-
brication, they are greased for life. E+L uses grease Optimol, type
Longtime.
Make sure that the shorter cover screws are used instead of the long
transport screws so that no dirt may penetrate the load cell.
In case of malfunction, the load cell must be returned to the fac-
tory for replacement. No parts can be replaced on-site.
