ACTIVITY 1
“ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION”

Environmental pollution is the presence of harmful components

(whether chemical, physical or biological) in the environment (natural
and artificial environment), which are detrimental to the living beings
that inhabit it, including human beings. Environmental pollution is
caused mainly by causes derived from human activity, such as the emission of
greenhouse gases into the atmosphere or the excessive exploitation of natural
resources.

1. What is Environmental pollution?

Environmental pollution is the presence of harmful components in the

environment.

2. What causes environmental pollution?

Environmental pollution is caused by causes derived from the human activity, such
as the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere or the excessive
exploitation of natural resources.

Four important types of pollution:

 Air pollution is the polutted air that we release into the atmosphere. It is the harmful air to
the health of human beings and the planet.

 Land pollution is the deposition of solid or liquid waste materials on land or underground in a

manner that can contaminate the soil and groundwater, threaten public health, and cause unsightly

conditions and nuisances.

 Water pollution is the release of substances into subsurface groundwater or into lakes,

streams, rivers, estuaries, and oceans to the point where the substances interfere

with beneficial use of the water or with the natural functioning of ecosystems.

 Noise pollution is the excessive sound that can have deleterious effects on human health, wildlife,

and environmental quality. Noise pollution is commonly generated inside many industrial facilities

but it also comes from highway, railway, and airplane traffic and from outdoor construction

activities.

3. Answer the questions:

a. Is water pollution the release of polluted air into the atmosphere? No, it isn’t

What is it?
Water pollution is the release of substances into subsurface groundwater.
b. Is land pollution the deposition of waste material on the land or underground?
Yes, it is
c. Is noise pollution the polluted air released to the air?
No, it isn’t
d. Is air pollution the excessive sound on the environment?
No, it isn’t
What is noise pollution?
Noise pollution is the excessive sound on the environment that can have negative effects on
human health, wildlife, and environmental quality .
e. What is air pollution
Air pollution is the polutted air that we release into the atmosphere.
