The following table shows the number of marriages, in thousands, during the last 7 years in Lebanon.
Year 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023
Rank of the Year: xi 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Number of marriages: yi
280 275 263 250 210 190 180
(thousands)
All the answers will be rounded to the nearest 10−3 .
1) Represent the scatterplot ( xi ; yi ) in a well-chosen orthogonal coordinate system.
2) Find the coordinates of the mean point G and place this point in the previous coordinate system.
3) Determine an equation of the regression line ( Dy / x ) of y in terms of x and draw this line in the same
coordinate system.
4) Calculate the linear correlation coefficient r . Interpret the result obtained.
5) Calculate the percentage decrease in the number of marriages in Lebanon from the year 2017 to 2023.
6) Suppose that this model remains valid until the year 2030.
a) Estimate the number of marriages in Lebanon in 2026.
b) From which year, the number of marriages will for the first time be less than 100 000 marriages.
7) In 2017, a couple is married. This couple bought a 120 m2 apartment in an area where the price of one
m2 is 1200$. This apartment loses 10 000$ of its price every year. Determine the price of the
apartment, in $, if this couple decides to sell this apartment in 2023 due to the economic crisis.

II- (5 points)
The functions f and g defined by f ( x )= ln ( − x + 10 ) and g ( x ) = ln x represent the functions of
demand and supply respectively, in thousands of toys produced, where x is the unit price of a toy, in
hundreds of thousands of LL, such that 2 < x < 10 .
Prices will be rounded to the nearest LL and quantities to the nearest toy if necessary.
1) Calculate the demand for a price of 350 000 LL.
2) Calculate the unit price corresponding to a supply of 2 000 toys.
3) Determine the equilibrium price of the market.
Calculate the equilibrium quantity as well as the revenue in this case.
−x
4) Show that the elasticity of demand E is expressed by E ( x ) = .
( x − 10 ) ln ( − x + 10 )
5) Calculate E ( 4 ) , is the demand elastic for the price of 400 000 LL? Interpret economically the result.

Part A
Let f be the function defined over [ 0 ; + ∞[ by f ( x ) = 2 x − 3 + e −2 x .
 
(
Denote by ( C ) the representative curve of f in an orthonormal coordinate system O ; i ; j . )
1) Determine lim f ( x ) and calculate f ( 0 ) .
x →  +∞

2) a) Show that the line ( d ) of equation =

y 2 x − 3 is an asymptote to ( C ) at +∞ .
b) Study, according to the values of x in [ 0 ; + ∞[ , the relative position of ( C ) and ( d ) .
3) Calculate f ′ ( x ) , then copy and complete the following table that represents the table of variations of
the function f :

x 0 +∞
f ′( x) +
f ( x)

4) The equation f ( x ) = 0 admits a unique solution α such that α ≈ 1.48 .

Trace ( C ) and ( d ) .

Part B
A factory manufactures bracelets.
The total cost of production, in millions of LL, is expressed as C ( x )= 3 − e −2 x where x is the number of
bracelets produced, expressed in hundreds, such that 1 < x < 5 .
1) Calculate the fixed costs of the factory.
2) Calculate the total cost of production of 150 bracelets. Deduct the average cost of a bracelet in this
case (give the answer to the nearest LL).
3) Each bracelet is sold at 25 000 LL of which 20% are offered for free and the remaining is sold.
a) Show that revenue is expressed by R ( x ) = 2 x .
b) Show that profit P is modeled by the function f of Part A.
c) Determine the break-even point of the factory.
d) Will the factory make a profit from the production of 160 bracelets? Justify.

Number of marriages in Thousands yi

1) 1

Rank of the year xi

2) x = 4 and y ≈ 235.429 so G ( 4 ; 235.429 ) + place G . 0.5

( D ) :=y
y/ x Bx + A
3) 0.75
B ≈ −18.679 and A ≈ 310.143 therefore ( D ) : y ≈ −18.679 x + 310.143 + figure.
x/ y

3
r ≈ −0.974 And −1 < r < − therefore the linear correlation between the rank of
4) 2 0.5
the year ( xi ) and the number of marriages ( yi ) is strong negative.
180 − 280
5) The percentage decrease in the number of marriages is:  ×1 00 ≈  35.714% . 0.75
280
In 2026, x = 10 therefore y ≈ −18.679(10) + 310.143 ≈ 123.353 ;
6) a) 0.75
So, the number of marriages in Lebanon in 2026 is 123 353 marriages.
y < 100 ; −18.679 x + 310.143 < 100 ; −18.679 x < 100 − 310.143 ;
−18.679 x < −210.143 ; x > 11.25 so x = 12 .
6) b) So the number of marriages will be less than 100,000 marriages for the first time in 0.75
the year 2028.
The initial price of the apartment is C =120 ×1200 =144 000$ ; Let S be its price in
2023;
C−S
The annual depreciation is 10 000$ so = 10 000 where n = 2023 − 2017 = 6 ,
n
144 000 − S
therefore = 10 000 ; 144 000 − S = 60 000 therefore
7) 6 1
S = 84 000 .
The apartment will be sold for 84 000$ in 2023.
Or the initial price of the apartment is C =120 ×1200 =144 000$ , in 6 years (between
2017 and 2023) there is a price loss of 6 ×10 000 = 60 000 $, so its price becomes
144 000 − 60 000 = 84 000$ in 2023.

350  000
= x = 3.5 ; f ( 3.5 ) = ln ( −3.5 + 10 ) ≈ 1.8718 ;
1) 100 000 0.75
So, the demand for a price of 350,000 LL is 1872 toys.
2000
2)
g= ( x ) = 2 ; ln x = 2 ; = x e= 2
7.389056 ;
0.75
1000
So, the unit price for an offer of 2000 toys is 738 906 LL.
f ( x ) = g ( x ) ; ln ( − x + 10 ) =ln x ; − x + 10 =x ; x = 5 ;
Then the equilibrium price of the market is 500 000 LL.
3) 1.5
f ( 5 ) ≈ 1.6094 ; So, the equilibrium quantity is 1 609 toys.
The revenue in this case is: 500 000 × 1 609 = 804 500 000 LL.
−1
f '( x) −x
4) E ( x) =
−x =− x − x + 10 = . 1
f ( x) ln ( − x + 10 ) ( x − 10 )  ln ( − x + 10 )
E (4) ≈ 0.372 ; As 0 < E (4) < 1 the demand is inelastic for the price of 400 000 LL.
5) When the unit price increases by 1% from the unit price 400 000 LL, the demand 1
decreases by 0.372%
