DIAMOND SPLICE JOINT

SPLICING INSTRUCTION :

PRELIMINARY PREPARATION :-

1. Select a suitable location on the Conveyor run to make the splice. The location should preferably be horizontal and protected from sun and rain.

2. Check that the take-up is in its minimum position.

3. Install the belt and bring the two ends – to the location selected for splicing . Ascertain that the belt to be joined is of the correct length i.e the belt plus the
splice length. Ensure that the belt is the right way-up All NORTHLAND belts are branded on the carrying side only. If the belt is already in operation, stop the belt with
the joint at this location.

4. Remove about six/seven idlers at this location.

5. Fit clamps to the belt beyond the area to be spliced, leaving the ends free with sufficient spare length to enable them to be filled together and cured.
6. Tension the belt by anchoring one clamp to the Conveyor Structure and pull the other clamp with a pull lift or chain block.
7. Anchor the belt in the position by lashing the other clamp to the idlers or to the conveyor structure.
8. Connect the vulcaniser and adjust the thermostat to a temperature of140 Deg.c., this will be reached in approximately 1 ½ hrs.

PREPARATION OF BELT FOR SPLICING

1. Cut the belt ends square using a steel tape, mark on carrying side of the belt end, two points half way across the belt width, one at the end of the belt and other
about 3 meters away in to the belt from the end.
2. Joint these two points with a wax crayon. This line is the center line of the belt.
3. Measure the Splice Length L plus 25 along the center line of the belt from the end and draw a reference line AB in the Tailor’s L square across the belt at right
angle to the belt center line.
The splice length L may be obtained from the following formula :-

L = W + (n-1) x S
L = Splice length in mm
W = Belt width in mm
n = No. of plies
S = Step length in mm
Example :

Cutting steps -

a) Draw CO & C’O from O at 45 deg. b) Join CO & C’O

c) Cut the top cover by knife taking cone that the ply is not damaged.
d) Remove the entire top cover from the cut line OC & OC’
e) Mark CD & C’D’ 25mm
f) Draw line from D & D’ parallel to OC & OC’ upto center line.
g) Cut the first ply from D & D’ upto the center line without damaging the underneath plies. Remove the 1st ply by strip- cutting alongwith the entire
splice length.
h) Mark DE & D’E’ 300mm and cut the 2nd ply parallel to OC & OC’ upto the center line of the belt. Remove the 2nd ply as done earlier.
i) Follow the same process for 3rd ply.
j) At the center line mark 1050mm from the 3rd ply position and join to F & F’ as per sketch. Cut FO’ & F’O’ and remove the 4th ply.
k) Follow the same process for 5th and 6th ply. l) Remove HK & H’K’ as shown in the sketch.
m) Buff the skim rubber from the plies without damaging the fabric. n) Clean the surface by solvent oil/petrol
o) Apply rubber solution and dry property
p) Apply gum sheet rubber without air entrapment
q) Prepare the other end of the belt from the bottom side as per the same sketch
r) Follow the process m -> p.
s) Lay the other end on the 1st end by super imposition. Press hard by hand roller. Fill the 25mm V-cut area by rubber cover compound and press hard by
hand roller.

VULCANISING THE SPLICE

1. Place the curing press in position.

Position the splice in the press.

2. Place mould irons, which should be 0.5/1.0 less in thickness than the total thickness of the belt. Place the joiner’s clamp at the two side of the press to make
sure that the mould irons are in contact of the belt edge sufficiently.

MOULD SIZE TEMP. CURE – TIME
Mm ºC Min

Upto 12mm 144 + 2 30’

12.1 - 15 144 + 2 40’
15.1 – 20 144 + 2 50’
20.1 – 25 144 + 2 65’
5. Before opening the press, cool the press to 90ºC for M-24/FR Grade and
70ºC for HR Grade. Cure the next change by 35mm over-laping the previous charge. Follow the same process till the entire splice length is cured.

6. After curing, remove the press, re-install the idlers and release the belt after 1 hour.
