ACTIVITY 1

Differentiate the following mathematical concepts.

1. Discrete from Continuous

The concept of discrete and continuous refers to the differentiation between distinct individual entities and
a smooth, uninterrupted flow of values or variables. In mathematics, discrete elements are isolated and
separate from each other, with no values in between, while continuous elements form a connected
sequence where values can be infinitely subdivided. For instance, a discrete variable can be represented
by whole numbers like counting the number of books on a shelf, while a continuous variable can be
measured by fractions or decimals, such as the weight of an object. Understanding the distinction between
discrete and continuous is fundamental in various fields like mathematics, computer science, and statistics
as it helps in accurately representing, analyzing, and solving problems in these domains.

2. Z-test from T-test

The mathematical concepts of the z-test and t-test are two important tools used in statistical analysis to
make informed decisions about data. The key difference between the two lies in the circumstances in
which they are employed. Specifically, the z-test is suitable when the sample size is large and the
population standard deviation is known, while the t-test is used when the sample size is small or the
population standard deviation is unknown and must be estimated from the sample data. Essentially, the z-
test assumes full knowledge of the population parameters, whereas the t-test is more flexible and can
handle situations where assumptions about the population are less certain.

3. Qualitative from Quantitative Data

The difference between the mathematical concept of quantitative and qualitative is that Quantitative data
refers to numerical values that can be measured and analyzed using mathematical techniques. It provides
precise and objective information, often allowing for statistical analysis and making it suitable for
conducting quantitative research. On the other hand, qualitative data involves non-numerical information,
such as descriptions and explanations. It offers a more subjective perspective and allows for a deeper
understanding of the context and meaning behind the mathematical concepts.

4. Mean from Median

In the realm of mathematics, the concepts of mean and median serve as crucial statistical measures that
provide insights into a set of data. Specifically, the mean represents the average value of a dataset, obtained
by summing up all the numbers and dividing by the total count. It is often used when the dataset is
symmetrically distributed. On the other hand, the median is the middle value of a dataset when arranged
in ascending or descending order. Unlike the mean, the median is more resilient to extreme values, making
it an excellent choice when dealing with skewed distributions.

5. Histogram from Bar Graph

Histograms and bar graphs are both graphical representations used to display data, but they differ in their
mathematical concepts. A histogram is used to represent the distribution of a continuous variable through
vertical bars, where the height of each bar corresponds to the frequency or relative frequency of that range.
On the other hand, a bar graph is used to compare discrete categories by the height of rectangular bars,
usually with labelled axes representing the categories and their corresponding values. While histograms
provide a visual representation of continuous data, bar graphs are better suited for comparing discrete
values.
