1. Define the term bilingual education. Describe some of the various forms that bilingual education
programs may take.

ANS:
Bilingual education is the education of English-language learners (ELLs) by teaching them at least
part of the time in their native language. One approach is immersion, in which ELLs are placed into
English-only classes without any native-language communication. Another approach is for the
student to spend part of her or his time being taught in the native language, supplemented by ESL
classes to help in learning English. Two-way or dual-language programs are taught in more than
one language, so that both language-minority and native English-speaking students become fluent
in both languages.

2. Imagine that you have completed some professional training on "Specially Designed Academic
Instruction in English." Your principal requests that you share tips for teaching with this method at
a presentation to other faculty. List six suggestions that you can provide.

3. Define the term sexual orientation and describe its typical categories. Why are LGBT students often

ANS:
Sexual orientation is an enduring emotional, romantic, sexual, or affectional attraction that a
person feels toward people of one or both sexes. Heterosexual means orientation toward members
of the opposite sex; homosexual means orientation toward members of the same sex. Bisexual
describes orientation toward both sexes, and transgender means having characteristics of the
opposite sex. LGBT students are the invisible minority because fear often prevents these students
from revealing their sexual identities. The majority of LGBT students do not feel safe at school.

4. Define the term dropout rate. What is the dropout rate in the United States? What are five
strategies for reducing the dropout rate?

ANS:
The dropout rate is the percentage of students who fail to complete high school or earn an
equivalency degree. In the United States, the dropout rate hovers around 10 percent. Student
response to the last portion should expand on the following suggestions: 1) make it harder for
students to drop out of school by providing sustaining environments in school; 2) address the
underlying causes of dropping out; 3) address the needs of those groups at highest risk; 4)
strengthen school readiness; and 5) strengthen the skills and understanding of adults who affect
teens' motivation and ability to stay in school.

Multicultural education is that which is designed to create equal opportunities for students from
diverse racial, ethnic, social class, and cultural groups. Teachers in these settings are encouraged to
develop culturally relevant pedagogy, which consists of teaching practices that place the culture of
the learner at the center of instruction. Four attributes important to culturally relevant pedagogy:
1) Teachers use cultural referents to develop students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes. 2) Teachers
honor students' life stories and belief systems, finding ways to incorporate them into the learning
context. 3) Teachers create classroom community by granting voice and legitimacy to students'
experiences. 4) Teachers encourage all students to achieve in academics by acknowledging their
personal and cultural identities.

6. Using demographic information presented in your text, describe the current student landscape in
public schools in the United States. Is this landscape similar to or different from that which
prevailed when you were in school? Explain.

7. Explain what is meant by the term student at risk. What are some of the social factors that put

ANS:
Students at risk are those who are in danger of not completing school or not acquiring the
education they need to be successful citizens. They may also be considered as not having the
potential to participate in society in ways that are meaningful and purposeful for themselves and
others. The greatest risk factors are substance abuse, child abuse, poverty, homelessness, hunger,
depression, and teen pregnancy. The family risk index is a tool used to identify at-risk children. A
high-risk child is one who lives in a family with four or more of the following risk factors: 1) child
not living with two parents; 2) household head is a high school dropout; 3) family income below
poverty line; 4) children living with parent(s) who is(are) underemployed; 5) family is receiving
welfare benefits; 6) child does not have health insurance.

8. How would you define “learning style”? Describe your own learning style. What impact does your
learning style have on your future teaching style?

ANS:

When we think of learning as the taking in or internalizing of new material to make it our own, then
learning style refers to the particular way you take in a new idea, event, or concept. Responses will
vary, however, and should indicate auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or a combination of two or more.
