scripts. D espite the a m o u n t o ؛v ariation in the w ritten language, you can ease y o u rse l ؛into
w ritin g A ram aic w ith o u t m u ch tro u b le for tw o reasons. First, every form ٥ ؛w ritte n A ram aic
u ltim ately d erives ؛rom th e sam e early script, so all A ram aic scripts sh a re m an y com m on
features. Second, w e can sim p li؛y the situ a tio n by classi؛y ing the A ram aic scripts into three basic
types: th e early script, th e sq u a re scrip t a n d the cu rsive script.
This w orkbook eases you in to the com plexities of w ritin g A ram aic in a step -b y -step ؛ashion.
O v er th e course of th is book, you will learn to w rite th e basic versio n s of th e sq u a re scrip t and
the cu rsive script. You w ill a p p ro a c h these tw o scripts in m an ag eab le chunks. For starters, you
will learn to w rite in d iv id u a l letters. T hen, you w ill learn to m odify those letters an d b u ild
syllables o u t of them . Finally, you will p u t syllables to g eth e r in w o rd s, p h rases, a n d sim ple
sentences.
A fter learn in g th e basic sq u a re a n d cu rsiv e scripts, you w ill have th e o p p o rtu n ity to s tu d y
an d practice th e early A ram aic script. You w ill also m eet historical v ersions of the scripts. This

A ram aic sp eak ers b o rro w e d th eir a lp h a b e t from th e P hoenicians, th em selves fellow Sem itic
speakers. E xtant Early Aram aic sto n e in scrip tio n s testify to th e extensive u se of this A ram aic
a lp h a b e t m o re th an 3000 y ears ago. T he lan g u a g e s p re a d to M eso p o tam ia a t a n early d ate, an d a
h ighly s ta n d a rd iz e d Im perial Aram aic becam e th e lan g u ag e of th e A chaem enid o r Persian
E m pire m ore th an 2500 y ears ago.
