Level 4 Applied Aural Skills - Written Examination

Instructions for candidates

• Please download or print out a copy of this exam paper. If you can’t print the paper out you
can write out the questions on manuscript paper.
• The sound files to accompany this examination will be released one hour before the
examination is due to start.
• You will have 60 minutes to complete this paper. You can play each musical extract as often as
you want to.
• The sound files will be withdrawn from Learn after 60 minutes (at the end of the examination).
• After the examination you need to upload a copy of your completed paper or a photograph of
your aural paper to Learn. You must upload your answers within 15 minutes unless you have a
LAg, in which case you must upload your paper within 30 minutes of the end of the
examination.
• If for any reason you are unable to upload your answers to Learn, you must send a copy of your
answers to miranda.francis@rcm.ac.uk

5. TONAL MELODY (32 marks)


Write down this melody in the key of D Major. Each playing will begin with the tonic chord of D
Major, followed by the first note, D. This will be followed by a four crotchet count-in, and then the
melody. We recommend that you listen to this extract FOUR or FIVE times.

Write down this melody starting on the given note, C. The rhythm of the melody is given for you.
Each playing will begin with the given note, C, followed by a four crotchet count-in, and then the
melody. We recommend that you listen to this extract FOUR or FIVE times.

7a. CHORDS (8 marks)


Draw a circle around the chord played. We recommend that you listen to each chord TWICE.

7b. CHORD PROGRESSION (8 marks)


Using Roman numerals, identify the chords in this progression in the key of G Major, and write down
the bass line. In each playing you will hear the tonic chord and the tonic note - G - followed by a two
minim count-in before the progression. The rhythm of the bass is given below. We recommend that
you listen to this extract FOUR or FIVE times.

8. AURAL ANALYSIS (24 marks)

You will hear an extract from a work for piano. We recommend that you listen to this extract
THREE or FOUR times.

The key is D minor.
