Properties of angles

Angles on a straight line and angles at a point

Lesson Objective: At the end of the lesson, you should know how to
(1) Identify diagrams of complementary angles
(2) Identify diagrams of angles at a point
(3) Identify diagrams of angles on a straight line
(4) Able to solve for unknow angles using properties of angles

Steps to Success:
(1) Choose whether diagram is angle at a point or angle on a straight line
(2) If complementary angles
Unknown angle = 90 – (given angles)
(3) If angle at a point, use formula
UNKNOWN angle = 360 – (given angles)
(4) If angle on a straight line, use formula
UNKNOWN angle = 180 – (given angles)
(5) If two straight lines are crossing each other, use formula
UNKNOWN angle = opposite angle (properties of vertically opposite angle)
(6) Use algebra strategies to solve and get final answer.

RECOGNISE

Angles equal to 180 ° is a straight angles (half

of circle).

Angles equal to 360 ° is a full circle.

Angles on a straight line Angles at a point Vertically opposite angles

Two straight lines crossing

each other.
Opposite angles are equal
x° + y° + z° = 180° a° + b° + c° = 360° p = ∠q
r = ∠s

Complementary angles

∠ABD + ∠DBC = 90º
