BACKGROUND

It has been observed that there is massive deforestation around Chibi High School.The observation
shows that it needs serious attention to restore the degraded land.

Causes of deforestation
Veld fires

heat from the fire will cause the leaves to wilt because there will too much water loss from the tree

Road construction

When road construction is being done they start by clearing of which clearing involves the cutting down
of trees which is deforestation

Timber for construction

Near by settlers tend to cut down trees for timber which is a way to deforestation

Source of fuel

Wood is used as a fuel especially in rural areas, nearby settlers tend cut down trees for wood leading to
deforestation

land for agriculture

Over population around the school is leading to deforestation because trees are cut down to produce
space

Effects of deforestation

destroyed habitat for wildlife

when the trees are cut down,the shelter for other living organisms is destroyed

Global warming

When trees are cut down there will be no carbon sinks because trees are used as carbon sinks. Global
warming occures due to increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

loss of fuel

For those who use firewood the will be shortage of fuel around the area which suffering from
deforestation

Low rainfall

There is low rainfall in the area because of reduction of evapotranspiration

The Ecobalance is destroyed

The ecobalance is destroyed because trees are the producers in the ecobalance

Mitigatory measures

Afforestation

people should replant trees to replace those which are cut

Environmental laws

The should be use of encouragement laws so to reduce the number of trees that are being cut . A
person should pay a fine or serve a severe punishment to teach others a lesson by doing that less tress
will be conserved

National tree planting day

people should observe tree planting day to replace trees which have been cut off. in Zimbabwe it is
observe on every first Saturday of December

Environmental education

The Environmental Management Agency should often visit people around Chibi High School and advice
them on conserving trees

Work with indigenous groups to stop deforestation

Another solution to deforestation is to impower indigenous and work with them. This is important
since forests have been home to indigenous people for over tens of thousands of years ever since the
dawn of human society . Empowering them to defend their traditional homelands

Practice eco forestry

Eco forestry is a restorative method of forest management which is not based on economic productivity.
In this practice certain trees are selectively harvested while causing minimal damage to the rest of the
forest

Topic: Causes , Effects and solutions to Deforestation

People are cutting trees repeatedly because of different reasons. Some of the reasons for cutting trees
are as follows for firewood,to create space for land used for farming, for timber , to clear for road
construction and other reasons. Deforestation is not only caused by humans but it can be caused by
weather conditions such as cyclones and drought maybe and other weather conditions

Deforestation affect environment largely . It destroys shelter for wildlife , it can even cause global
warming because trees are used as carbon sink so the carbon dioxide will go into the atmosphere and
cause global warming and there will be less fuel to those who use wood as their source of fuel

Deforestation can be controlled by use of environmental laws, educating people on effects of

deforestation and observing the tree planting day
