Where in Wales is Chepstow?
The town of Chepstow is located
beside the tidal river Wye, 45
kilometers from the Welsh capital,
Cardiff. Chepstow is the easternmost
settlement in Wales, adjoining the
border with Gloucestershire, England.
A little bit of history
Chepstow is best known for its castle that bears the same
name as its city, Chepstow Castle. It is the oldest stone castle
still standing in Britain, being comissioned by William the
Conqueror. Building work started in 1067, one year after the
Battle of Hastings. Overlooking the Wye, this castle’s position
was highly strategic.
More about the castle…
Like any 900 year old castle, it echoes with the ghosts of its past. Visitors
and staff working at the castle have reported plenty paranormal activities:
Inside the gift-shop that was built next to the former kitchens, visitors have
reported smelling the unmistakable scent of onions being cooked; There was
also an incident involving an ornate chess set that was for sale in the shop;
Despite it being locked inside a glass display cabinet, chess pieces moved to
different squares on their own over the night.
The ruins of Tintern Abbey
Tintern Abbey sits less than 6 miles from the center of Chepstow, on the banks of the
River Wye. Nearly 500 years have passed since its tragic fall from grace. It was
founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks, who were happy to make do with timber
buildings at first. In 1269 they began to build a new abbey church and didn’t stop until
they’d created one of the masterpieces of British Gothic architecture.
