Difference between formal
and informal communication

March 27, 2015 by Surbhi S[21]

So meone correctly said, "The very attempt

to, not to speak, speaks
volumes." Communication plays a
crucial role in our lives, as
people exchange their ideas,
information, feelings and
opinions through

communicating. Formal

Communication happens through prede
fin ed communication channels throughout
the organization. On the contrary, the informal flows in all directions,

that is, it moves freely in the organization Communication can be verbal, spoken or written,

or non-verbal, that is, using sign language, body movements, facial
expressions, gestures, eye contact or even with tone of voice.

In an organization, there are two channels of communication : formal communication and

informal communication. People often confuse between these two channels, so here we present
this article that explains the difference between formal and informal communication network.

 Text adapted from: https://keydifferences.com/difference-
between-formal-and-informal- communication.html used by

Definition of Formal Communication: communication in which
the flow of information  is already defined. Communication
follows a hierarchical chain of command established by the
organization. This type of communication is used  exclusively in
the workplace, and employees follow it while performing
their tasks. Some examplesare: requests, commands, orders,
reports, etc.
There are four types of formal communication:
·         Ascending or bottom-up: Information goes from subordinate authority to
superior.
·         Down or top down: He goes from superior to subordinate.
·         Horizontal or Lateral: Communication
between two employees from different
departments working at the same level.
·         Crosswise or Diagonal: Communication between
employees from two different departments
working at different levels.

Definition of informal communication: Communication does not

follow any predefined channel for the transmission of
information. This type of communication moves freely in all
directions, and it is very fast and fast. This type of
communication is very natural as people interact  with each other
about their professional life, personal life and other
matters. Some examples are: Sharing feelings, casual
discussion, gossip, etc.
There are four types of informal communication:
·         Single Strand Chain: Communication in which one
person says something to another, who again says
something to another person and the process
continues.
·         Cluster chain: Communication in which a person says
something to some of their most trusted people, and
then tells their trusted friends and the communication
continues.
·         Chain of probability: Communication occurs when a
person randomly chooses some people to convey
information that is of little interest but not important.
·         Gossip chain: Communication begins when one
person says something to a group of people, and then
they relay the information to a few more people and in
this way the information is transmitted to everyone.

Key differences

1. Formal communication is also known as official
communication. Informal communication is also
known by the name of vine.
2. In formal communication, information should follow a
chain of command. Conversely, informal
communication moves freely in any direction.
3. In formal communication, total secrecy
is maintained, but in the case of informal
communication, maintaining secrecy is a very
difficult task.
4. Formal communication is written, while informal communication is oral.
5. Formal communication is time-consuming unlike informal
communication, which is quick and fast.

6. Formal communication is more reliable than informal communication.

7. Formal communication is designed by the
organization. Informal communication starts with
itself because of the "human to talk" impulse.
8. In formal communication, documentary evidence
is always available. Supporting documents for
informal communication are not available.

According to the text:
-          Answer your instructor's comprehension questions and share your answers.

paragraph, saying who your team members are. Use the
following text as a template.
3Hello, My name is Kevin Galindo. I am a
graphic designer at Draw your Dreams
Corporation. These are my team
members. To my right, Blanca and Jeisson,
are the writers of the new products in
the production department. To my left,

are the sales representatives of the
