PREFACE.
In the two Works — I have now completed four volumes containing altogether upward*
of four hundred plates — developing, in the Foliated Ornament and Coloured Decoration,
first,
and more particularly the constructive and practical " Details of Gothic Architec
in the last,
-
ture." The manner in which they have been received by the Profession, and the many
very
flattering encomiums which have been passed upon them during
the ten years that I have now
been engaged upon them, assures me that I have not been labouring altogeth
er in vain, and
that they will not fail to become a welcome addition to the library of the Architect.
Upon issuing the Prospectus of " The Details," I stated that it was not my intention to
interfere with the "Analysis of Gothic Architecture,"
by Messrs. Brandon, but that I should
endeavour to more fully elucidate such features as were only paitially develop
ed by them.
To this I have adhered, and rather than interfering, it will be found that one work will be a
great assistance to the other, and the possessor of one will find it to his advantage to procure
the other.
I have, however, to apologise to my Subscribers for the slow and irregular manner that
the latter portion of the present "Work has been published, but other more pressing
professional engagements have so fully occupied my time of late, that I have been reluctantly
prevented from issuing the numbers with that regularity that I have always hitherto done.
Drawings of parts of St. Mary's Church, Beverley, as well as some others. To Mr. Charles
Hansom, of Clifton, and Mr. A. M. Dunn, for his Drawings of the Tower, at Waterleigh ;
Cross, at Dund ry, &c. To Mr. T. .J. Willson, for the beautiful font at GreeUell. and Pulpit
at Tupholme. To the Rev. H. T. Ellacombe, for the loan of Messrs. Hirst & Gabriel's
Drawings of the Sedilia, at Bitton. To Mr. J. D. Wyatt, for many interesting Drawings and
Sketches, and to several other friends who have kindly lent me various Drawings and Sketches,
to all of whom I again tender my sincere thanks for their assistance.

The whole of the capitals and the small detached shafts are of polished Purbeck marble.
The springing of the aisle groining from the intermediate piers is very peculiar, the com-

overhanging the abacus of the capitals.
The capitals and bases of the vaulting shafts are of polished Purbeck marble.

PLATE.
This pulpit is of the same date as the church, and from the bed* of the stone work agreeing with
those in the pier was evidently built up with it. It is not now used as a pulpit, but is fitted up as a
pew with modern door, crimson curtains, fcc. The cusping of the centre arch has been probably
cut away.
