DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT-1
1. Find the efficiency of the lap joint shown in figure. Both plates are of thickness 20mm. Given M20 bolts
of grade 4.6 & Fe410 plates are used.

2. Two flats (Fe 410 Grade Steel), each 210 mm × 8 mm, are to be jointed using 20 mm diameter, 4.6
grade bolts, to form a lap joint. The joint is supposed to transfer a factored load of 250 kN. Design the
joint and determine suitable pitch for the bolts.
3. A single-bolted double-cover butt joint is used to connect two plates of grade Fe410 which are 8 mm
thick. Assuming 16 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 and cover plates to be 6 mm thick, calculate the
strength and efficiency of the joint, if 4 bolts are provided in the bolt line at a pitch of 45 mm as shown
in Figure (a). Also, determine the efficiency of the joint if two lines of bolts with two bolts in each line
have been arranged to result in a double-bolted double-cover butt joint (figure b).

4. A tie member in a truss girder is 250 mm × 14 mm in size. It is welded to a 10-mm thick gusset plate by
a fillet weld. The overlap of the member is 300 mm and the weld size is 6 mm. Determine the design
strength of the joint, if the welding is done as shown in Figure. What is the increase in strength of the
joint, if welding is done all around. Assume shop welding and Fe410 grade steel.

5. A circular plate, 150 mm in diameter is welded to another plate by means of 6 mm fillet weld as shown
in Figure. Calculate the ultimate twisting moment that can be resisted by the weld use steel of grade Fe
410 and shop welding.
6. A tie member of a truss consists of double angle section, each 80 mm × 80 mm × 8 mm welded on the
opposite side of a 12 mm thick gusset plate. Design a fillet weld for making the connection in the
workshop. The factored tensile force in the member is 300 kN. Assume Fe410 grade steel.
7. An ISLC 300 @ 324.7 N/m (Fe 410 grade of steel) is to carry a factored tensile force of 900 kN. The
channel section is to be welded at the site to a gusset plate 12 mm thick. Design a fillet weld, if the
overlap is limited to 350 mm.
8. A single unequal angle ISA 9060, 6mm is connected to a 10mm gusset plates at the ends with 5 nos. of
16mm bolts to transfer tension. Determine the design tensile strength of the angle if the gusset is
connected to 90mm leg. Assume yield stress and ultimate stress of angle be 250 N/mm 2 and 410
N/mm2 respectively.

9. A tension member 0.95 m long is to resist a service dead load of 20 kN and a service live load of 60 kN.
Design a rectangular bar of standard structural steel of grade Fe 410. Assume that the member is
connected by one line of 16 mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6.
10. Design a bridge truss diagonal subjected to a factored tensile load of 300 kN. The length of the diagonal
is 3.0 m. The tension member is connected to a gusset plate 16 mm thick with one line of 20 mm
diameter bolt of grade 8.8. Assume Fe410 grade steel.
