DESIGN OF STEEL, TIMBER AND MASONRY STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT-2
1. Calculate the design compressive load for a stanchion made up of ISHB 350 @ 710.2 N/m, 3.5 m
high. The column is restrained in direction and position at both the ends. It is to be used as an
uncased column in a single-storey building. Use steel of grade Fe 410.
2. Calculate the design compressive load which the member shown in Figure can support, if the
member is of 5.5 m effective length. Use steel of grade Fe 410.

3. Design a stanchion 3.5 m long, in a building, subjected to a factored load of 550 kN. Both the ends
of the stanchion are effectively restrained in direction and position. Use steel of grade Fe 410.
4. Design a built-up column 10 m long to carry factored axial load of 1080 kN. The column is restrained
in position but not in direction at both the ends. Provide single lacing system with bolted
connections. Assume steel of grade Fe 410 and bolts of grade 4.6.
5. Design a built-up column 9 m long to carry a factored axial compressive load of 1100 kN. The
column is restrained in position but not in direction at both the ends. Design the column with
connecting system as battens with bolted connections. Use two channel sections back-to-back. Use
steel of grade Fe 410.
6. Design a slab base for a column ISHB 350 @ 710.2 N/m subjected to an factored axial compressive
load of 1500 kN if the load is transferred to the base plate by direct bearing of column flanges.
7. Determine the design bending strength of ISLB 350 @ 486 N/m considering the beam to be laterally
supported. The design shear force V is less than the design shear strength. The unsupported length
of the beam is 3.0 m. Assume steel of grade Fe 410.
8. A simply supported steel joist of 4.0 m effective span is laterally supported throughout. It carries a
total uniformly distributed load of 40 kN (inclusive of self weight). Design an appropriate section
using steel of grade Fe 410.
9. Design a laterally supported beam of effective span 6 m for the following data.
Grade of steel: Fe 410
Maximum bending moment: M = 150 kNm
Maximum shear force: V = 210 kN
Check for deflection is not required.
10. A timber column is 200mm x 200mm in section having an unsupported length of 3.5 meters.
Assuming the column to be of Sal wood, find the safe axial load. [Ans: 381.2 kN]
11. Design a solid wood column carrying an axial load of 450 kN and having effective length of 3
meters. The column material is Deodar and it is to be situated in outside location.
12. A timber column supports an axial load of 800kN. The effective length of the column is 3m. Taking
the column to be of Sal wood, design the column as a built-up section.
13. A timber beam is freely supported on supports 6m apart. It carries a uniformly distributed load of
12 kN/m and a concentrated load of 9 kN as 2.5m from the left support. If the stress in timber is not
to exceed 8 N/mm2, design a suitable section making the depth twice the width.
14. Design an interior cross wall for a two storied building to carry 100mm thick RC slab with 3m storey
height. The wall is continuous and stiffened by cross wall of 100mm thickness and length of wall
being 3.6m. The wall supports load from 2.65m wide slab. Loading on slab is given as below:
Live load on floor slab: 2 kN/m2
Live load on roof slab: 1.5 kN/m2
Floor finish: 0.2 kN/m2
Roof finish: 1.96 kN/m2
Assume compressive strength of brick as 5 N/mm2 and mortar type M2.
Adopt size of masonry unit as 200x100x90.

[Hint: Assume Effective length of wall as 0.8L]
