BRICS Law Journal Authors’ Guidelines

Please follow these Guidelines when preparing your manuscript.

Length Articles should not be fewer than 7,000 words and should not exceed 10,000 words
(including footnotes). The BRICS Law Journal will accept articles exceeding 10,000 words
only in exceptional cases. Book reviews and manuscripts of an informational nature may be
about 5,000 words in length.

Formatting Times New Roman: 12-point for text and 10-point for footnotes; alignment for
text and footnotes: justified; line spacing: one and one-half for text, single for footnotes.
Please do not use automatic numbering, automatic bullets, macros or hyperlinks.

Spelling British English and U.S. English spelling conventions are equally acceptable.

Structure Articles may contain Title, Abstract, Keywords, Abbreviations, Table of Contents,
Acknowledgements, References and Information about the author (current position, postal
address, e-mail address).

Title page Title of the article, author’s full name, author’s affiliation, abstract, keywords, and
table of contents. These elements and their styles are shown in the Template.

Abstract This is a summary of the content of the article. It should contain 150 to 250 words.

Keywords List four to eight words and/or terms that relate to the main topic of the article.

Table of Contents The TOC consists of the headings that appear in the body of the text. It
begins with the heading Introduction and ends with the heading Conclusion. The other
headings use the decimal numbering system.

Headings The headings in the body of the text are the same as the headings in the Table of
Contents, as shown in the Template.

Acknowledgements This is an optional heading. It may be placed between the Conclusion


and the References headings.

References Please use the styles in the examples provided in the Template.

Information about the author Please use the style of the example provided in the Template.

In-sentence lists For lists that appear in sentences, please write (a), (b), (c), (d), etc.

Displayed lists Bullet points or numbering may be used for displayed lists, but please do not
use MS Word’s automatic feature.

Quotation marks Please use double quotation marks to enclose quotations and extracts. For
all other purposes, please use single quotation marks.

Displayed quotations If a quotation contains more than sixty words, please set the quotation
in block form, indented, and indent the first line one additional time; separate the displayed

quotation from the rest of the text by adding one extra line space above and one extra line
space below the displayed quotation.

Tables and Figures Please use the styles shown in the Template.

Numbers Please use words for numbers less than 100; use the en-dash to separate digits/years
in a range (14–18; 2015–2021); use commas to separate thousands (2,500); use periods (full
stops) to separate decimals (€179.33; 65.33%).

Dates Please use the form 1 January 2022 (day month year). However, please keep the
original form of dates as they appear in quotations, extracts, and citations.

Italics Please use italics for foreign words, and for emphasis.

Footnotes Examples of footnote cues (the superscript numbers inserted in the text) and the
corresponding citations in footnotes for a quotation and a displayed quotation appear in the
Template. For the citations in footnotes, please use the styles of the examples provided in the
Template. If you are uncertain about which style is correct for a particular citation, please
highlight that particular citation in yellow.
