1A  Guess who!

1 Work in groups. Look at the photos of the people. Choose one of them, but don’t tell anyone in your group.
Describe the person in your photo. Use the adjectives and phrases in the box below to help you. You can
use affirmative or negative sentences. Don’t make it too easy! The first student in your group to guess
which photo you are describing correctly wins one point. Continue to take turns choosing a photo and
describing it.

1A Teacher’s notes  Guess who!
Activity: Describing photos; dominoes Key:
Language point: Adjectives to describe appearance; 2 blonde-haired
look / look like / look as if (Unit 1, Sections A and C) blue-eyed
Time: 15–20 minutes sun-tanned
long-haired
Materials: One handout and a pair of scissors for
pale-skinned
each group.
green-eyed
Procedure: broad-shouldered
• Divide the class into small groups of three or four straight-haired
students. middle-aged
• Give each group a handout. short-sighted
• PART 1: Tell the students to take turns to choose one dark-haired
photo secretly and then describe it to their group. The dark-skinned
first person who guesses the correct photo gets one
point. The group should keep score and continue to
take turns until they reach the time limit. Demonstrate
with one group, if necessary.
• Give a time limit and start the activity.
• While the students are doing the activity, walk around
and listen for any problems with grammar, vocabulary
or pronunciation. Make a note of these and give
feedback to the class after they have finished the
activity.
• PART 2: Next, tell the students that they are going to
play dominoes with compound adjectives. Ask each
group to cut out their dominoes, taking care with the
scissors.
• Each group should mix the dominoes and divide
them between the students.
• The first student puts the first domino (face up) on the
table. Then the next student puts a domino next to it
to make a compound adjective. If they don’t have the
correct domino to do this, they must ‘pass’ and miss
their turn. Then the next student tries to put a correct
domino next to one of the dominoes on the table.
Students continue to take turns. The winner is the first
student to place all their dominoes correctly on the
table.
• OPTION: When the dominoes game is finished, tell the
students to write a detailed description of one of the
people in the photos from Part 1, using as many of the
compound adjectives as possible.
