1. 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 2 = 0. Find the new equation whose roots are
(𝛼 − 2) and (𝛽 − 2). (4 marks)

2. Find the solutions of the equation 𝑥 2 = 4𝑥 − 1 giving your answers correct to 3

significant figures.

3. State the nature of the roots of the following equations:

a. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 3 = 0
b. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 = 0
c. 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 5 = 0

4. Given that the equation 4𝑥 2 + 𝑝𝑥 + 9 = 0 has roots which are (i) real and equal, (ii) real
but differ by 4, find in each case the possible values of 𝑝.
