CE 433 REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN Fall 2007 Problem Set No. 6 Integrated Beam Design Due October 15 The simply-supported beam shown below spans between two masonry walls with a wall centerline- to-centerline spacing of 25 ft. The beam is to carry a superimposed distributed dead load of 1.0 kips/ft, a distributed live load of 1.0 kips/ft, and a concentrated live load of 42 kips applied at the midspan of the beam. All loads are service loads and do not include the selfweight of the beam. For architectural reasons, the beam will have dimensions of h= 32 in. and b=20 in. A complete design of the beam is to be made using f, = 4000 psi and fy = 60,000 psi. A clear cover of 1.5 in. is required 1 Determine the required flexural reinforcement for the beam. Provide the steel using No. 8 bars in two layers, Remember to consider the beam self-weight. a) Cutoff 25% of the reinforcement where permitted. Include calculations of the exact cutoff location, b) Check to be sure that adequate embedded length is provided for the continued and discontinued bars. ©) Check special requirements at the support where the moment is zero. 4) Ifrequired, specify special reinforcing details in the vicinity of the rebar cutoffs. Assume that No. 4 stirrups will be used. Design the shear reinforcement for the beam using No. 4 stirrups. Detail the shear reinforcement using open stirrups with 135° hooks, 3. Make a sketch of the beam summarizing all design details.
