Context and Rationale

The use of computer networks is widely used today. Schools and individuals use

computer networks in their daily lives. Many people use computer networks for many

things, namely browsing, studying, chatting, social media, e-commerce, file transfer,

sharing devices, etc.. The digital revolution has profoundly affected daily living, evident

in the ubiquity of mobile devices and the seamless integration of technology into

common offices such as schools, business, entertainment and etc..

Integrating technology into teaching and learning is not a new challenge for many

schools. Administrators and faculty have grappled with how to effectively use technical

innovations such as video and audio recordings, email, and teleconferencing to augment

or replace traditional instructional delivery methods (Kaware & Sain, 2015;

Westera, 2015).

The need for good quality network services is very important in the use of

computer networks. Mostly in schools the factor that most influences the quality of

network services is the Ethernet Cable Router. In computer networks there are 2 (two)

ethernet cables, namely straight-through and cross-over ethernet cable. Straight-through

and Cross-over are more susceptible to interference than cable transmission media.

Research related to the quality of network services on straight-through and Cross-over are

widely carried out.

With the rapid development of information technology, information network has

become the fundamental guarantee of school progress. The network is the basic material

foundation of the information society. It is ubiquitous, and human activities are highly

dependent on it. Education is also inseparable from the Internet. (Muhammad Muzammal,

2022)

This cable networks lesson and activity play an important role in transferring

useful information to the students specially in the era of information and communication

technology (S. Guizani, 2018) It also help the students to minimize electromagnetic

radiation and resist external interference in conducting future activities and field of work.

It also helps to limit interference with other adjacent twisted pairs (cross-talk).

According to Kent and Facer (2019) cable networks lessons and activities

includes computers, the Internet, and electronic delivery systems such as internet, radios,

televisions, and projectors among others, and is widely used in today’s education field

indicated that school is an important environment in which students participate in a wide

range of computer activities, while the home serves as a complementary site for regular

engagement in a narrower set of computer activities. Increasingly, ICT is being applied

successfully in instruction, learning, and assessment.

Cable Networks lessons and activities tends to expand access to education.

Through ICT, learning can occur any time and anywhere. Online course materials, for

example, can be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Teleconferencing

classrooms allow both learner and teacher to interact simultaneously with ease and

convenience. Based on ICT, learning and teaching no longer depend exclusively on

printed materials. Multiple resources are abundant on the Internet, and knowledge can be

acquired through video clips, audio sounds, visual presentation and so on. Current

research has indicated that ICT assists in transforming a teaching environment into a

learner-centered one (Jo Shan Fu, 2022)

Information and communication technology have been used in teaching practices

for some time. In modern times, Cable Network lesson and activities even become a

driving force curriculum in some. Teachers use worksheets for the purposes of supporting

studying, promoting active learning, raising interest in learning different subjects and

assessment. Many studies suggest that well-designed learning activity sheet has positive

impacts on students’ learning achievement (Ormanci, 2020).

To make learning become accessible, Cable Network lessons and activities for the

grade 10 students must perform the behavior personally during teaching. For this

purpose, the stimulants to direct the student to show the behavior must be appropriate

for the student’s qualities and behaviors to be obtained (Akzan, Z., 2016).

The Cable Network lessons and activities are important tools, including the steps

of this process which specify what the grade 10 students should do next, help the

students themselves set up their information in their own minds, and at the same time,

provide the whole class with an opportunity to participate in the given activity. It is said

that, the Cable Network lessons and activities makes the students active in the learning

environment. Showing the way of getting the findings in a controlled way by making

observations, forming hypotheses, and doing experiments around the specific topic

(Cilekler, D. 2015).

Cable Network lessons and activities in Information and Communication

Technology can be useful in many ways in terms of academic achievement. For

example, as supplements to textbooks, Cable Network lessons and activities can be used

to add information for particular classes. In addition, blanks Cable Network lessons and

activities are invitations for students to fill in gaps; they are opportunities for knowledge

construction. Well-designed questions in worksheets can draw students’ interest when

paired with proper teaching methods (Lee, C., 2020).

The Department of Education issued Memorandum DM-CI 2020-000 tiled

Clarification on the use of the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs).

Relative to the implementation of the new normal for the incoming school year 2021-

2022, the memorandum includes the assigned tasks of teachers when they will start to

render service on June 1, 2020. The development of the Learning Activity Sheets (LAS)

will be based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) issued by the

Central Office.

One of the best way to inculcate the younger generation is to adjust and find their

suits, and this is through the integration of positive utilization of Cable Network lessons

and activities in Information and Communications Technology-Computer System

Servicing, which the researcher has a broad knowledge of. Using these Cable Network

lessons and activities as to bid goodbye to the distance learning to born of the

progressive face-to-face classroom set-up.

Junior High Department of Tarlac National High School, welcome the learners

from Grade 7 to Grade 10 in a progressive face-to-face classes. In reality, face-to-face

classes boost academic performance, improve on mental health and well-being, and help

develop social engagement skills. Furthermore, many of our bright yet disadvantaged

students find it difficult to spend on devices and internet access. Being in a classroom

with other students encourages students to engage in live discussions and relevant

debates. This type of learning environment gives students other people to bounce ideas

off and allows them to question others to ensure their understanding of the concept is

correct. Having your ideas challenged helps encourage critical thinking, rather than just

reading theory from a laptop. Face-to-face learning teaches students how to work in a

team environment and prepares them for when they enter the workplace with other staff

members. With classroom learning, students don’t only learn from the theory the

teacher is presenting. They learn from other teachers questions and past experiences.

Given this matter, the researchers are therefore to think, formulate, plan, and

develop a cable network lessons and activities to assist the school in launching and

giving high quality education to all the learners. The researchers are major in

Technology and Livelihood Education that currently teaching with a specialization in

information and communication technology-computer system servicing for grade 10

students of Tarlac National High School-Junior High School Department. The

researchers develop and positively claims that the Project TESTER (To Enhance the

I.C.T. Skills of Grade Ten (10) Students in making Ethernet Cable Router) will help

those students who are struggling to grasp the lesson under ethernet cable network and

also to help those students who experience lack of resources to continue their education.

The researcher’s mantra and aims that no one is left behind in our educational system

and to improve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the Grade 10 learners of

Tarlac National High School-Junior High School Department.

Instrument/s

Teacher-made test (pre-test and post-test) in understanding ICT-Computer System

Servicing for Grade 10 students is constructed and administered to the students and

consists of 30 multiple-choice items. In constructing the test items, the teacher-

researcher considered the protocol for the construction of an informal objective

examination.

The pre-test determined the level of performance of the Grade 10 students

pertaining to Information and Communication Technology-Computer System Servicing

topic Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable Network before the intervention took place. The

post-test is used to determine if the students gain the required knowledge on selected

topics in Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable Network under Information and

Communications Technology-Computer System Servicing.

Data Collection Procedure

With the aid of textbooks, MELC, teachers guide, and learner’s materials, 30-item

examinations (pre-test and post-test) were constructed about selected topics. The test

items were multiple-choice types of tests with four options each.

The teacher-researcher considered the topics to be included through the use of

content validity and Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) released by

Department of Education. Afterwards, a table of specifications was developed. As a

result, it gave the teacher-researcher a clearer picture of how many items should be

included in a specific topic.

Table 4 shows the frequency distribution of scores obtained by the participants in the

pretest examination. Based on the results, 8 out of 35 (29 %) of the participants acquired scores

that means the competency level before the use of podcast is Average. Then, 22 out of 35 (57%)

of them acquired scores under the Below Average level. Finally, 5 out of 35 (17%) of the

participants acquired a poor performance in their pretest.

Furthermore, it is clearly shown in the table that no student acquired scores for the

Outstanding and Above Average level of performance in the pretest. As a result, this is a

manifestation that participants had inadequate knowledge about the lessons covered in

Information and Communication Technology-Computer System Servicing.

After the bearing of pretest, the teacher researcher conduct series of discussions,

activities, and sessions were done using the ALUG ( A Learning Activity Sheet for

Understanding ICT for Grade 10 Learners) to Junior High School Students participants of Tarlac

National High School-Main. After all the competencies involved were discussed with the use of

the Google Classroom, software materials in teaching, a posttest was conducted.

the competency level after the used of project podcast is Outstanding it only shows that the

participants learned from the project podcast. Then, 15 out of 35 (40%) of them acquired score

fall under Above Average Level. And lastly, 2 out of 35 (13%) of the students acquired Average

level in their posttest.

It is clearly manifestation based from the results that the participants indeed increased

their scores compared to the scores acquired from the pretest. This results denotes a worthy

performance from the participants since no one acquired scores in below average and poor

performance.

1. Significant difference in the score of the participants before and after

intervention was applied

To display if the improvement in scores really show a significant difference, and to

emphasize the effectiveness of the use of ALUG ( A Learning Activity Sheet for Understanding

ICT for Grade 10 Learners)with the use of google classroom, t-test was conducted and the results

are as follows:

Pretest 9.04 14.89

Posttest 23.47 13.77

The calculated means from the scores of the participants from the pretest and posttest

were 9.04 and 23.47, respectively. This gives a difference of 14.43 which shows in some way a

great difference in the performance of the students before and after the use of ALUG (A

Learning Activity Sheet for Understanding ICT for Grade 10 Learners). Hereafter, this not only

be the leading basis to display the effectiveness of the use of the podcast in understanding the

lessons in Information and Communications Technology- Computer System Servicing by the

Grade 10 junior High School learners of Tarlac National High School-Main. T-test was

conducted to show the significant difference in the performance of the participants before and

after the use of ALUG (A Learning Activity Sheet for Understanding ICT for Grade 10

Learners).

To assess the results or scores of the participants, the t-value will dictate whether the null

hypothesis (which states n significant difference between the scores of the pretest and posttest of

the students) is to be rejected or accepted at 0.05 level of significance.

Since the computed value of t (20.679) was greater than the critical value (2.004), the null

hypothesis is rejected. This headed to the conclusion that the difference in the performance of the

participants before and after the use of ALUG (A Learning Activity Sheet for Understanding ICT

for Grade 10 Learners) was highly and statistically significant at 0.05 level. Thus, there was

sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis and say that the scores have significantly

different means.

Meanwhile, it has been found that there was a significant difference in the performance

of the participants before and after the use of ALUG (A Learning Activity Sheet for

Understanding ICT for Grade 10 Learners), the aforementioned analysis for the means acquired

from the pretest and posttest scores could further validate that the claim was true. Therefore, the

use of ALUG (A Learning Activity Sheet for Understanding ICT for Grade 10 Learners) is

effective to use to let the Grade 10 Junior High School participants of Tarlac National High

School understand the lesson of Information and Communication Technology Computer System

Servicing in enhancing the skills of the Grade 10 learners

2. Implication of this action research to Tarlac National High School-Main.

From the action research conducted, schools are viewed as a component in honing and

developing the knowledge and skills of the students. Of particular interest are efforts to provide

quality education in this trying times for Tarlac National High School in enhancing their skills in

ICT through different activities in school during school hours. Such activities range from

educational enrichment, career exploration and development, and social and recreational

opportunities. The school should have an active participation in this academic endeavor. The ICT

teachers should be fully equipped with strategies and techniques on how to inculcate and discuss

the Information ad Communication Technology-Computer System Servicing subject in a home-

based learning. The adviser, and teachers should always remind the students about the

importance of ICT, safety, and education itself so that they would know how to avoid

unexpected happenings like misplaced of computers part, the do’s and don’ts in assembling and

disassembling computers and how to value education first at their young age.

With the help of the School Administrator, Principal, Head teachers, Adviser, and subject

teacher, teaching ICT-CSS leads in enhancing their skills and farther develop their knowledge in

using information and commination technology nowadays. This is the reason that

Principal/school head, Head Teachers, Adviser, and subject teachers is like a family that leads in

developing the and enhancing the skills of their students. For one cannot function well without

the aid or help of the other. The school should be the agent on removing the number of illiteracy

cases in school though it is a gradual process that needs more time and effort but with the

collective effort of everyone, wholehearted dedication of every teachers to guide the students in

right path, and a passion to uplift the lives of the student is a big way to achieve the enchantment

of their skills. Any preventive measures cannot be facilitated without the cooperation of the

whole school force. Conducting schools trainings and seminars both for teachers and students in

enhancing their ICT skills is a must and highly commendable. Awareness is also a great help

among students because if the students knows the importance fo ICT in this present times there is

a huge progress will happen in the future because of the advent of modern technolgy. At their

young age, Education should be the priority to move forward and causes in advance to uplift the

lives of the individual. If the students are secured, loved and treated fairly by his family,

teachers, and classmates then learning comes in and good outcome would be the expected results

in enhancing the skills of the students

Reflections

The results of the study revealed that the use of ALUG (A Learning Activity Sheet for

Understanding ICT for Grade 10 Learners) was effective in enhancing the understanding the

lessons in Information and Communication Technology-Computer System Servicing of the

Grade 10 learners of Tarlac National High School-Main. It was a mandate to all specially the

teachers of the Department of Education to conduct research and innovations in this present and

trying times. The interventions in classroom instruction and teaching process should improve for

quality of education to be delivered to our students and other stakeholders despite this pandemic

or trying times. The delivery of quality education, lessons, and achieve maximum level of

learning from the students should be the priority. With these silver lining findings, junior high

school teachers, other stakeholders, and the Administrative of Tarlac National High School-Main

should produce and find other/more ways on how the students will learn the lessons with deep

understanding, comprehension, and mastery. The world is turning into a major technological hub

due to the creativity, aggressiveness and innovativeness of the people’s playful minds. Changes

always occur in our everyday lives because of these technological advances, and they are

continuously developing because people do not stop searching and seeking something new which

would bring them convenience and comfort. One of the best way to deliver quality education

now is the integration of modern technology in teaching. It is definitely practical to use

technology in classroom instruction because the students nowadays are digital native, computer

wizard, and technologically user oriented. Students would feel like a classroom setting because

of this advancement. However, despite of the inclination and demand of the use of technology,

the old ways of teaching or traditional ways of teaching should not be totally removed for it

depends upon the situation which is best discussed with the advent of modern technology or with

just an ordinary talk way of teaching and a plain chalk.
