PART 1: INTRODUCTION
VISUAL ARTS IN YOUR SPACE
“Art can forge powerful connections between people, and—if thoughtfully
constructed—even brief discussions about artwork may make significant
positive impact on provider-patient understanding as well as on patient
mood.”[1]
Adding artwork to your space
is a simple way to make an
impact on your space. The
Center for Performing Arts
Medicine offers employee,
physician, and volunteer
images collected in the last 9
all-employee photography
exhibitions to brighten your
space.

CASE STUDIES FOR VISUAL ARTS
In a study on how patients actually experience and use art in hospitals
they found the inclusion of artwork in patient areas to have “the potential
to positively affect patients’ satisfaction.” They found that art, “influences
patients’ experience of safety, comfort, time and identity” and that “art
affects the degree of satisfaction with hospital treatment.” [2]

HOUSTON METHODIST CLEAR LAKE
Houston Methodist Clear Lake recently renovated their hospital
and incorporated CPAM artwork to enhance their healing
environment. The artwork spans almost every area of the
hospital and they even created a relaxation room for nurses,
using the tranquil imagery to set the tone of the space.

for you to choose from. The available images follow principles of evidenced-based art
research, which is based on scientific analysis of the impact of art in healthcare
environments on patients, staff, and visitors.
The following pages offer suggestions on how to think about the images you select and
