Management Philosophy

According to Indeed, “every manager is unique;” this is a true statement. By

being unique, managers demonstrate the ability to have different approaches on
dealing with multiple issues and can incorporate numerous strategies to ensure
all staff is working to its highest ability. Indeed referenced five “management
philosophy may include or base their philosophy on: Theories, Attitudes,
Principles, Beliefs, and Behaviors.”1 These are all excellent points to use
when discussing successful leadership and useful to establish structure in setting
expectations for employees at work.

I believe my managerial philosophy falls in line with Henry Mitzinberg’s

philosophy. According to Mitzinberg a successful manager has ten independent
roles. These roles include: figurehead, leader, liaison, monitor, disseminator,
spokesperson, and entrepreneur.2 I believe a successful manager is not only
responsible for workflow and the bottom line, but also the morale of his
employees and the ability to address any problem or issue that may arise. A
successful manager wears many hats. Like Mitzinberg, I believe a successful
manager uses his life experiences to solve the challenges faced everyday.
Mitzinberg believes successful managers draw on skills learned throughout their
lives and these skills would be difficult to attain in a classroom setting. In a CNN
interview he stated: “You can teach all sorts of things that improve the
practice of management with people who are managers. What you cannot
do is teach management to somebody who is not a manager … you cannot
teach surgery to somebody who’s not a surgeon.”3

My philosophy of management can be understood by reading my mission

statement. Although it is short, it encompasses everything I believe about
leadership. My mission is “to serve with excellence and encourage all to
strive for excellence.”
