THE IMPERIAL ACADEMY
Long ago, in the year 1070, there were no universities in Viet Nam. So, in 1076,
Emperor Ly Nhan Tong decided to build one - the Imperial Academy. It is considered
the first university in Viet Nam. The university was a great success and thousands of
Vietnamese scholars graduated from this university.

The Imperial Academy has a long and interesting history. Many kings, emperors and
scholars worked to develop the university. Chu Van An was regarded as one of the most
famous teachers at the Imperial Academy.

In modern time, the Imperial Academy continues to grow and receive recognition.
Many old buildings were reconstructed in 1999. In 2003, four statues (Ly Thanh Tong,

stone tablets were recognised by UNESCO.
