Bach CPE Flute Concerto in D Minor
From the time that Frederick II was crowned King of Prussia in 1740 (later called Frederick "The Great"), he
expanded the group of court musicians, including: C. Ph. E. Bach as cembalo player, Joseph Benda as violinist,
Johann Friedrich Agricola as court composer, Karl Heinrich Graun as Kapellmeister, and Johann Joachim
Quantz as chamber musician, flutist, and king’s flute teacher.
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's flute concerto H 484.1 (Wq 22) in D minor was composed in Berlin in 1747 when
the composer was already a court employee. Of the six extant flute concertos, this is perhaps the best known,
and it is quite likely that C. Ph. E. Bach's flute concertos were intended for the king or his teacher to perform.
This edition is based on the anonymous manuscript of the time (from the collection of Princess Anna-Amalie),
now owned by the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kultur besitz, consisting of full score and individual
parts. Original title: Concerto á Flauta Traverso / Violino Primo / Violino Secundo / Viola / et / Basso.
According to this source, the concerto was originally attributed to “Benda” (probably Joseph Benda),
however, by another later hand this name was crossed out and added: “C. F. E. Bach”.
Regarding the dynamics, the work has the typical contrasting treatment of and from the baroque era,
only in a few cases, the composer makes use of , or . As with many of the manuscript copies of S.
with the individual parts, the copyist often does not write clearly if the or 's are on the beat, on the
VIII and later, speed is given more preference than accuracy, for this reason and comparing the general score
second or third beat. In these cases, we tried to correct and interpret the dynamics by comparing with the
parallel passages to achieve the greatest possible clarity and verticality.
In the case of articulations, we added some keile that we considered missing and suggested some slurs
written in dotted lines.

Comments:
Inspecting and comparing different sources in detail, we have found two harmonic problems that look more
like a composer oversight than a copyist error.

b. 180 - Flute part: A parallel 4th (B-flat – A) is produced against the Basso line (F – E), quite unusual for the
harmonic rules of the time:
An option to solve this issue would be to use the same idea given by the composer. This way, the parallel 4th
would be avoided:

We advise that these two mentioned harmonic problems be put in context, which means that they should
depend on the place and the speed chosen for the piece. Each performer will decide if the suggested changes
are necessary.
