RYDE EISTEDDFOD INCORPORATED
A non-profit, volunteer-run organisation presents the Eisteddfod for 2023
July 8 to September 3
organised by
the Ryde Eisteddfod Committee with support from our sponsors, volunteer helpers,
Ryde City Council Events Management & Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club
Ryde Eisteddfod Committee Inc. is a nonprofit, volunteer run organisation devoted to producing an annual
cultural event in Ryde for the benefit of performing arts students, whatever their age or ability, and for the
entertainment of audiences in the area. We rely heavily on volunteer help for the running of the Eisteddfod and on
sponsorships and donations for prizes.
Ryde Eisteddfod has been in operation for over 30 years and has grown from a small event of about 200
competitors to its present size involving more than 5,000 entrants annually. Many of our scholarship winners have
gone on to positions in the Australian opera, overseas ballet companies and international study. The committee is
greatly encouraged by the success of these young people but at the same time aims to improve the confidence and
enjoyment of the other artists who may not choose to make a career in the performing arts. Their skills will enrich
their lives in other ways.
Money raised by the committee is returned to the contestants as prizes after our expenses are met. Costs of
running the event include venue hire, insurance, postage and printing, payment of adjudicators and accompanists
and hire of equipment. Junior sections are awarded trophies and senior sections are awarded cash prizes.

Message from the Chair

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to a great year of fine
music, speech, dance and drama at this year's Ryde Eisteddfod
We continue to get great support from Ryde Council, with whom we have worked
since 1988 to maintain a high quality, entertaining and all inclusive programme..
We are very appreciative of their provision of quality venues in the Ryde area and
their ongoing support of the arts in general. The Committee has successfully
applied for grants from both local and federal governments to enable us to keep
moving forward, streamlining our offerings both to the competitors and to the
wider Ryde community who are treated to an amazing range of talent right on
their doorstep in July, August and September.
As the Eisteddfod gets back into full stride after the limitations of the Covid times,
we are extremely pleased to have some new volunteers, new sponsors and many
new performers. Some of our adjudicators are with us for the first time and I
wish them - and our returning adjudicators - a most enjoyable Eisteddfod season.
I again acknowledge the work of our hard-working Convenors, Committee
members and the volunteers who join us each year to make sure that the event is
run to the highest standard.
The volunteers themselves are able to enjoy seeing exciting emerging talent as well
as meeting up with our regular performers who are an important part of this
annual cultural spectacular. New volunteers are always welcome and we value
any contributions they can make - including new ideas they bring with them.
Sponsorship of an eisteddfod event is more than just providing a bucket of money
(though that helps). It is a very rewarding for our prizewinners to feel the
community support behind their endeavours and achievements. Thankyou to all
of our sponsors - our longtime associates and those newly joining the team.
I look forward to meeting many of our performers, volunteers - and sponsors during
the course of the Eisteddfod.
Best wishes
Edna Wilde OAM (Chairman)

5
EDNA WILDE AWARDS
In 2008 the Ryde City Council unanimously voted that the contribution
of Councillor Edna Wilde OAM to arts and culture in the City of Ryde be recognised
through the sponsorship of an annual award or trophy with a cash prize of $5,000 at the
City of Ryde Eisteddfod. This award, which bears her name, is to be in the discipline of
her choice. In accordance with Edna's wishes this award is spread across all disciplines.

Special Passes
Special Admission Passes are available to key people involved in students' participation in the Ryde
Eisteddfod - ORDER ONLINE – see Online Extras Menu – zero charge for these passes.

A separate Teachers Pass should be ordered (with name supplied) for EACH teacher attending.

Official Vocal Accompanists for 2023

An Official Accompanist is rostered on to each section of the Eisteddfod where indicated in Vocal,
Instrumental and Seniors events.
If you intend using this accompanist, you must contact him/her at least a week before your scheduled
performance - two weeks before for major works. Accompanists are not required to sight-read music on
the day, and need time to prepare the item.
Live accompaniments ONLY are allowed in sections where an official accompanist is provided.
In 2022 backing tracks are being allowed for choral groups who have had difficulty rehearsing with a
live pianist.
Competitors may choose to use their own accompanist, who will be admitted to the session free of
charge.
NOTE: Official accompanists are not normally provided for the Pop/Rock Vocal or Amplified events, as
audio equipment is provided for CD backing on those occasions, but singers may provide their
own accompanists if they wish.

CLASSICAL VOCAL NOTES on Accompaniments
• Copies of songs must be provided for the adjudicator
• No sound system is provided for senior classical solo events Solos may be performed with
live accompaniment (own accompanist or official accompanist) but NOT CD backing.

AUDIO ACCOMPANIMENT FOR JUNIOR SOLOS. For junior classical and folk solo events live

provide audio backing. This needs to be set up before the section starts - please arrive at least 30
minutes before the section starts to arrange this. NO MICROPHONE may be used.
It is also possible to upload a .mp3 file using the Backing Tracks Upload Menu Item from the front
menu. - this will then be played by the MC. (A backup USB copy of the file should be brought on the
performance day in case of problems with file upload/download).

If using the official accompanist, competitors must contact him/her AT LEAST 4-5 days before
the event. The official accompanist may refuse to play if this is not done.
A piano is provided, but other instruments may accompany items if required.

Photographs and Videos -**parents and teachers please note**
you MAY be breaking the law if you photograph or video performers in the Ryde Eisteddfod, you ARE
certainly breaking the rules of the Eisteddfod
§ The recording of any song, play or musical performance which is still under copyright needs a licence from
AMCOS, otherwise this body has the power to impose fines on offenders. Please be aware that even public
domain works (by long dead composers) may still be under copyright if they have been arranged or re-edited
in the past 50-70 years.
§ Child protection and privacy requirements mean that the Eisteddfod has a "Duty of Care" in protecting
children from being photographed by strangers or possible pedophiles. Therefore, written permission must be
obtained from the parents of every child before a photograph can be taken by someone not responsible for that
child (especially in groups).
§ Intellectual property needs to be protected. This applies particularly to dance and drama but could also be
applied to teachers' arrangements of vocal and choral items.
§ Flash from cameras, or even the awareness that a camera is being focussed, can mean that a performer may
feel awkward, or have a memory lapse during the performance. This is very unfair to the performer who is
trying to do his/her best, and may be feeling a little nervous at the time.
§ Parents and teachers may freely photograph their own children or students before or after an event, for
example, during the prize-giving.
§ An official video service (AMCOS licensed) is available at the Dance venue for bona fide parents and teachers
wishing to obtain a record of their own children's performances.
Ryde Eisteddfod will make every effort to acquaint people with these facts - on the website, in the printed programmes and by
means of signs and announcements at the venues, but cannot be held responsible for persons who deliberately flout these
regulations

VOCAL SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Rules and Conditions of Entry - Vocal
NB: most up to date version of the Rules & Information to Contestants is that on the website - see General
Information

Eligibility to enter/perform
1. All sections are open to all amateur competitors.
• An amateur is defined as “not professional”– i.e. not deriving a significant proportion of
his/her total annual income from teaching or performing in that field, or having been so
employed in the previous ten years. It is possible that a person deemed to be professional in
one section of the Eisteddfod may be considered an amateur in another section, e.g. a flute
teacher could not perform in the instrumental sections but could potentially perform in the
Speech section if not also a professional in that field.
• Because of the importance of Eisteddfod competitions in the artistic development of young
performers, students under the age of 17, registered in fulltime academic studies, are
deemed to be amateurs.
2. Only the person named on the Official Entry Form may perform in the event listed in the programme.
• Substitutions “for performance only” may be requested where one member of a duo or
small group is unable to perform due to illness or a reason considered legitimate by the
Section Coordinator, and if agreed to by the adjudicator.
3. Any competitor who has been taught, coached or advised by an adjudicator in the six months prior to
the opening date of the current Eisteddfod shall be ineligible to compete in the section(s) judged by that
adjudicator.
• In the rare case that a scheduled adjudicator is unable to take part (e.g. because of
illness) the Eisteddfod should be notified of potential problems with this rule, so that
they may attempt to resolve the situation for a particular competitor.
4. No competitors may enter the same section more than once in the same role.
• Bona fide members of two different choirs may perform in those competing groups.
18
• No more than 20% of any two groups may be the same people. In the case of Small
Ensembles (3-4 performers) no more than 1 person may be common to 2 groups. In Small
Ensembles (5-8 performers) the maximum number of overlap is 2 performers.

Choice of Item and Provision of Music

5. No competitor may perform the same item in more than one section except where indicated.
6. Competitors in Vocal (except amplified vocals ) sections with “own choice” material must provide a
complete and legible (unmarked) copy of the material for the adjudicator, handing it to the Registration
Desk immediately before the commencement of their section .
• Material submitted in this way will be returned to competitors at the end of the section if
it is an original or an authorised photocopy. APRA requires the Eisteddfod to destroy all
unauthorised copies (paper or digital) at the conclusion of the events.
• Note: Ensembles must provide the complete score. Piano reductions are not acceptable.
7. All competitors using the Official Accompanist must send a second, performance-quality copy of
their music to the accompanist.
• If this is an unauthorised photocopy, it must, by law, be forwarded to AMCOS, and
cannot be retained. Authorised photocopies and original published copies will be returned
to the competitors at the conclusion of the section.

Age / Eligibility Sections

8. Age is determined as at June 30th of the current year. Proof of age may be requested.
9. OPEN sections are for any age but are still restricted to amateurs.
10. Specifications of age restrictions vary across the Eisteddfod categories. It is the responsibility of the
person lodging the entry form to ensure that the competitor is in the correct age group and satisfies the
restrictions applying to a particular event
• GROUP AGE - ‘School Age’ Classification. In all sections with age restrictions
specified as “Secondary School Age ” no competitor may be of an age greater than that
generally considered normal for secondary schooling. A small proportion of the players
may be of younger age than specified. A similar ruling applies to the age restriction
“Primary School Age”.
Restrictions of Availability
11. … (No restricted sections in vocal/choral programme)
12. Special efforts will be made for entrants in multiple sections if a clash occurs within the Ryde
Eisteddfod programming.
• After the programme is printed, there can be no requests for change. Only in exceptional
circumstances will such changes be considered and the request must be in writing (email
or paper)
Performance
13. All competitors must perform in their allotted programme order or they forfeit their right to compete,
except where prior arrangements have been made with the Section Coordinator of the Ryde Eisteddfod.
• Latecomers may be permitted to perform.
14. The adjudicator’s decision is always final.
15. No communication is to be made with the adjudicator at any time prior to or during the section.
• Disqualification may result from an infringement of this rule.
16. Time limits must be observed. Time is calculated from the opening word of a speech item, or the
first note of music.
• Penalties will be applied to those exceeding the time limit. How this is dealt with by
adjudicators will vary, but anyone not abiding by the set time limits risks complete
disqualification.
17. No competitor is allowed to rehearse in the Ryde Eisteddfod’s venues.

19
18. No teacher or parent will be allowed on stage during a performance except in the capacity of
conductor or accompanist.
• A teacher or parent may assist very young children or disabled competitors in getting
themselves ready for a performance and assist at the conclusion of a performance.
19. The use of cameras, video and recording devices is prohibited during any performance at the Ryde
Eisteddfod.
• Breaches of this rule may attract legal penalties for copyright infringement, and result in
disqualification. Persons seeking permission to record performances, please see
"Photographs & Videos" (see page 4)
• Photographs of prize presentations may be permitted at end of sections.
20. No prompting, coaching or assistance of any kind shall be given during a performance except that
offered by the adjudicator.
• Breach of this rule will result in disqualification.
21. Entrants at eisteddfod functions take part at their own risk. The eisteddfod does not accept
responsibility for any accident or personal loss or injury, however caused.

25. ALL ENTRIES ARE RECEIVED ACCORDING TO THE CONDITIONS AND RULES OF THE
RYDE EISTEDDFOD COMMITTEE AS STATED ABOVE AND ARE DEEMED TO HAVE BEEN
MADE WITH THE ENTRANT’S CONSENT AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES.

Information for contestants - Vocal

NB: most up to date version of the Rules & Information to Contestants is that on the website - see
General Information
1. A minimum of five (5) entries (or in the case of group performances, three (3) competitor
groups) is normally required for a section to take place.
o If the Section Manager decides to hold an event in which fewer than three
competitors are officially entered, then that section will normally be held FOR
ADJUDICATION ONLY. Where exceptional standard of performance results,
awarding of a prize may be recommended by the adjudicator.
o Combined Sections may be held where individual unviable sections will be
adjudicated together, the age, time of performance and style of music and
conditions of performance being maintained for each of the component sections.
o If an entrant is likely to be unable to perform at a particular time they should make
use of the “Timing Request” facility of Online Booking. It may not be possible
for timetabling to meet their requirements but knowledge of the requirement
should reduce the likelihood of the entrant being unable to attend.
2. The task of choosing the right material for each section rests solely with the competitor.
All competitors are reminded that suitability and the degree of difficulty of the item will
be taken into consideration by the adjudicator.
o Please do not choose vocal music with offensive lyrics either for performance or
for backing CDs
3. The Ryde Eisteddfod Committee reserves the right to appoint a substitute adjudicator for
an announced adjudicator.
4. An official accompanist will be provided in those sections so indicated. If his/her
services are required, please contact him/her prior to the event, otherwise he/she may
refuse to sightread the accompaniment.
o Competitors may choose to have their own accompanists.
5. The Ryde Eisteddfod Committee and/or adjudicator reserve the right to reduce or
withdraw a published cash prize or trophy
o (a) if a satisfactory standard of performance has not been reached or
o (b) if a section has attracted an insufficient number of entries, or
o (c) if nonattendance has made the section unviable on the day of the competition.
6. The Ryde Eisteddfod Committee reserves the right to amend the Official Programme.
This includes dividing or merging any section for easier programming purposes, altering
20
the time of performance for individual competitors if requested for legitimate reasons,
and cancelling sections where an insufficient number of competitors has registered
o Competitors are advised to consider their appearance, which is part of the overall
presentation and performance before a paying audience. School uniform or similar
smart and neat attire is suitable.
o Finalists in the Aria and Lieder Vocal sections are requested to wear
appropriate evening dress.
7. Adjudicators’ reports will be made available to each competitor, free of charge, at the end
of each section.
8. Courtesy is expected of the audience during any Eisteddfod performance. Audience
members may be asked to leave the auditorium if they disturb a performance.
9. The Eisteddfod is a non-profit organisation, and the committee and other workers are all
volunteers.
o Please show them consideration for their time and effort.
o Requests, complaints, and helpful suggestions are always welcome, though
preferably in writing, so they can be dealt with in full committee meetings.
10. DISABLED COMPETITORS ARE WELCOME. PLEASE ADVISE SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS ON ENTRY FORM. With Online Entry add this information to the
"Comments" at the bottom of the entry form before final submission. If you forget to do
so, send a follow-up email to the Online Administrator, who can add the information to
your entry.

Vocal and Choral Adjudicators for 2023
Ben Oxley - CLASSICAL VOCAL & Amplified Vocal
teacher, tenor and conductor
With over 20 years of teaching experience, I have helped many students achieve vocal freedom. My
own teachers include Eduardo Asquez, Andrew Field and Vernon Mackie, a pupil of Edgar Herbert-
Caesari, the author of many books on singing. My students have achieved numerous exam, scholarship
and competition successes, including recording contracts, entry into Sydney Conservatorium of Music,
professional work with Opera Australia, musical theatre and film credits.

I taught at The Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, and also had a private studio in London.
After overseeing The Australian Singing Competition, I wrote the ebook Sing To
Win https://www.amazon.com.au/Sing-WIN-How-Singing-Competitions-ebook/dp/B00JDAR6CI
that outlines all the aspects of winning a singing competition. Repertoire choice, preparation and the
winning mindset are what separates a singer for success.

Previously I have adjudicated for the Wollongong and Northern Beaches Eisteddfodau. In 2023 I am
adjudicating the Northern Beaches Contemporary Sections.

Elizabeth Vierboom - CHORAL

Elizabeth Vierboom studied music at the NSW Conservatorium and the University of Sydney.
Majoring in violin and pipe organ, she played and toured with the Australian Youth Orchestra
and the Sydney Youth Orchestra before teaching high school and primary music and
developing a strong interest in choral music.
Elizabeth has conducted and worked with singers and teachers in schools and communities
around NSW, the St Mary’s Cathedral Girl Choristers, guest conducted mass choirs at music
festivals and worked with the Sydney Children’s Choir, ‘Gondwana Voices’ and the
‘Gondwana Indigenous Children’s Choir’ in Sydney and around Australia and the Torres
Straits since 2004.
As an educator, she has worked with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Tuned-Up
program supporting music in schools around NSW and presented at several conferences and
seminars including this year’s National Choral School. She has also taught and worked with
choirs at leading private schools in Sydney and has been the Director of the Choral and Vocal
Program at the Conservatorium High School.
Elizabeth is currently working with choristers (including indigenous choirs) around Sydney
as an Associate Conductor with ‘Gondwana’ Choirs and mentoring Syrian refugee musicians
as they work together with young refugee children making music and joy in Western Sydney.
Olivia Oxley - Amplified Vocal
Olivia Oxley - POP VOCAL
Coming from a family of singers, Olivia’s passion for music has grown exponentially and led to a broader
love of the arts and performing.
In her childhood, she enjoyed performing in a multitude of capacities, which all led to solo performance

Vocal Venues
a)Cox’s Road b) Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club

201 Cox’s Road – The North Ryde Community Centre – is the location for almost all of the solo and
duo events in vocal sections.
It is situated above the library, in the centre of the small shopping area.
On Cox’s Road, across a pedestrian crossing directly in front of the Community Centre there is 2-
hour cark park and the nearby shops have underground parking (only a problem if events go into the
late evening).
Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club - close to West Ryde Station – is the location for our choral sections.
There is street parking, some parking in the club itself and a small station carpark just opposite the
Club.
