its objective, its emotions, and the progress it has made for the U.S as a whole today.
For starters, “The North was fighting for reunification and the South for independence”
says www.nps.gov in their article “The Changing War”. This is representative of how
beliefs change over time. Democrats in 2022 believe in uniting the nation with social
programs and racial equity, while Republicans are more economy-focused. During the
Civil War period, things were much different. The republicans were instead the
advocates for civil rights while trying to improve the economy on the side. The
Democrats, at that time, were much more divided; “Northern Democrats divided into two
factions: the War Democrats, who supported the military policies of President Lincoln;
and the Copperheads, who strongly opposed them. In the South party, politics ended in
the Confederacy.” writes a historian for Wikipedia. The second reason the Civil War is
so relevant today is the emotional conflict. During the war, northern and southern
“sympathizers” arose. These are people who felt for the opposing side. Many of them
were known for taking the opposite stance as the state they lived in. One infamous
southern sympathizer was John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President
Lincoln just five days after the surrendering of General E. Lee evoked an emotional
outburst. In some depictions of the shooting Booth is even leaping out of Lincoln's
balcony to attack the rest of the attendees. The last reason the war is so present in our
current society is what people take from it. Many people believe that the Civil War was
necessary. According to Betsy Towner, a writer for AARP, Those “heroic years shaped
us as one nation”. She goes on to say that we have improved hospitals and technology
because of the war and that it just seemed needed to finally resolve the question of
ethics and law. Others would beg to argue. A large portion of the population seems to
believe that another Civil War is looming revolving around abortions and civil rights.
There is still a lot of discussion about ethics and racism and human rights in general,
and the conversation will continue to upset some and intrigue others, all of it relating to
