Battery
WARNING
When working on the batteries wear proper protection and observe safety precautions
→ Chapter
– Only top up with distilled water if the electrolyte level has dropped below the “MIN” marking.
Note
If the battery electrolyte level exceeds the “MAX” marking the electrolyte will leak from the battery
t during operation (it is necessary to skim off electrolyte). An electrolyte level that is too low (below the
“MIN” marking shortens the battery life considerably. Top up with distilled water).
The battery plugs must always be inserted when charging the battery, measuring the voltage and
t
conducting a test under load.
t Always insert the plugs with “O”-rings after completing the test of the electrolyte density.
7
Measuring voltage under load
Note
Before disconnecting the battery determine the code of radio sets fitted with anti-theft coding.
– First of all disconnect the battery earth strap.
Battery capacity Cold test current Load current Minimum voltage (limit value)
[Ah] [A] [A] [V]
36 175 100 10,0
40 ... 49 220 200 9,2
50 ... 60 265 ... 280 200 9,4
61 ... 80 300 ... 380 300 9,0
81 ... 110 380 ... 500 300 9,5
– If the voltage measured is below the minimum voltage, replace the battery.
Explanations regarding battery load test:
The battery voltage drops during this test as a result of the high load on the battery (a high current flows).
If the battery is O.K., the voltage value drops only as far as the minimum voltage.
If the battery is faulty or only has a weak charge, the battery voltage will drop very rapidly below the
specified minimum voltage.
After completion of the test, the low voltage value is retained for a lengthy period, the voltage rises only
slowly again.
If the voltage measured under a load lasting for 5 to 10 sec. is below the minimum voltage, then the battery
is discharged or defective. The electrolyte density must be tested.

Work sequence when disconnecting and connecting the battery
Disconnect battery
Note
Before disconnecting the battery determine the code of radio set fitted with anti-theft coding
→ Operating instructions of the radio.
– Switch off all electrical components and take out the ignition key.
Slacken the nut (6 Nm) of the fixing screw for the pole terminal and only disconnect the
–
battery earth strap.
Note
If both pole terminals are disconnected, only then disconnect pole terminal (-) from battery
earth.
WARNING
Please observe the following additional instructions after working on the airbag system or on
the belt tighteners or the safety belts:
Note
The battery terminals must only be fitted by hand without using any force in order to avoid
t
damaging the battery housing.
Install the pole terminals in such a way that the battery pole with the terminal is on the
t
same level or protrudes.
If both pole terminals are disconnected, only then disconnect the positive terminal of the
t
battery (+).
t Set clock
9
Check the window lifter/comfort electrics
t
→ Octavia.
WARNING
When working on the battery - risk of accident. Observe the warning instructions and safety
precautions → Chapter.
Visual inspection
A visual inspection of the outer state of the battery, the cleanliness and of the fixed
connections of the pole terminals must be carried out before comprehensive measurements.
WARNING
When working on the battery - risk of accident. Observe the warning instructions and safety
t
precautions → Chapter.
Incorrect attachment of the battery can lead to damage. Carry out attachment inspection
t
→ Chapter.
If the battery housing is not damaged. In the event of damage to the battery housing e.g.
the excess acid can lead to severe vehicle damage. In the event of excess acid the
t
contamined vehicle parts must be immediately treated with neutralizing agent or with a
soapy solution. Paint damage must be repaired by a specialist.
t If the battery terminals (connections of the battery cable) are not damaged and if the fixed
connection of the terminals is not destroyed in the event of damage to the battery
10
terminals.
When connecting the battery pole terminals, pay attention to the specified procedure in this
repair manual when disconnecting and reconnecting the batteries, → Chapter. If the battery
t terminals are not correctly connected and tightened, the cable can ignite. This can result in
extensive function problems of the electrical system. A safe vehicle operation is no longer
guaranteed.
Note
The battery must not be drained by any electrical equipment for at least 2 hours before the
t
measurement is taken.
If the battery was charged, perform measurement only 2 hours after the performed
t
charging.
Follow the procedure described below for measuring the battery voltage in the no-load state:
If the handheld multimeter indicates 12.5 V or more, the battery voltage is O.K.
After charging wait at least 2 hours during which the battery with electrical components must
not be subjected to any load or charge:
Charging batteries
WARNING
The battery plugs must always be securely tightened when charging the battery, measuring
the voltage and conducting a test under load to ensure they are really sealed.
Do not smoke or use a naked light in rooms in which batteries are being charged. The reason
for this is that the gases, which are generated in the batteries, can produce a dangerous
11
explosive gas mixture when charging.
Note
Carefully read through the operating instructions and observe during the charging before
t
using the battery charger.
If a severely discharged battery is quick-charged, it will not accept any charge current or will
t be indicated as properly charged too soon as a result of so-called “surface charging”. Such
batteries then appear to be O.K.
Charging a battery
– Connect the positive cable of the battery charger to the positive terminal of the battery.
– Connect the negative cable of the battery charger to the negative terminal of the battery.
Batteries which have not been operational for a long time, such as in stock vehicles,
discharge themselves.
A battery is severely discharged if the no-load voltage has dropped below 11.6 V. Measure no-
load voltage → Chapter
Note
The battery acid in severely discharged batteries can already freeze at low frost-point
t
temperature.
Severely discharged batteries sulfate, i.e. the entire surfaces of the plates harden. The
battery acid is not clear but has a white opacity.
If a severely discharged battery is re-charged immediately after losing its charge, the
sulphate deposit forms again.
If such batteries are not re-charged in due time, the plates continue to harden and this
12
considerably restricts their ability to accept a charge. This results in a loss of battery capacity.
WARNING
Observe the battery handling instructions as well as the warning instructions and safety
precautions for lead acid batteries → Chapter

Checking the battery using the magic eye
The magic eye gives information about the charge state and the electrolyte level of the
battery via a colour indicator.
Note
The magic eye is located in one battery cell. Therefore, the reading is only relevant for this
t cell. An exact assessment of the state of the battery is only possible by means of a battery
load test → Chapter.
When recharging the battery (via a charger or during operation), gas bubbles can form
under the magic eye, which can distort the indicator regarding the battery state. For this
t
reason before an inspection of the battery, tap lightly and carefully on the magic eye. The
gas bubbles rise in this way and the colour indicator becomes more accurate.
t Colourless or yellow - Electrolyte level too low. The battery must be replaced → Chapter.

General Instructions:
This description is not valid for 1.4 Itr/44 kW engines and 1.6 ltr./55 kW engines. The
procedure is valid for these engines → Chapter.
Rev counter, speedometer, coolant thermometer, fuel gauge sender, digital clock, LCD
display for the odometer, warning lights, 2nd and 3rd generation immobiliser with variable
code.
Compared to the version Classic, the onboard computer MFD (instead of digital clock display)
is installed.
Version with small dot display for data BUS engines (equipment: automatic gearbox or L&K)
Compared to the version Ambiente, the following functions still exist: small dot display, for
the function display of the onboard computer and the gears for the automatic gearbox.
Version with large dot display for data BUS engines (equipment: navigation)
Compared to the version Ambiente, the following functions still exist: large dot display, for the
display of the navigation pictograms, radio data, onboard computer and the gears for the
automatic gearbox.
The following functions are indicated in the multi-function display (onboard computer MFD):
t Digital clock
t Average consumption
t Momentary consumption
t Outside temperature
t Driving
The basic version (LX) is fitted only with a digital clock in the rev counter.
A display is provided in the speedometer for the odometer, trip counter and service interval
display (SID).
The dash panel insert is controlled by a microprocessor and features a comprehensive self-
diagnosis. If faults occur in the system components, fault codes are stored in the fault
memory of the dash panel insert. These faults can be detected using the diagnostic unit
-V.A.G 1552-, -V.A.G 1551 - or -V.A.S 5051-.
Note
56
The following description only relates to the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- using the
program card 5.0. The use of the fault read-out scan tool - V.A.G 1551- with the program card
8.0 or -V.A.S 5051- is similar except for specific deviations (e.g. different readouts in display,
possibility of using a printer etc.).
Note
If a replacement dash panel insert is fitted, the odometer reading and the service interval
t display must be adapted using the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-, or the fault read-out
scan tool -V.A.S 5051- → Chapter.
After replacing the dash panel insert, the respective adaptation values must be entered

All static and sporadic faults are stored in the fault memory: a fault is detected as static if it
t exists for at least 2 seconds. If the fault is then no longer present, it is stored as a sporadic
(temporary) fault. “/SP” appears on the right of the display.
After switching on the ignition, all the faults which exist are set to sporadic and are not

Two types of telephone systems are available. Either as a complete telephone system or as a
telephone pre-installation.
On vehicles fitted with telephone pre-installation there is the possibility later to retrofit mobile
phones (portables). Mobile phones always require their own operating electronics, a so-called
interface box, for operation in ŠKODA vehicles. This creates the link between the mobile
phone and the components installed in the vehicle by means of a standardised VDA plug
connection. The standard telephone from ŠKODA is connected to this VDA plug connection via
a special interface box. Whatever type of interface box can be used for the telephones of
other manufacturers, determine from the particular telephone manufacturer. Interface boxes
without a VDA connector require an appropriate adapter (available e.g. from the company
Votex).

General description
The Navigation System (also known as the Radio-Navigation System = RNS) combines the functions of a
navigation system with those of a high-performance RDS car radio.
The double DIN housing of the system contains
t an RDS radio
t a 5'' colour liquid crystal display
t a navigation system with GPS satellite receiver
t a CD-ROM drive for the navigation system
The aerial for the radio, telephone and navigation mode is linked to the navigation system by a plug
connection.
The radio functions can be enlarged by means of the connection facilities for a 6-CD changer.
A TV input on the rear of the housing makes it possible to use TV and video functions.
Fault finding
The Radio-Navigation System is equipped with self-diagnosis.
For fault finding, initiate self-diagnosis and interrogate the information stored with the vehicle system tester
- V.A.G 1552-.
Radio unit and navigation unit have different address words for the self-diagnosis.
The procedure for conducting self-diagnosis of the radio unit is identical to the self-diagnosis
of the radio system “Gamma (MS501)” → Chapter.
Note
The diagnostic connection is located in the storage compartment on the driver's side.

and of course,
t if the battery (terminal 30) is disconnected (to carry out work on the vehicle).
Locking of the system by the electronic anti-theft lock is indicated by the “SAFE” text in the
display when the unit is switched on.
It is only possible to re-start the system by entering the correct code number for the
electronic anti-theft lock.
Note
The code number is stuck on together with the unit number on the radio card → Operating
t
instructions.
t The radio card should not be kept in the vehicle for safety reasons. Determine the code
157
number from the customer, if it is not known.
Each unit has its own code number. If the radio navigation system is replaced the code
t number of the new unit must also be used. The new code number must be advised to the
customer.
The readout “SAFE” appears in the display. In addition the text “Please enter a numerical
code” and the numerical series “0000” appear.
Enter the code number stuck on the radio card by marking the digits on the selection field
–
for letters and numbers in sequence and confirming.
Note
Entering the first digit causes the string of numbers “0000” to be overwritten.
If the code number has been correctly entered, the LED located at the top right of the unit
must flash when the ignition key is withdrawn. If the LED flashes, the Radio-Navigation
System is operational and the electronic anti-theft lock is activated.
If an incorrect code number has inadvertently been entered for cancelling the lock, “SAFE”
appears in the display, first of all as a flashing readout and then as a constant readout. It is
only possible to repeat the procedure for cancelling the electronic anti-theft lock twice.
If an incorrect code number is entered once again, the unit is blocked for about 1 hour.
It is only possible to carry out a further attempt to cancel the electronic anti-theft lock after
this blocking period has elapsed.
During the blocking period the unit must remain switched on and the ignition key must be left
in the ignition lock.
After the blocking period has elapsed, the number of attempts in the display disappears and
the electronic anti-theft lock can be cancelled again as described above.

Self-diagnosis of the parking aid
General Instructions
The parking aid system measures the distance from the rear of the vehicle to an obstacle
when reversing according to the Echolot principle.
Four ultrasound sensors are installed in the rear bumper for this.
The actuation of the sensors is performed in the combined send-receive mode or only in the
receive mode.
If a trailer is hitched up to the vehicle and the trailer socket is plugged in, the parking aid
sensors are switched off.
Operation:
After the ignition is switched on, a selftest is carried out for about one second.
The parking aid control unit is now permanently in operation, but the distance measurement
system is not activated until the reverse gear is engaged.
As soon as the parking aid is ready, a short signal sounds. (Delay of one second in the case of
vehicles fitted with automatic gearbox.)
If the parking aid control unit detects a fault in the system, a continuous signal sounds for 3
seconds.
Note
If a fault was detected in the park aid system, it is displayed on the vehicle system tester -V.A.
G 1552- after a time delay of two minutes.
The distance warning begins when reversing once the distance to an obstacle is about 1.50
m. The warning consists of sound pulses with a duration of about 75 ms.
The intervals between the sound pulses become proportionally shorter as the distance to the
obstacle decreases. The sound pulses change into a continuous signal at a distance of less
than 25 m (adaptation of the volume with -V.A. G 1552- → Chapter).

General Instructions:
Operation
The electronic immobiliser control unit is integrated in the dash panel insert, this means that
the dash panel insert must be replaced if the control unit is defective.
The immobiliser intervenes in the engine control via an adapted engine control unit.
The immobiliser reader coil reads out the response code of the transponder each time after
switching the ignition on.
The warning light briefly lights up when using an authorised vehicle key.
If an unauthorised vehicle key is used or in the event of a system fault, the warning light
flashes continuously with the ignition "On".
Note
The following description only relates to the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552-. The use of the
fault read-out scan tool -V.A.G 1551- is similar except for specific deviations (e.g. different
readouts in display, possibility of using a printer etc.).
The engine only starts when using an authorised vehicle key, this means a vehicle key
adapted to an immobiliser control unit.
When adapting the vehicle keys → Chapter all of the vehicle keys, as well as the spare keys,
must be adapted to the immobiliser control unit.
If new or additional vehicle keys are required, carry out the adaptation of the vehicle keys.
If for certain reasons, it is not possible to adapt all of the vehicle keys, e.g. keys are lost
during a journey, the customer must be informed that an adaptation of all the vehicle keys
251
must subsequently be carried out.
Initiating self-diagnosis

Procedure when changing the lock set or the immobiliser control unit
Note
In order to ensure an identification of the immobiliser at a later stage, the following steps must absolutely be
carried out when changing the lock set and the control unit.
268
1. 2-part sticker of the lock set
Note
The stickers on the key fob of the new key set
serve to identify the mechanical locking.
Separate the right sticker -2- (with bar code),
– remove it from the key fob of the new lock set
and destroy it.
Remove the remaining left sticker -1- (without
– bar code) from the new key fob and affix it to
the key fob of the customer instead of the
previous old sticker.
269
Thus, the identification on the key fob of the
customer was updated:
t left sticker - mechanical locking
right sticker -3- (new) - immobiliser control
