Lab investigation proposal

Notice:
1. If you plan to go to school during school days
a. pick Experiment i-iv, you do not need to prepare materials and equipment.
b. Pick Experiment v, you may need to buy materials yourself.
c. Propose your own idea(Experiment vi) – check with teacher to get approval
first.
2. If you will stay at home and watch the recorded lesson, requirement for experiment:
a. Safe, or with parents/adults supervise
b. Materials and equipment available – already have/buy from shop
c. Data, may not be in gram/liter etc… 1 cup/2 spoons etc…

Challenge:
 Really design an experiment yourself, including the materials and procedure.

Task:

1. Highlight ONE idea you would like to investigate from the one below or, you can
propose your own idea. Write your own idea in the space provided.
i. Measure the amount of gas produced as baking soda reacts with
vinegar(white one), as amount of baking soda/vinegar change
ii. Measure the amount of sugar/salt dissolved in water at different
temperature(Solubility).
iii. Testing the solubility of different solids (salt, sugar, baking soda) in the
same temperature water.
iv. Chromatography: Separate ink into its component using different solvents

v. Which pop drink produce most gases when Mentos(曼妥思糖) is

added(coca cola,7-up,spirit)? -- you may need to buy the drinks and candy
yourself.
vi. My own idea:

2. Transform the idea you’ve picked into a scientific question. Your scientific question
should include your independent and dependent variable):

My scientific question is: how will the type of pop drink affect the volume of the pop
drink left in the container?
3. Identify variables the variables in the question you want to investigate:
 Independent variable (the one variable you should change)

The type of pop drinks (soda)

 Dependent variable (the ONE variable you should measure)

Volume of the drinks left in the container.

 Possible constant variable (the variables you should keep the same). Give at
least one example.

Volume of each pop drink, number of mentos put into each drink, and same
measuring tool used for measuring the volume.

4. Materials & equipment needed

Note: include the equipment for measurement etc.…

Materials & equipment Quantity (with unit)
Measuring cylinder 1  500 mL
Sprite 500 mL 1bottle
Fanta 500 mL 1bottle
Coca cola 500 mL 1bottle
Mentos 9 Mentos in total
