Caution ・The pressure that can be applied to the rubber tube depends on its
diameter and type. Check of the pressure range appropriate for
the tube and then use it within that range of pressures.
・Note that pressurization increases the diameter of the tube during
measurement.
・Once the pressure exceeding the values mentioned below is loaded,
the rubber is feared to burst.
・This explosion also might damage the pressure sensor itself
because of very strong dynamic impact of water with soil/rock
particles.
・The damage of pressure sensor by the puncture of packer tube
voids the one-year warranty of the product.

11.1 Foundation Behavior During Measurement

If you were to plot the typical sampling results, it is possible to create a sampling results pattern
diagram such as the one below. This section will talk in general about the behavior of the foundation
during sampling, while referring to the sampling results pattern diagram.
Elastmeter 2 sampling is started with the probe inserted into a pre-drilled borehole. In this state, the
walls of the borehole are being squeezed by active earth pressure, making the diameter of the borehole
smaller than it would ordinarily be. The probe is set in the center of this hole with a certain amount of
clearance.
As the load is applied, the expansion of the rubber tube and the behavior of the foundation will
follow the process below.
Sampling Results Pattern Diagram
1) The free expansion of the rubber tube
means that it does not touch the walls of the
borehole and it does not convery pressure to

the foundation. Py ⑥

2) The rubber tube touches the walls of the

borehole.

Stress

3) The walls’ tendency to press back against P

the active earth pressure results in a gradual ⑤

increase in the subgrade reaction while the

rate of displacement decreases.
Po ④

4) Upon reaching the borehole walls, because ΔR

equilibrium with earth pressure at rest (Po)
Displacement
変 位 R R
is maintained, the pressure at this point can
be considered earth pressure at rest. In this
state, the subgrade reaction describes a sharp point of inflection and the displacement speed is at
the minimum.

5) This is the initial linear stage of the load process that creates passive earth pressure -- a sort of
pseudo elastic displacement zone. The pressure - displacement curve is almost a straight line,
with the displacement speed remaining almost constant.

MC-0644/1 74
6) The foundation’s yield point and pressure-displacement curve leave the linear area as the
displacement speed increases and the curve begins to turn upward.

7) The flow and displacement of the foundation continues to progress until it is destroyed.

11.2 Calculating The K Value (Foundation Coefficient)

The K value is defined as the slope of the displacement process on the pressure-displacement curve
of the Sampling Results Pattern Diagram.

ΔP
K= Unit: MPa
ΔR

In other words, the K value is the load strength against the unit displacement amount.

11.3 Calculating The E Value (Elasticity Coefficient)

The E value is the so-called foundation elasticity coefficient. Obtaining this from Elastmeter 2
sampling results presents some very complicated problems, such as whether to use 2 or 3 dimensions
depending on the stress distribution state or the deformation conditions. Therefore, it is most realistic
to accept a certain approximate supposition when performing the calculation.

11.4 A Solution Based on the Surface Deformation Supposition

The behavior of the foundation during sampling can be treated as a two-dimensional displacement
problem on a horizontal plane. If one assumes the pressure is within the elastic area and that the radial
surface is filled with surface deformation, then the elasticity coefficient can be expressed by the
following formula:

E = (1+ν) × r × K

ν is Poisson’s ratio, K is the K value we arrived at above, and r is the intermediate radius of the K
value calculation area. The Poisson ratio ν is approximately 0.3 to 0.5 for soft ground. For rock it
may be 0.3 to 0.4, but in generally we assume that ν= 0.3.
