TATA FIL INTRODUCING AUSTRALIA: Supplementary Chinese Readings for Intermediate Students Linnei Li Gloria Davies Xueru Zhao ROKER FT KAPREFACE This book was developed from the actual classroom needs of Australians studying the Chinese language and is designed to fill a void in Chinese language texts for Australian students. Australians with an intermediate level of competence in Chi- nese, that is those with two to three years of training, often find that the vocabulary learned from existing texts does not enable them to speak about Australia and Australian issues. The Chinese Program at Victoria College (now part of the greater Deakin University) met this need by designing its own suppplementary reading materials, Chinese texts on Australian subject matters such as its history and geography, its peopleand life-styles, and topics of mutual concern to Australia and China. it is a challenging task to design short texts which use a limited vocabulary to cover a wide range of topics. The Chinese Program at Deakin is noted for its practical orientation. Our graduates are able to discuss a wide range of Australian concerns in Chinese in spite of the relatively short time they have devoted to learning the language. Bearing in mind that language is a communicative tool, the Chinese Pro- gram tries to ensure that our graduates are Australian-literate in an Asian language.
